45 years of Horizon Air: Eight employees share why Horizon feels like family

Horizon employees

Summary

Horizon Air is celebrating 45 years of connecting communities across the West, having grown from a single Seattle-to-Yakima flight into an extensive regional network served by 49 Embraer E175s.

Eight Horizon employees share their memories that reflect Horizon’s people-first culture and signature “Horizon Heart.”

Since day one, Horizon Air’s story has been defined by growth, resilience and heart. Forty-five years ago, on Sept. 1, 1981, the regional carrier launched its inaugural flight from Seattle to Yakima, Washington, operating two Fokker F-27 Friendship turboprops and employing fewer than 100 people. Today, Horizon plays a vital role in connecting communities across the West with a fleet of 49 Embraer 175s with more than 3,400 employees.

But Horizon’s success is about more than numbers and operational milestones. It’s about a legacy built by the passionate people behind every flight.

“This airline is remarkable because of its people. Your Horizon Heart shines through in everything you do, and you are the reason we’ve thrived for the past 45 years — and why we’ll continue to thrive for years to come,” said Andy Schneider, President and CEO of Horizon Air, in an email to employees.

As Horizon celebrates 45 years, eight employees share the moments, memories and people that have shaped their experience and made the airline feel like family.

Austen P., E175 Captain, Horizon Air

My favorite memory of my four years at Horizon is getting to work with my mom. She was a customer service agent in Seattle when I first started working here as a first officer. I loved having her work my flights, getting lunch with her on our breaks and surprising her in the terminal when she wasn’t expecting me. Even though she doesn’t work here anymore, I am forever grateful for those memories we have together!

Dianne M., Senior Employee Communications Manager, Alaska Airlines

I managed communications for Horizon from 2020 through the end of 2025. Horizon has an incredible company culture and some of the best employees and leaders. It’s a special place that’s difficult to understand until you’ve had the opportunity to experience it.

On Jan. 26, 2023, I flew on Horizon’s final Bombardier Q400 flight and helped with the employee event. Seeing employees’ love for that aircraft was incredible and represented what makes Horizon special. I even got to “autograph” the Milt Kuolt “Meatball” Q400 livery.

I carry my Horizon Heart with me every day, and I feel so fortunate that I had the opportunity to experience the amazing place that Horizon is.

Dianne at the employee event
Jen S., Flight Attendant, Horizon Air

In May, crew members were notified that we would have a Make-A-Wish flight for a young lady and her family. They were flying on Horizon to connect to a Seattle-Honolulu flight to go to the Disney resort on Oʻahu.

The night before their flight, our crew went shopping for the family while we were on a layover. Our first officer gave us ideas for decorating their seats, and we all worked together to blow up the balloons and hang streamers. While we loved surprising the little girl, the greatest gift that day was the time we shared bonding and laughing, which allowed us to extend our biggest Horizon Hearts to that Make-A-Wish recipient.

Jen and the crew in the aircraft
Jonathan R., E175 First Officer, Horizon Air

One thing I’ve learned since starting at Horizon in 2024 is that even a small moment of care can change the way a guest experiences a flight. One of my favorite examples happened while boarding a flight from Portland to San Jose over the summer with thunderstorms along the route.

A guest came onboard visibly anxious about motion sensitivity and turbulence, and he shared that he had traumatic and difficult experiences flying in the past. Rather than dismissing his concern, I took a moment to listen, relate to what he was feeling and explain what the captain and I had seen in our weather reports.

Jonathan in front of the meatball tail

We had already reviewed the weather and received a routing that would keep us away from the worst conditions, so I was able to show him on my iPad why we expected the ride to be comfortable. I didn’t know it until later, but that brief conversation totally changed the flying experience for him. He boarded worried that the flight might become overwhelming, but he got off the airplane calm and thankful.

