Historical hops to explore America’s heritage trails and celebrate its 250th anniversary

Boston freedom trail

The story of the United States of America doesn’t just live in its cities — it unfolds along the trails that cross its landscapes, connecting history, culture and natural beauty.

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary on July 4, there’s no better time to explore the landmarks and pathways that helped shape it. With Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air’s extensive domestic network, embarking on a meaningful trip to U.S. history is worthwhile for every traveler, from solo adventurers on a weekend getaway or summer vacation with the family.

Iditarod

Trace Alaska’s frontier legacy across the Iditarod National Historic Trail

What to expect: Explore Alaska’s legacy of movement and resilience along the Iditarod National Historic Trail, where historic routes reveal how communities stayed connected across vast, rugged terrain. It’s a story of endurance, tradition and innovation that still shapes the state today.

Start at historic spots like The Anchorage Museum to learn about the people, cultures and ideas behind Alaska’s early transportation routes. The trail itself spans more than 1,000 miles, once traveled by Alaska Native peoples, traders and dog sled teams. Today, the trail is primarily used for winter recreation and the world-famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Accessible segments near Knik (Knik River Public Use Area) and Eagle River (Eagle River Nature Center) offer short hikes and scenic walks, allowing travelers to experience parts of the trail without venturing deep into the backcountry.

How to get there: Take a direct or one-stop flight to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) via Alaska Airlines.

Why go here: Visitors can connect with the trail’s story through local exhibits and traditions that highlight the determination it took to link Alaska’s remote communities.

Kona

Gain a sense of place on Hawaiʻi’s Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail

What to expect: Get to know Hawaiʻi beyond the beaches by wandering the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, where ancient pathways reveal centuries of Native Hawaiian history and culture. This coastal trail offers a deeper connection to the Islands through culturally significant stories, long-held traditions and volcanic landscapes that have shaped life here for generations.

Spanning 175 miles of Hawaiʻi Island, the trail follows historic routes that once linked distant coastal communities. A must-visit is Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, a sacred place of refuge where, in traditional Hawaiian society, those who broke strict cultural laws could seek forgiveness and protection, set against a stunning oceanfront backdrop.

How to get there: Take a direct or one-stop flight to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) via Hawaiian Airlines.

Why go here: Encounter preserved cultural sites and opportunities to learn about Native Hawaiian practices, making for a meaningful and immersive way to experience the Islands.

Boston public garden

Explore America’s origins on the Freedom Trail

What to expect: Step into the story of America’s founding along Boston’s Freedom Trail, where a simple red-brick path leads you through the events and places that shaped the nation’s earliest years. Compact yet rich in history, it’s an immersive walk through the American Revolution where each stop turns history into something you can see and feel, not just read about in textbooks.

Stretching just 2.5 miles, the trail connects 16 historic sites woven into Boston’s historic streets. Along the way, you’ll encounter iconic landmarks like Faneuil Hall, the Massachusetts State House and Old North Church, where signal lanterns sparked Paul Revere’s famous 1775 ride.

How to get there: Take a direct or one-stop flight to Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) via Alaska Airlines.

Why go here: Each stop adds depth to the story, with resources from Boston National Historical Park helping bring these pivotal moments and the people behind them to life.

Fort McHenry

Sing the national anthem on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail

What to expect: Follow the story behind America’s national anthem along a scenic route where history and waterfront landscapes intertwine. The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail traces the events of the War of 1812, offering a blend of cultural landmarks, coastal views and the moments that inspired a defining symbol of the nation.

Start in Washington, D.C., then follow the trail into Maryland along roughly 560 miles of historic waterways and communities tied to the Chesapeake Campaign. A highlight is Baltimore’s Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, where the sight of the American flag after a British bombardment in 1814 inspired “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

How to get there: Take a direct or one-stop flight to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) via Alaska Airlines.

Why go here: Find a mix of waterfront parks, museums and cultural sites that bring this chapter of history to life, all set against the backdrop of Chesapeake Bay’s natural beauty.

These historic landmarks honor the history of the United States and the service members who have fought to protect it. To honor their legacy, Alaska Airlines is a proud supporter of the Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit helping veterans travel to Washington, D.C., free of charge, to visit the memorials dedicated to their service.

