Home for the holidays: A Neighbor Island pilot’s Thanksgiving reflections

Summary

Growing up island hopping and now flying Boeing 717s, Captain Wailani celebrates how aloha and ʻohana take flight across Hawaiian Airlines’ Neighbor Island network during the festive season.

During the Thanksgiving travel period, Hawaiian Airlines will operate over 140 Neighbor Island flights daily, from before sunrise to well after sunset, to ensure our guests reach their Hawaiʻi holiday destination with ease.

The company of friends and family is what makes the festive season warm and bright. For Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 717 Captain Wailani W., helping people reunite across the Neighbor Islands during the holidays is more than just part of the job — it’s a way to honor the spirit of community and togetherness that defines life in Hawai‘i.

Born and raised on Oʻahu, Wailani has proudly piloted Hawaiian’s Neighbor Island routes since 2022 — a decision that has kept him close to the people and places he loves most.

“Sometimes when I’m flying, I think about being a kid and taking the DC-9 to visit family on the other islands. Now, as a 717 pilot, I take a lot of pride in helping kamaʻāina (residents) and local families make similar travel memories — especially during the holidays.”

During the Thanksgiving travel period, we’ll operate over 140 Neighbor Island flights daily, as early as 5:30 a.m. and as late as 9:30 p.m., to ensure our guests reach their Hawaiʻi holiday destination with ease.

While our local network helps bridge the Neighbor Islands and Hawaiʻi’s remote communities year-round, that connectivity carries even deeper meaning during the holidays.

“On the 717, we take a lot of pride in serving guests from all over by providing them with a safe and comfortable Neighbor Island travel experience so they can be with loved ones for life’s most important shared moments,” Wailani explained.

“There’s definitely a stronger sense of togetherness onboard this time of year, and it reminds me how special and unique our Island home is,” Wailani added. For him, every Neighbor Island trip is more than just another flight — it’s an opportunity to welcome every guest with aloha and keep Hawaiʻi connected.

“We’re all ʻohana at Hawaiian Airlines, and weʻll welcome every passenger this Thanksgiving as a part of that ʻohana.”

Wailani’s Hawaiʻi holiday travel tips

Plan for spotty weather and stay flexible

This time of year is ānuenue (rainbow) season, with frequent passing showers and crisp mornings. Higher elevations can also bring cooler temperatures. Pack appropriately and embrace Hawaiʻiʻs unique winter charm.

Give yourself extra time

Holiday travel means busier airports. Give yourself some extra time by checking in and paying for any bags on our mobile app and website before arriving at the airport.

Kamaʻāina, don’t forget about your Huakaʻi by Hawaiian perks

Huakaʻi by Hawaiian members enjoy a free checked bag – inclusive of surfboards, golf bags and other sports equipment – on Neighbor Island flights, as well as exclusive travel deals.

Show aloha always

Be kind and courteous to our employees – from gate agents to flight attendants – and, most importantly, to one another.

Statement on Olympic Pipeline impacts

Nov. 25, 2025 – 10:30 a.m. PT

With the expected resumption of service from the Olympic Pipeline serving SeattleTacoma International Airport, we are returning to normal operations. We have discontinued all planned fuel stops but will continue to tanker and truck in additional fuel on a reduced basis as the pipeline increases to normal capacity. No other operational impacts are expected. Thank you to our guests for their understanding as we worked to minimize the impacts from the fuel leak.

Nov. 24, 2025 – 12:30 p.m. PT

We continue to minimize the impacts of the Olympic Pipeline fuel leak. We do not expect disruption to our operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport through the Thanksgiving travel week.

To ensure our scheduled service is maintained,  we have implemented strategies to manage our fuel:

  1. Tankering fuel on inbound flights to Seattle – including the ability to roundtrip fuel from the departure city, reducing the amount of fuel needed from SEA;
  2. Maintaining and expanding trucking operations to bring in additional fuel supply;
  3. Adding a fuel stop to roughly a dozen flights per day. A fuel stop allows a flight to depart Seattle with limited fuel, land at an airport along the flight’s route to on board additional fuel and then continue onto the destination airport – without passengers deplaning. The dozen flights selected for a fuel stop change daily but are focused on transcontinental routes (such as SEA-JFK) and flights to the Hawaiian Islands. Similarly, the fuel stop locations change daily. We sincerely apologize to the guests whose flights are impacted.

We have not canceled any flights due to fuel supply issues because of our ability to manage fuel using these strategies. We remain in close communication with Olympic Pipeline, refineries and our airport partners, and will communicate if we begin to see operational impacts.

From summit to solutions: Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines partners with MT2030 to empower mountain communities

Summary

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are investing in the future of the communities we serve by partnering with Mountain Towns 2030 (MT2030).

