Coming Full Circle: Welcoming Chef Mark Pomaski of Moon & Turtle to Hawaiian’s Featured Chef Series

CHEFMARK

"Simple, comforting and hearty." That's how Chef Mark Pomaski of Hilo's Moon & Turtle describes the meals for his newest collaboration with Hawaiian Airlines. His menu creations debuted this month to First Class guests on flights from Hawaiʻi to the continental U.S. as part of the carrier’s acclaimed Featured Chef Series in-flight culinary program.

CHEFMARKP0812240011

"I wanted to create something familiar and comforting, so I pulled from homestyle dishes that I make for my staff and family," shares Pomaski. "I've been in a phase where I'm really into Chinese-style steamed dishes, so I created a steamed chicken dish. I marinate chicken and steam it over a chicken broth, and everything that cooks off the chicken drips into the broth and that's what we use to cook the rice. It's a very classic meal that's super flavorful, but also healthy."

Pomaski's dishes are centered around Hawai‘i-Pacific flavors, which tend to be saltier. Native Hawaiians often used salt to preserve fish, meats, and other foods for storage and ocean voyages. At high altitudes, where taste bud sensitivity can be significantly reduced, these umami-rich flavors truly shine.

The partnership with Hawaiian is a full-circle moment for Pomaski. Growing up in Hilo on the east side of Hawai‘i Island, stepping onboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight meant the start of an adventure for him. When he became a corporate chef with James Beard Award-winning restaurateur Chef Roy Yamaguchi, he traveled on Hawaiian’s Neighbor Island flights every week to commute to and from work on Oʻahu.

"I'd read Hana Hou! [in-flight magazine] on those flights and there was an article titled, 'The Moon and The Turtle.' The concept was that the moon is very high, and the turtle is very low, and in the world of sushi, you have the otoro – the elevated and expensive – and you have things like saba, which is very humble, very every day. But they exist together. And it just seemed so perfect for the [restaurant] space we were trying to create,” explained Pomaski.

CHEFMARKP0812240126

In 2013, Pomaski opened Moon and Turtle with his wife, Soni, and his brother, Tedd. They've garnered local and national attention, including a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist placing for Best Chef Northwest and Pacific.

"One word that describes my cooking is heartfelt. My parents cooked for me. To this day, they still cook for me. I grew up eating homecooked food, and it is an expression of love, and that's what I always keep in mind when cooking for our guests," Pomaski reflected.

Hawaiian Airlines’ guests traveling to the continental U.S. can indulge in Chef Mark Pomaski’s new menu, which includes:

Braised Pork Belly with Pesto and Tomato Wrap and Pearl Caprese Salad with Tomatoes, Frisee and a Creamy Basil Dressing and Balsamic Reduction

"It's our version of a BLT with pork belly, pesto arugula and sun-dried tomatoes. Everyone loves pork belly!"

_10A4380

Garlic Mushroom and Vegetable Yakisoba (Fried Noodles) with Cucumber Kim Chee

"I wanted people to be excited to choose the vegetarian option. It's also one of my wife's favorite dishes. Buttery stir fried noodles with garlic and vegetables."

_10A4401

Steamed Chicken with Oyster Sauce Eggplant, Chicken Broth Rice and Smoked Mushroom Dip

"Every New Year's, we go to our friend's house, and they make this amazing clam dip, so I decided to substitute smoked mushrooms for the clams."

_10A4338

Baked Okinawan Potato Gnocchi with Roasted Vegetable Ratatouille

A Journey with Purpose: 5Qs with Daniel Chun and the Thinking Behind Huakaʻi by Hawaiian

HuakaiByHawaiian-Badge-FIll-4C-Gradient_mid

It’s been a month since the launch of Hawaiian Airlines' Huakaʻi by Hawaiian® program, an exclusive travel membership for kama‘āina (Hawai‘i residents). The free program has been received with open arms by the more than 100,000 HawaiianMiles members across the state who have signed up for it.

_S0A2500

Huaka‘i members enjoy a free checked bag – inclusive of surfboards, golf bags and other sports equipment – on Neighbor Island flights, one Neighbor Island travel discount per quarter (10% for all members, and 20% for Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® cardmembers) and the inside scoop on network-wide deals.

Huakaʻi members will receive their first discount code tomorrow, Dec. 18, for travel starting Jan. 8 and beyond. Beginning on March 1 of next year, discounts – which can be applied to one-way or roundtrip tickets in Coach and First Class – will be emailed on the first day of the month before each new quarter.