Martin Luther King memorial

Embrace Southern history on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail

What to expect: Learn about defining moments of American history across the South, where everyday places — churches, schools and city streets — became powerful centers of the Civil Rights Movement. The U.S. Civil Rights Trail features key historic Civil Rights landmarks across multiple Southern states, offering a meaningful journey through stories of resilience and activism that continue to shape the country today.

Begin in Atlanta at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, where travelers can visit the leader’s birth home and Ebenezer Baptist Church to get to know his life and legacy. From there, continue to cities like Birmingham, Montgomery and Jackson, each rich with landmarks that tell the story of the movement. Highlights include Birmingham’s historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and cultural institutions like the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

How to get there: Take a direct or one-stop flight to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) via Alaska Airlines.

Why go here: With more than 100 sites along the trail, each stop brings the movement to life, inviting a deeper connection to the people, places and events that helped transform the nation.

Alaska Airlines draws thousands to annual Aviation Day events, including Hawaiian Airlines’ first

Aviation day header

Summary

Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air have wrapped up annual Aviation Day events in Anchorage, Honolulu, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle, which take place each spring.

This year marked Hawaiian’s first Aviation Day in Honolulu, building on its history of youth engagement in the Hawaiʻi community.

With nearly 4400 participants in attendance across the five cities, Aviation Day provided youth with the opportunity to learn about careers in aviation and interact with employees across the business.

For the last 18 years, Alaska Airlines’ signature Aviation Day events have successfully engaged youth across its network with hands-on, employee-led events designed to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals. Held each spring in Seattle, Anchorage, Portland, San Francisco and now Honolulu, the full-day community gatherings provide youth with the opportunity to see aircraft up close and meet the airline’s amazing employees, as well as representatives from places like the FAA, local fire departments, fuel companies and local airports.

This year, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air welcomed nearly 4400 attendees across the five cities. This success reflects the incredible commitment of the combined carrier’s many pilots, flight attendants, and other employee volunteers, along with community and industry partners, whose time and energy helped create a meaningful and memorable experience for each attendee.

ASHA

Hawaiian Airlines hosts Honolulu’s first-ever Aviation Day

In a first for the combined company, Hawaiian hosted its inaugural Aviation Day this year. Over 110 employees, including 70 Team Kōkua volunteers and 40 instructors, welcomed more than 300 local youth, along with their parents or chaperones, from public and private schools across the state to its Honolulu offices and maintenance and cargo facilities.

Attendees got an inside look at the carrier’s corporate roles, such as network planning, revenue management and airline catering and explored pilot preparation using advanced training and simulator technology, safety practices across maintenance and engineering, and flight attendant training that delivers a safe, exceptional onboard experience. They also learned about the vital role airport operations play in keeping Hawaiian’s network running smoothly and how Hawaiian Air Cargo transports critical freight to, from and within the Hawaiian Islands.

Throughout the day, youth engaged directly with employees as well as a dozen partners specializing in various aviation-related fields. At its core, the experience was designed to help every attendee see themselves and their future in aviation at Hawaiʻi’s carrier.

“Aviation Day is an opportunity to spark an interest in aviation that could last a lifetime. I’ve been in the industry for over 40 years and every day is exciting. It’s an amazing thing to take people to where they want to be and connect the world with aloha, and it’s a special experience to share that excitement with the next generation.”

Jim Landers

Head of Hawai‘i Operations , Hawaiian Airlines

In addition to Aviation Day, Alaska, Horizon and Hawaiian regularly collaborate with local organizations throughout Hawaiʻi and the U.S. West Coast to inspire students, empower career readiness and provide exposure to aviation careers year-round.

Atmos™ Rewards members now unlock free inflight Wi-Fi on Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, thanks to T-Mobile

Summary

Alaska Airlines recognizes T-Mobile for its key contributions in making complimentary Wi-Fi possible so that guests can stay connected throughout their journey

Alaska and Hawaiian announced 100% of their regional fleet and the first 50 of its mainline aircraft are now equipped with Starlink’s fastest Wi-Fi in the sky, marking a significant milestone in the rapid rollout across the combined fleet

Complimentary, ultra-fast Wi-Fi is available on all Hawaiian Airlines aircraft flying to and from Hawai‘i, reinforcing its leadership as the first major U.S. airline to bring the service to the skies

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines today announced major progress in the rollout of free, lightning-fast Wi-Fi across the combined fleet, with approximately 150 aircraft now equipped — putting the airline ahead of schedule in enhancing connectivity and delivering an industry-leading guest experience. The milestone positions Alaska and Hawaiian among the first to offer ultra-fast, free inflight Wi-Fi across their fleet.