To me, that is Horizon Heart: operating safely, doing the right thing, being kindhearted and taking the extra minute to make someone feel seen and heard. The flight itself was routine, but the interaction reminded me that our work is not just about moving an airplane from one city to another. It is about taking care of people, earning their trust and carrying forward the legacy of service that has defined Horizon since the beginning.

Tyler H., Ground Service Trainer, Horizon Air

I get to be part of all aspects of the operation as a trainer, and the camaraderie shared between Horizon’s airport and inflight crew has always been fun. Some of my favorite memories of working at Horizon involve the mighty Q400 — I really loved working those flights! And one of the coolest things I got to be part of was joining the charter team to fly and celebrate the University of Washington basketball team on our “Go Dawgs” E-175 aircraft. Every day brings new challenges and rewards, and that keeps my job fresh and exciting. My next stop at Horizon: joining the flight deck as a first officer!

Go Dawgs aircraft
Erica N., E175 First Officer, Horizon Air

I flew the Fokker F-28 for Horizon from November 1999 to September 2001. I made the difficult decision not to return after the birth of my first son. After becoming an empty nester (my boys are now 25 and 22), I wanted to fly again and am so grateful Horizon hired me back. It has felt like a return to a caring and supportive family. I love being a Horizon pilot!

Erica in the flight deck
Ryan B., Stores Agent, Alaska Airlines

I got to fly on the final revenue Q400 before the fleet retired in January 2023. It was awesome to be part of that legacy. I remember flying on them as a kid and loving the hum of the turboprop engines. I always want to try to fly Horizon every chance I get, and I will always be a huge fan — especially of the “Meatball” livery plane!

meatball aircraft
Andrew D., Customer Service Agent, Horizon Air

I had the privilege of working with my dad at Horizon Air — sometimes in unexpected ways. I recall one scorching summer day, in 2010, we got a call from dispatch that the Tri-Cities Airport was to hold an outbound flight to Seattle for a pilot who absolutely needed to get on the plane. There were no CRJ pilot reserves available in Seattle, and they were going to have to cancel multiple legs of flying later that day because there were no first officers available.

The pilot we were waiting for turned out to be my dad. My dad jumped into his own Cessna 172 and made the 15-minute flight to the airport from his house.

Andrew and his dad

The plan was to have him fly in, park his plane at the general aviation parking area next to the tower, get through TSA, board the waiting Q400 and be on their way. It seemed simple enough.

I remember standing on the ramp waiting for him to land that day. He touched down, and the left main landing gear tire of his Cessna blew out and disabled the aircraft on the runway. I could hear my dad give his plane full power and slowly get it off the runway so it wouldn’t block other traffic. I received verbal permission from station management and the control tower to go out and get my dad with a tug. As I got closer, I saw my dad running down the taxiway in his pilot uniform and dragging his crew bags. I pulled up alongside him and told him to hop on the tug. He wasn’t expecting to see me. I took him back to the terminal, he went through TSA, got on the waiting Q400 and off he went to Seattle.

I like sharing this story because it reminds me of how Horizon really felt like family. My dad dropped everything the moment he got a call because he knew it was important for that plane to get into the air. In this situation, crew scheduling, dispatch, the station team and my dad all worked together to ensure we wouldn’t let down the passengers who needed to get to their final destinations. It was an inspiration to work for a company with employees who went the extra mile under challenging circumstances. That day was an “It’s our privilege to serve you” kind of day for me.

Hawaiian Airlines and Made in Hawaiʻi Festival: More than 30 years of supporting local businesses

Festival Hero image

Summary

Hawaiian is celebrating more than 30 years of partnership with the Made in Hawaiʻi Festival, supporting local artisans, entrepreneurs and small businesses across the Islands.

More than 80 employee volunteers welcomed guests and highlighted the work of local creators, artists and chefs.

Nearly 80,000 pounds of cargo were moved across the Islands through Hawaiian Air Cargo, helping vendors bring their products to market.

Behind more than 800 vendor booths at Honolulu’s annual Made in Hawaiʻi Festival were local artisans, makers and entrepreneurs sharing their products and stories with the community.