Earlier this year, we became a major sponsor of the annual MT2030 Climate Summit to launch the MT2030 Elevate Scholarship, a program designed to remove financial barriers for community leaders eager to participate in the three-day event.

In the heart of America’s mountain towns — where alpine trails meet bluebird skies — communities are facing the growing challenges of climate change. These towns, often nestled in remote, high-altitude regions, are particularly vulnerable to environmental shifts and have become increasingly susceptible to droughts, wildfires, avalanches and ecological degradation.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are investing in the future of the communities we serve by partnering with Mountain Towns 2030 (MT2030), a nonprofit that empowers a movement of mountain communities committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Earlier this year, we became a major sponsor of the annual MT2030 Climate Summit to launch the MT2030 Elevate Scholarship, a program designed to remove financial barriers for community leaders eager to participate in the three-day event. Four scholarship recipients from California and Washington were selected to attend the October gathering, hosted in Breckenridge, Colo., and flown on Alaska Airlines. The group joined hundreds of industry professionals and stakeholders in conversations around complex climate challenges and solutions.

We hosted more than 600 attendees from 61 mountain communities and 37 ski resorts, with 118 speakers leading 49 sessions across a wide range of climate and sustainability topics. Our 2025 Summit was an overwhelming success, and we couldn’t have done it without Alaska Airlines’ partnership.”

Mountain communities are on the front lines of climate change, and the Mountain Towns 2030 Climate Summit was a powerful reminder of how progress happens when we collaborate. It was inspiring to see communities sharing real-world solutions and building connections that will accelerate climate action. The peer-led sessions and the MT2030 Elevate Scholarship recipients brought fresh perspectives that will help ensure every community has a voice in shaping a more sustainable future.”

      First-of-its-kind digital cards

In an industry first, guests can also now collect digital cards representing the 66 Hawaiian Airlines aircraft. Today is such an exciting day for us at Hawaiian Airlines. To collect a digital card, here’s what to do:

      • Look for the aircraft name plate located near the main boarding door and find the NFC tag.
      • Unlock your smartphone and tap it against the NFC tag (having your camera on is not necessary).
      • Guests will be directed to visit and sign into pilotcards.hawaiianairlines.com.
      • If you’re collecting a card for the first time, an animation of a digital card pack will appear, and you can learn about the story behind your aircraft’s name.
      • The card will be stored in your digital binder, which you can return to whenever you want.

Guests can collect a digital card throughout their flight while connected to our complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi. Those traveling on our Boeing 717 fleet can collect while boarding or deplaning using their cellular data

Alaska Air Group announces executive appointments and promotions within Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air operations

      Alaska-AirGroup-Featured

The Alaska Air Group board of directors has elected four leaders into senior positions across Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, Alaska’s wholly-owned regional carrier. These appointments place proven leaders at the helm of critical operational functions across Air Group’s airlines, reinforcing the company’s commitment to safety, care and operational excellence.

The leaders and their new roles, effective this month are:

      • Nathan Engel, who has been elected vice president of maintenance operations at Alaska Airlines
      • Carlos Zendejas, who has been promoted to senior vice president of operations at Horizon Air
      • Chéri Ruger, who has been promoted to vice president of people, labor relations and inflight operations at Horizon Air
      • Baron Converse, who has been promoted to vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air

Nathan Engel, vice president of maintenance operations at Alaska Airlines

As Alaska’s vice president of maintenance operations, Engel will manage the long-term strategy and financial performance of the airline’s maintenance operations workgroup, leading a team of technicians and other maintenance professionals and overseeing safety and reliability efforts.

Engel’s 37-year career in the industry includes decades in maintenance and engineering leadership, with deep experience at Alaska and Horizon. For the last year, he has served as the vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon. Prior to Horizon, Engel served in executive maintenance and operations roles at both Alaska and Horizon, responsible for strategic and operational leadership for line, heavy and on-call maintenance, maintenance control and quality control. He also worked for Amazon and, most recently, for Hawaiian Airlines as senior manager of maintenance in Seattle. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

John Wiitala will serve in a newly-created role as vice president of technical operations, overseeing the airline’s engineering, quality systems and material management needs. The division of Engel and Wiitala’s roles aligns with industry best practice, with both leaders reporting to Berry.

      Nathan Engel

Nathan’s extensive knowledge will be critical as we continue work to integrate Alaska’s and Hawaiian’s processes. His expertise in commercial aviation maintenance and relentless focus on maintenance’s critical role in ensuring safety and reliability will be pivotal. Nathan is also a phenomenal people leader who cares deeply about his teams. His leadership will be essential in bringing the teams at Alaska and Hawaiian together over the next few years.

      Jason Berry

      Chief operating officer, Alaska Airlines

Carlos Zendejas, senior vice president of Horizon Air operations

In his expanded role as senior vice president of operations at Horizon Air, Zendejas will oversee flight operations, maintenance and engineering and station operations for Alaska Air Group’s wholly-owned regional carrier.