As part of this rollout, Alaska and Hawaiian are introducing a new onboard portal beginning in June that makes it easy for guests to access fast, complimentary inflight Wi‑Fi by joining Atmos™ Rewards, the airline’s combined loyalty program. The experience will become standard across Starlink-equipped flights by mid-July, with existing Atmos Rewards members connecting automatically through a streamlined interface and new guests able to sign up in just a few steps. Enrollment in Atmos Rewards, which is this year’s winner of NerdWallet’s Best Airline Rewards Program, is free and can be completed in just seconds before or during travel. The airline’s inflight Wi-Fi, which is complimentary thanks to T-Mobile, is powered by Starlink – the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky.

For years, T-Mobile has played a key role in keeping our guests connected, and we’re proud to now offer Starlink, the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky, to Atmos members for free, made possible through our work with T-Mobile. We’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response from our guests, and we couldn’t have done it without T-Mobile as we continue to raise the bar for the experience across Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.”

Shane Jones

Senior Vice President of Fleet, Products and Guest Experience, Alaska Airlines

Woman on her phone

Our relationship with Alaska Airlines has helped redefine what travelers can expect from inflight connectivity, and today’s milestone is another important step forward. Bringing complimentary inflight Wi-Fi to more travelers across both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines makes it easier to stay connected throughout their journey. The new, streamlined experience for accessing Wi-Fi reflects our shared commitment to delivering a better, more seamless travel experience.”

Mike Belcher

Head of Partnerships & Business Development, T-Mobile

Following Hawaiian’s lead in becoming the first U.S.-based major airline to bring Starlink to the skies in 2024, Alaska began installation of high-speed Wi-Fi service on its fleet late last year. Within months, Alaska became the first U.S. carrier to install Starlink across its entire regional jet fleet. With installations now underway across the mainline fleet, Alaska is on track to bring Starlink to its entire widebody fleet this fall and operate more Starlink-equipped departures from Hawai‘i, Portland, San Diego and Seattle than any other airline. This includes its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, operated on the carrier’s long-haul international flights between Seattle and Incheon-Seoul, London, Rome and Tokyo beginning this fall. The airline expects to complete installation across the remaining mainline fleet by 2027.

Now guests can follow Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ Wi-Fi installation progress with this tracker. Compared to legacy inflight Wi-Fi systems, Starlink offers low latency and significantly faster speeds, allowing guests to stream, browse and scroll just like at home – part of Alaska and Hawaiian’s investment in its evolution into a global premium carrier with the guest in mind every step of the journey.

You come here to drift, daydream, slow down, look up and lose track of time in the stillness and wonder of the night sky.

Fun fact: Hawaiian honors the legacy of early Polynesian voyagers and traditional wayfinding across its fleet, including naming its Airbus A330s after stars and constellations used for celestial navigation.

Where to stay for the perfect Latin America getaway with Alaska Airlines

Belize

Latin America is the kind of place that turns a trip into a lifelong obsession. The first time I visited another country was when the siren song of the rainforest brought me to Costa Rica, and since then, I have returned to this part of the world countless times.

Alaska Airlines flies to four of the region’s most captivating destinations — Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala — and with Alaska Vacations, planning a visit has never been simpler. Seamlessly bundle your flight, hotel and rental car into one booking, earn Atmos™ Rewards points on the entire package, and save the energy you’d otherwise spend on trip logistics.

Here’s my country-by-country guide on where to go and stay once you get to your Latin American destination.

Placencia

Mexico: Go all out on the resort

Alaska flies to eight airports in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Cancun. The country has mastered the art of the luxury resort, and this is one destination where leaning into a world-class property is absolutely the right call. The Riviera Maya alone is home to some of the most celebrated hotels on the planet — Palmaïa, Hotel Xcaret and the iconic Rosewood Mayakoba, where jungle canals wind past your villa and the sea waits just beyond the mangroves.