Hawaiian Airlines has been part of the festival since its first event in 1995 and returned as presenting sponsor for this year’s four-day celebration, held Aug. 20-23. The carrier has served as an official airline sponsor since 2018.

The Made in Hawaiʻi Festival is special because it gives local entrepreneurs a place to share what they create and grow their businesses. Hawaiian has supported the festival from the beginning because these businesses strengthen our communities and carry forward Hawaiʻi’s culture and traditions. Helping them reach customers here and beyond our islands is part of how we serve Hawaiʻi.”

Showcasing Hawaiʻi brands and talent

More than 80 Hawaiian Airlines employee volunteers welcomed festivalgoers to its Island Style Mākeke, a space inspired by the familiar character of Hawaiʻi’s farm stands and community markets. Hawaiian shared the space with NOHO Home and Mana Up, highlighting products created through local partnerships. NOHO Home introduced exclusive colorways from its co-branded Leihōkū Collection, while Mana Up featured Hawaiian Airlines collaborations created with Nick Kuchar, Paper Crane Soaps, Lex Breezy, Lahaʻole, Lola Pilar and AVVA.

This year’s festival also opened with its first VIP Access Night, presented by Huakaʻi by Hawaiian, the carrier’s free travel benefits program exclusively for kamaʻāina (Hawaiʻi residents). Huakaʻi members received early access to tickets and special offers for the festival. All 7,000 VIP attendees received an exclusive cooler tote, featuring artwork by local artist Lola Pilar upon entering,

Hawaiian Airline’s commitment to culinary talent shined with live chef demonstrations inspired by its inflight menus. On Saturday, Chef Dell Valdez, who has helped shape Hawaiian’s international menus, prepared ʻulu spezzatino with Kahuku corn polenta. On Sunday, Hawaiian Airlines Chef Sheldon Simeon, who created the carrier’s recent pre-order offerings for its Main Cabin guests, demonstrated his fried garlic noodles and signed copies of his newest cookbook, “Ohana Style: Food from Hawai‘i, for Your Family,” for festivalgoers.

Supporting local businesses beyond the festival

Supporting Hawaiʻi’s makers also means helping them get their products where they need to go. For the festival, Hawaiian offered participating vendors reduced Hawaiian Air Cargo shipping rates to help transport nearly 80,000 pounds of cargo across Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island for the four-day event.

The combined carrier is also preparing to expand its cargo operations. Alaska Airlines, Inc. recently announced plans to add four freighters to its dedicated cargo fleet, effectively doubling its freighter capacity. The aircraft are expected to enter service during the first half of 2027 and will serve Alaska and Hawaiʻi, with plans for Hawaiʻi-based aircraft to carry the Hawaiian Air Cargo livery.

For Hawaiʻi businesses, the added capacity will provide greater reliability when moving goods and create more opportunities to reach customers through the combined airline’s broader network.

For Hawaiian, supporting Made in Hawaiʻi means celebrating the people behind the products and helping their businesses reach customers during the festival and throughout the year.

Paws before takeoff: What to know before traveling with a canine companion this International Dog Day and beyond

Summary

This International Dog Day, Alaska is sharing tips to help ensure seamless travel with your canine companion

International Dog Day is the perfect time to celebrate the four-legged companions who make every adventure better. From dogs small enough to settle in beneath the seat, to medium and large breeds heading to a new destination through Alaska Air Cargo’s Pet Connect™ service, Alaska and Hawaiian offer several ways to get pets where they need to go with care.

Planning ahead can make all the difference, so here are some tips and tricks for flying with a canine companion, from check-in to touchdown.

Ways to fly with a dog on Alaska and Hawaiian

Recently recognized as the most pet-friendly U.S. carrier, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines offer three ways for VIPs (very important pets) to travel:

In the cabin

Small dogs can travel in the cabin for a fee of $100 per carrier (or $35 if the travel is wholly in the state of Hawaiʻi) each way. All dogs traveling in the cabin must fit within a soft-sided carrier no larger than 17”x11”x9.5”. See the pet travel requirements page for pets in cabin for a full list of details.