Zendejas is a 35-year industry veteran who spent 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. During his more than 20 years at Air Group, he has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility. Prior to joining Horizon in 2017, Zendejas served as Alaska Airlines’ Seattle base chief pilot, responsible for the day-to-day operations and performance of more than 1,000 pilots. He was promoted to Horizon vice president of flight operations in 2020.

      Carlos Zendejas

Chéri Ruger, vice president of people, labor relations and inflight operations at Horizon Air

As Horizon’s vice president of people, labor relations and inflight operations, Ruger will continue to set the long-term strategy of people and labor relations initiatives to support Horizon’s business objectives. In this newly created role, she will also be responsible for overseeing more than 600 flight attendants, leading the operational and financial performance of the workgroup.

Ruger’s career at Horizon Air began nearly 25 years ago as a flight attendant. Since then, she’s held roles with increasing responsibility in HR supporting airport operations, customer service, inflight and maintenance and engineering. Ruger also supported McGee Air Services as the managing director of human resources where she directed the core HR functions, scaling to support 2,000 employees within a five-year period of rapid growth and expansion. Most recently, Ruger served as the managing director of people and labor relations at Horizon Air.

      Carlos Zendejas

Baron Converse, vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air

Converse will succeed Engel as the vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air and will be responsible for the long-term strategy and daily operational execution of the regional carrier’s maintenance organization. His team of senior leaders and technical professionals are responsible for line maintenance operations, airframe/component/engine maintenance, quality assurance, maintenance planning, engineering and reliability, fleet projects and stores and distribution.

Celebrating a more than 30-year career at the airline, Converse joined Horizon Air in 1994 as an airframe and powerplant technician. Prior to this promotion, he served as the managing director of maintenance operations and the director of line maintenance and planning.

      Carlos Zendejas

Horizon is in truly capable hands with these leaders. Carlos, Chéri and Baron are exceptional aviation professionals who understand the complexity of our regional operation while also providing steady and caring leadership to the more than 3,600 Horizon employees.”

      Summary

This Veterans Day, we’re recognizing recent meaningful moments of care and connection shared between our dedicated employees and our military and veteran community.

Whether they’re employees, guests or active-duty military members flying on assignment, we’re honored to call veterans and service members a part of our family and prioritize their care and comfort on every flight and in every interaction.

For the 30,000+ employees across Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air, serving military members is a deeply personal experience. Whether they’re employees, guests or active-duty military members flying on assignment, we’re honored to call veterans and service members a part of our family and prioritize their care and comfort on every flight and in every interaction.

This Veterans Day, join us in recognizing recent meaningful moments of care and connection shared between our dedicated employees and our military and veteran community.

      Image of veterans welcome

      A surprise reunion

This year alone, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, in partnership with the Honor Flight Network, will fly over 2,000 veterans and their families to Washington, D.C., for a once-in-a-lifetime memorial experience.

While all Honor Flights are special to us, some tug a little deeper at our hearts. For one of our pilots, Alaska Airlines First Officer Joan, it hit home personally: her Uncle Joe, an Army Vietnam veteran, was scheduled to be one of the veterans on an Honor Flight. When we learned this, we rearranged Joan’s schedule so she could pilot the flight and surprise her uncle (and you bet we caught the moment on video!).

      A meaningful final flight

Leslie, a Marine Corps veteran, loved routine and respected tradition. His occasional cocktail before dinner was always in the same glass, a vintage Alaska Airlines tumbler — a tribute to his favorite airline. For Leslie, flying with Alaska Airlines also meant flying with family: His wife was an Alaska flight attendant in the early years on Operation Magic Carpet, and his daughter-in-law Gaylene has built a 40-year career at Alaska.

He was known to show off his original Alaska Airlines “Gold Coast Travel” vintage-era mileage card in conversations, which he’d never bothered to replace and kept in his wallet. “He was pretty proud of his airline,” said Gaylene.

Photo caption: Leslie showing off his “Gold Coast Travel” mileage card, with daughter-in-law Gaylene, a 40-year Alaska Airlines employee

Photo of Leslie holding his mileage card

Leslie was a lot of things — Alaska Airlines fan, husband, father and grandpa — but he was, first and foremost, a Marine. Born in May 1925 in Redmond, Wash., he joined the United States Marine Corps in January 1944 and served in the World War II Pacific campaign at Majuro Atoll, loading ordnance on dive bombers. After coming home, he joined the Reserves at Sandpoint Naval Air Station, training recruits and earning his bachelor’s in forestry management at the University of Washington. He completed his service in 1951 as a Master Sergeant — the highest rank an enlisted service member can achieve.