These properties are destinations unto themselves, with exceptional dining, spa programs and beach clubs. My biggest tip: explore beyond the resort. Mexico is a dynamic, multifaceted destination to try incredible food, indulge in amazing shopping and explore history and culture.

mexico

Costa Rica: Embrace the eco-lodge

Costa Rica practically invented responsible tourism, and the lodging reflects it. Skip the large resort complexes and instead seek out eco-lodges and small beds nestled in or near the national parks. These properties tend to have naturalist guides on staff, organic farm-to-table meals, and feel designed to immerse guests in the wild.

Whether you’re based near Monteverde’s cloud forests, the Osa Peninsula or Arenal volcano, smaller stays mean closer wildlife encounters and a lighter footprint. Don’t try to see the whole country in one trip; choose two regions maximum. Costa Rica is small on a map, but the drives between areas are long, and the roads are unpredictable.

Arenal lodge

Guatemala: Stay in colonial guesthouses or boutique hotels

Guatemala is chronically underrated, and Antigua — the colonial gem at the foot of three volcanoes — is its crown jewel. Here, converted colonial guesthouses and small boutique hotels built into 16th-century architecture give you history you can sleep in, like my personal favorite, Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo Antigua. Lake Atitlán deserves its own visit, where village guesthouses along the shore offer some of the most dramatic views on earth.

Traffic can be extremely unpredictable here — the drive from Antigua to the airport can range from 45 minutes to three hours — so ask around and plan ahead to reach your flight on time. And stay confident if you’re the driver, because those ornate, colorful buses are called “Chicken Buses” due to how they play chicken on the narrow mountain roads.

Guatemala

Belize: Enjoy local hospitality in a family-owned boutique

Belize is virtually untouched by chain hotels, keeping it a destination of primarily family-owned boutique properties that put genuine hospitality front and center. The intimate hideaways of the cayes and jungle — typically no more than 30 rooms — offer an intimacy that is worlds away from the mega resort experience.

Belize’s small size often surprises visitors, but it means there’s no need to choose between the sea and the jungle: diving the Blue Hole, relaxing on the beach, exploring the intricate cave systems and Maya ruins inland and waking up before the sun with a pair of binoculars to go spot toucans are all doable in a single trip. And in terms of timing, consider an off-season visit — you never know what you might discover.

How Alaska Vacations and Atmos™ Rewards make this easier

I booked a recent trip to Belize through Alaska Vacations (and earned Atmos points) in one seamless transaction — my Alaska Airlines flight from San Francisco via Los Angeles, a stay at the beautiful Itz’ana Resort in Placencia and an Avis rental car waiting at the airport. And my Atmos Gold status earned me a coveted upgrade to first class, easing me into the relaxation I was seeking as soon as I hit the airport lounge.

Latin America is waiting. Let Alaska Airlines get you there.

Minicucci in Italy: Ben’s five tips to make the most of a trip to Rome

Ben in front of Colosseum

One of the best parts of traveling the world is getting to experience places and cultures through the food we eat and the drinks we have along the way. With our nonstop flight between Seattle and Rome, Alaska Airlines has unlocked your direct connection to Italy’s history, pace of life, and yes, some legendary pasta and wine.

Launching nonstop service to Rome was particularly special to me – Italy is in my blood and a big part of my identity. My parents were born about 150 miles southeast of Rome, in the province of Campobasso, and they immigrated to Canada in the 1950s, a decade before I was born. I grew up in a very Italian household. At home, we spoke the unique dialect of their tiny village, shared traditions and homemade meals, and celebrated our heritage with enormous pride.

Ben in Rome

After I received my engineering degree from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, I made my first trip to Campobasso to surprise my grandparents. I remember arriving in the village, jumping right into conversations with the locals and being proud of the double takes I’d gotten: They couldn’t believe this kid from Montreal was speaking their dialect. That trip really showed me the power that travel has in connecting people – across oceans, generations and cultures. All that to say, you can imagine how proud I was to share our heritage with my family and show them the ropes following Alaska’s inaugural flight from Seattle to Rome.