In the baggage compartment on your flight

Dogs and carriers weighing up to a combined 150 pounds can travel in Alaska and Hawaiian’s temperature-controlled baggage compartment while their owners fly in the cabin. The fee is $200 each way per kennel. Discounted rates are available for travel within Alaska or Hawai’i, as well as for active-duty U.S. military or U.S. military dependents on travel orders.

Via Pet Connect™

Alaska and Hawaiian’s cargo division provides owners with the ability to send their pets to another city in the baggage compartment without being onboard the same flight. Check out Alaska’s pet shipping guide here, and you can find tips from pet shipping experts on our Alaska Air Cargo Blog here

Please be aware that these details are not exhaustive and all guests traveling with pets should consult the relevant Alaskaair.com pages for further details. This is especially true for international travel, which may include different or additional requirements than what is detailed in this post.

Five tips for stress-free travel with dogs

1. Understand breed and geographical travel restrictions

Just as not all dogs are the right size to travel in the cabin, breed and destinations can add additional rules determining when and where your pet can fly. For example, brachycephalic, or “short-nosed” dogs, are not permitted to fly in the baggage compartment, and detailed instructions are available on alaskaair.com and hawaiianair.com for dogs traveling to Hawaii or internationally. For dogs flying via Pet Connect™, a full list of travel embargoes can be found here.

2. Ensure the dog’s carrier or kennel is the right size

Beyond size parameters for carriers in the cabin, there are specific carrier requirements for pets traveling in the baggage compartment. Some of these apply to all dogs traveling in the cargo hold, such as carriers needing to be large enough for your dog to turn around, lie down freely, and fully stand up without their ears touching the top, while others are destination-specific, such as kennels over 28” not being permitted on flights between the Hawaiian Islands.

3. Remember to reserve space

Once guests have reviewed policies for pet travel and booked a passenger ticket, they can contact Guest Care to reserve pet space. If the plan is to ship a pet via Pet Connect™, contact the Alaska Air Cargo Call Center. Space is subject to availability and if plans include travel on another airline, be sure to contact the partner airline directly to reserve space, determine fees and obtain any additional information.

4. Check weather conditions and flight status before taking your pet to the airport

Before a flight, check for weather-related restrictions on pet travel. Pets often can’t fly in the cargo compartment when temperatures are hotter than 85 degrees or cooler than 45 degrees in departure or destination cities.  Additionally, guests are encouraged to check the status of their canine companion’s flight before heading to the cargo station or the airport. If a flight is canceled, rebook their travel via 1-800-252-7522 when traveling with your pet or 1-800-225-2752 when using Pet Connect.

5. Prep pups for success on their travel day

Guests are encouraged to give pets a pre-airport workout such as a long walk, make sure to have them go to the bathroom ahead of time, and avoid overwatering or overfeeding before a trip. When dropping pets off, don’t forget to bring pet identification and allow extra time in the lobby.

Meet the Hawaiian Airlines engineer turning historic aircraft into LEGO art

Ashton Hero with 717

By day, Ashton S. helps keep Hawaiian Airlines’ aircraft cabins in top shape, designing, maintaining and troubleshooting cabin systems as a Honolulu-based interior engineer. By night, he builds detailed replicas of the airline’s most iconic aircraft from his dining room table, one LEGO brick at a time.

Through Oct. 11, Oʻahu visitors can experience Ashton’s hobby up close when visiting Bishop Museum’s “Aloha Bricks ’26: Stories of Hawaiʻi” exhibit, where five of his custom-built LEGO aircraft models are on display. The models pay homage to five aircraft types that played pivotal roles in Hawaiian’s nearly century-long history: the 1929 Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker, a Douglas DC-3 and DC-9, a Boeing 717 and 787 Dreamliner.