In May 2016, Leslie participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with other veterans. When he died this summer, just shy of his 100th birthday, his family requested that his favorite airline transport him to his final resting place.  We gladly agreed.

As Leslie’s final journey approached, teams across Alaska Airlines rallied to ensure every detail was covered through our Fallen Soldier Program. His remains were loaded onto Alaska’s ‘Honoring Those Who Serve’ aircraft on a flight from Houston to Seattle. Our pilots and flight attendants met his family members and provided a tribute announcement onboard. Upon arrival, active-duty Marines stood at attention at the gate to render a salute as the family deplaned.

Every detail and gesture was a testament to our company’s shared commitment to honoring the heroes who have touched our history.

“I cannot begin to tell you what this meant to our family. That the company did what they did to honor my father-in-law,” Gaylene said. “It was a sendoff worthy of a hero.”

A hero’s welcome home to Hawaiʻi

Fourteen Vietnam War veterans from Hawaiʻi returned home on Hawaiian Airlines after a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Washington, D.C., in early October. When they landed, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines employees gathered at the gate and made sure every veteran in the group received a proper hero’s welcome. The trip was completely free for the veterans and made possible through our partnership with the Honor Flight Network’s Lone Eagle program.

FAA mandated flight reductions and impacts to Alaska Air Group

      Alaska-AirGroup-Featured

      Thursday, Nov. 13 – 10:45 a.m. Pacific Time

As the federal government shutdown comes to an end, Alaska Airlines welcomes this important step toward restoring normalcy for our guests, employees and the communities we serve. We are in close contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and are prepared to resume our full schedule as soon as the FAA lifts the order and it is safe to do so.

Our teams have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we can ramp up operations quickly and efficiently. We extend our deepest gratitude to our employees for their extraordinary dedication and professionalism during this challenging period. Their resilience and commitment have been the backbone of our operation. We also thank our guests for their patience, understanding and continued trust as we worked through these unprecedented disruptions together.

As we move forward, we encourage all travelers to check the latest updates on their flights via our website and app. We remain committed to transparent communication and will provide timely information as we restore our schedule.

      Friday, Nov. 7 – 3:40 p.m. Pacific Time

We have received and are complying with the FAA’s order to reduce flight operations at 40 domestic airports while doing everything possible to minimize disruptions for our guests.

We are still operating more than 1,500 flights each day, and to date, 100% of guests impacted by these FAA-mandated cancellations for Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 8 have been rebooked on new flights to their destinations. If a guest has not received communication from Alaska or Hawaiian about their Friday or Saturday flight, it has not been impacted by the FAA mandate.

Our goal is to comply with the order while maintaining the highest possible schedule reliability. The specific routes affected may vary from day to day as we continue applying our approach of prioritizing high-frequency routes to minimize disruption for our guests. We remain fully committed to maintaining air service to every community we serve.

We expect to cancel roughly 36-40 flights each day through Sunday, Nov. 9. Guests will continue to receive communication and rebooking options from Alaska or Hawaiian if they have an impacted flight. A flexible travel policy remains in effect for guests looking to adjust their own travel. Details can be found at alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com.

We deeply appreciate our guests’ patience and understanding as we work to minimize disruptions caused by these cancellations. We are also sincerely grateful to the air traffic controllers and TSA and CBP officers who continue to ensure the safety and functioning of air travel despite not receiving pay. We strongly urge our federal leaders to reach an immediate resolution to end the shutdown.

We will continue to keep our guests informed of any further updates or schedule adjustments.

      Thursday, Nov. 6 – 1:15 p.m. Pacific Time

In light of ATC staffing shortages due to the ongoing government shutdown, the FAA has directed U.S. airlines to reduce flights at 40 domestic airports.  We have assessed our schedule and begun canceling a limited number of flights effective Friday, November 7. The FAA’s directive is expected to remain in place until further guidance is issued and the shutdown concludes. International flying is not expected to be impacted.

We are sorry for this unexpected disruption. We know that when guests book their travel with Alaska and Hawaiian, they are trusting us to get them to their destination safely, on time and with the care both our brands are known for. As we assessed the FAA’s directive and our schedule, we worked to ensure smaller and remote communities that are reliant upon air travel are protected. Most of our cancellations are on routes with a higher frequency of flights, allowing most guests to be reaccommodated with as little disruption as possible.

Guests whose flights are canceled will be reaccommodated on other flights as available or offered a full refund. Those whose flights are impacted will receive communication directly from Alaska and Hawaiian. We have also issued a flexible travel policy that allows guests to adjust their travel during this uncertain time. We encourage all guests to check the status of their flights on the Alaska or Hawaiian app or our websites alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com to utilize self-service rebooking options.

We remain grateful to every air traffic controller and TSA or CBP officer who is working without pay to keep air travel functioning safely. We continue to strongly urge our federal leaders to reach an immediate resolution and end the shutdown.