I encourage everyone, at least once in their life, to experience Rome, a place I deeply love. Here are a few things I always recommend for an authentic and iconic experience in Italy’s capital city.

Ben in Rome
Ben in Rome

Plan to walk – a lot

Rome is best experienced by foot, and some of the best moments will be while walking around the city, navigating narrow alleys and exploring piazzas with the people you love.

Pack comfortable clothes and shoes because you will walk a lot and log some serious steps on the sampietrini – the basalt cobblestones that pave the historic streets (we topped more than 20,000 steps each day). My partner Miranda would also encourage bringing a jacket or scarf in case you need to cover your shoulders while visiting the historic churches or the Vatican.

Start your day with espresso – and keep it simple

If you love coffee, there is great espresso everywhere in Rome. If you are ordering a shot, you can stand right there at the counter and make it quick. Or grab a table and enjoy the experience: take in the aromas of the roasted beans and steamed milk, listen to the Italians sharing chiacchiera (small talk), and watch the baristas do their masterful work.

Another tip: Italian culture reserves milk-based drinks, like the cappuccino, for the morning – not in the afternoon. Never order a cappuccino after 11 a.m. as it’s said to be bad for your digestion. If you need a pick-me-up later in the day, go with espresso.

Ben sipping espresso

Always make time for gelato

Gelato is definitely part of the Rome experience. Look for places with simple ingredients, metal storage containers, and natural colors. Italy is known for some amazing flavors that are nods to their rich agriculture (think: stracciatella, pistachio, hazelnut). For me, I love the simplicity of a rich vanilla. Gelato isn’t something to overthink. Savor the ingredients, explore different shops and flavors with curiosity, and make gelato an excuse to cool off and take a leisurely break.

See the big sites early

Save iconic places like the Trevi Fountain and the outside of the Colosseum for the early morning hours, like 6 a.m. You’ll avoid the crowds and it’s much quieter, so you’ll get a completely different perspective.

If I could only go to one monument in Rome, it would be the Colosseum. It’s an enormous structure, with arches and walkways made of stone and concrete. Every time I go, I try to look at it through my engineering lens and work out questions like, how does something built 2,000 years ago still stand today? The Colosseum was crafted deliberately and with discipline, strong fundamentals, and longevity in mind – much like how I think of Alaska and our future as a global carrier with a strong foundation.

Ben trevi fountain

Head just off the main streets for meals

Almost always, the best food is just a block or two away from the city’s busiest areas on a random side street. There, you’ll find smaller, family-run restaurants where the pace is slower, and the food is its own unique experience. And don’t judge a book by its cover: sometimes these mom-and-pop spots may not look like much, but they could offer the best eating and drinking you will ever encounter. Another tip: try to go where the Italians go and trust the places that have a lot of them!

Putting it all in perspective

Rome is an important step in our company’s future and the beginning of our expansion into Europe. We’re enormously proud to connect our guests to these incredible places and be the carrier that gives them an unforgettable travel experience while exploring the places and the people they love.

At Alaska, we’re building something that lasts, and we’re just getting started. We’re grateful to have you with us on this journey. Andiamo – let’s go!

A taste of place, with purpose

Hawaiian Airlines is introducing Tide & Vine, a new Main Cabin wine offering inspired by the spirit of the Islands and the ocean that surrounds them. Available on board now, the Tide & Vine program includes a red blend, white blend and brut bubbles, each crafted to bring a sense of place to the inflight experience.

Beyond the glass, a portion of the proceeds from the Tide & Vine program support Mālama Maunalua, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting Oʻahu’s Maunalua Bay. The partnership builds on Hawaiian’s existing relationship with Mālama Maunalua through the airline’s Team Kōkua volunteer program, deepening a shared commitment to caring for the ocean that connects communities. In recognition of World Oceans Day, approximately 25 volunteers from Hawaiian and Tide & Vine joined Mālama Maunalua to help pull invasive algae from the nearshore waters of Maunalua Bay. Volunteers extracted more than 260 pounds of gorilla ogo, prickly seaweed and leather mudweed. Over the past 17 years, Mālama Maunalua’s “Great Huki Project” has removed 4 million pounds of these invasive species from 27 acres of the bay.