Lego 717 and actual 717

The “Aloha Bricks” display marries Ashton’s longtime interest in taking things apart and rebuilding them or turning the pieces into something new. “I’ve always been into creating things,” he said. “Whether it was building train tracks across my floor as a kid or building LEGO models, I’ve always liked figuring out how things work.”

That love of tinkering led Ashton to earn a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, before starting his career at Hawaiian. Now, he spends his days reenvisioning and finding solutions for aircraft cabin furnishings and materials, including seats, galley appliances, wall placards, stowage bins and lighting.

As he works, he draws on the problem-solving skills he developed from building with LEGO bricks as a child.

How to build a LEGO aircraft

Building a LEGO airplane starts long before the first bricks snap into place. Ashton starts by studying aircraft schematics, setting the model’s scale and designing it digitally using specialized software. He then orders the parts he needs (often through secondhand stores) and works through trial and error as he builds each aircraft’s unique shapes and components.

“It’s kind of physical, then digital, then back to physical,” he explained.

The process can be flawed at times, revealing challenges computers miss. For example, a digital model may appear structurally sound but fall apart when assembled, forcing him to make changes along the way.

Ashton working on his LEGO 717

From LEGO hobbyist to Hawaiian Airlines exhibit designer

Ashton first learned about the opportunity to contribute to Bishop Museum’s exhibit via the Hawaiʻi LEGO Users Group (HLUG), a local club where he has long been a member. When museum organizers approached the group about creating displays that represented iconic symbols of Hawaiʻi life, Hawaiian was an obvious inclusion. At the time, Ashton was already building a detailed LEGO model of the 717 — his favorite aircraft in Hawaiian’s fleet.

“When they described what they were looking for, I showed them a picture of what I was working on,” he said. “They said, ‘That’s exactly what we want.’”

Ashton built his five LEGO aircraft by hand and spent over 180 hours piecing them together. Each model is made of thousands of LEGO bricks, and Ashton estimates his “Aloha Bricks” display totals more than 1 million pieces, with his most ambitious build, the 787 Dreamliner, comprising more than 10,000 parts.

LEGO HA tail
Ashton selected the five featured aircraft to help tell Hawaiian’s story. Each model in the exhibit reflects a different chapter of the airline’s legacy as Hawaiʻi’s first and longest-serving carrier.
  • The Bellanca represents the airline’s earliest days when it was known as Inter-Island Airways. The single-engine aircraft first launched into service on Oct. 6, 1929, with a series of sightseeing flights around Oʻahu as a trial for commercial operations. It successfully carried 76 passengers that day and sparked enough curiosity among locals and visitors to convince the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company board to expand its footprint into aviation. One month later, on Nov. 11, 1929, Inter-Island Airways was incorporated, and sightseeing tours took off with the Bellanca logging nearly 50 flight hours that month.
  • The propellor-driven DC-3, introduced in 1941, was the first aircraft to fly with the Hawaiian Airlines name on its fuselage. After flying amphibious planes for nearly 12 years, the airline’s founder, Stan Kennedy, pushed for the acquisition of three DC-3s, the aircraft recognized as the greatest of its time. It later propelled the carrier into transpacific flying and served as the backbone of its Neighbor Island fleet for two decades.
  • The DC-9 brought Hawaiian into the jet age, operating the carrier’s Neighbor Island routes. It was the first aircraft to feature an iteration of the carrier’s iconic Pualani logo.
  • The 717 was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the DC-9 and continues to serve as the dedicated aircraft of Hawaiian’s Neighbor Island network, while the 787 Dreamliner symbolizes Alaska and Hawaiian’s new era of global flying as a combined carrier.

For Ashton, seeing his completed work on such a public display will always be a surreal moment. “My favorite thing is watching other people react to the exhibit,” he said. “Especially kids. Maybe it will inspire one of them to become an engineer someday too.”