Daniel Chun, regional vice president of Hawai‘i for Alaska Airlines, shares his insight about the vision for the program.

240520_HNL_Daniel_Chun_17 1

What was the process behind coming up with the benefits of Huakaʻi by Hawaiian?

As a combined airline, we wanted a purposeful travel program that met the needs of kama‘āina, who rely on Neighbor Island flights to connect with family, community and other resources. Our goal was to launch this offering as soon as possible following the completion of our merger to deliver immediate benefits to our local guests.

Our thoughtful approach began with brainstorming a long list of ideas and gathering feedback from a broad range of residents statewide. We conducted consumer surveys, studied travel behaviors, and engaged our Hawai‘i Community Advisory Board (HICAB), a group of 16 leaders throughout the Hawaiian Islands who provide key input to ensure local needs inform our business and service.

HICAB ALASKA Group

Members of the Hawaiʻi Community Advisory Board

This research identified focal points for improving the kama‘āina Neighbor Island travel experience, with affordability and baggage allowances being the most notable takeaways. Huakaʻi by Hawaiian prioritizes and addresses those concerns for our kama‘āina.

Alaska Airlines offers a similar program to Alaska residents. How has that program been utilized over the years and how did its success influence the development of Huakaʻi?

C49-logo-02 002

Communities in Alaska and Hawai‘i are uniquely reliant on air travel and have relied on Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines to stay connected to family and friends, essential services and supplies, medical care and more. In October 2011, Alaska Airlines launched Club 49® – a nod to the 49th state – exclusively to residents who also benefit from free checked bags and travel discounts when traveling within Alaska.

Like Huaka‘i by Hawaiian, Club 49 has made travel more accessible for Alaskans, and nearly every Alaska Mileage Plan member residing in the state is a member. Club 49’s success and popularity gave us a high degree of confidence in the positive role Huaka‘i by Hawaiian could play and how it would be received by kama‘āina.

Why launch a resident program like this?

As Hawai‘i’s hometown carrier for 95 years and counting, Hawaiian Airlines has played an indispensable role in serving communities throughout the Islands. As I noted previously, Alaska Airlines has played a similar role for the state of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest for 92 years. So, this program demonstrates our combined company’s expanded commitment to Hawai‘i and the responsibility Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines now share in connecting the Islands to the world.

KAUAI_HA_NMG_Jhook_0022

The word “Huaka‘i" means a journey with purpose, and we know that our Neighbor Island flights are more than an A-to-B service; they reunite families, take people to doctor’s appointments, carry critical cargo, support local entrepreneurs, get folks to and from work and so much more. This program is foundational in keeping vital air transportation accessible, bridging our island communities and stimulating the local economy.

Huaka‘i by Hawaiian is our expression of gratitude and our way to extend a warm mahalo to kama‘āina for their loyalty and continued support of Hawaiian Airlines.

_S0A3455

Do you expect Huaka‘i by Hawaiian to evolve? How will you gather feedback as you further the program’s development?

Like every element of our business and the guest experience, we always want to know how we’re doing and what could make our service even better. We will actively solicit feedback in post-flight surveys, interact with our guests through our social channels and continue engagement with key local stakeholders, including our HICAB.

Our North Star with Huaka‘i by Hawaiian is to provide travel benefits that are special and meaningful for Hawai‘i residents – but also sustainable for our combined airline’s long-term success.

HICAB leaders played a significant role in this program. How will that group be involved as more improvements are considered and implemented?

HICAB has played and will continue to play a tremendous role in our combined companyʻs future. Shortly after we announced the combination of Hawaiian and Alaska late last year, we formed this important group to enable a stronger connection between both brands and Hawai‘i’s communities. We modeled this after the community advisory board that Alaska has had in the state of Alaska for the past 40 years to help us remain deeply connected to communities that greatly depend on our service.

CAB_Meeting-9

Members of the Hawaiʻi Community Advisory Board and the Alaska Community Advisory Board

The HICAB meets quarterly to share insights into our local community’s needs and preferences to ensure that our local operations, services and initiatives resonate with Hawaiʻi residents. In the years ahead, they will support us and guide our decisions around Huaka‘i and other areas of our business.

Signing up to become a Huaka‘i by Hawaiian member is easy, and Hawai‘i residents only need a HawaiianMiles account with a Hawai‘i mailing address. To register and learn more about the benefits, visit www.HawaiianAirlines.com/Huakai

Alaska Air Group introduces “Alaska Accelerate,” its three-year strategic plan to deliver $1 billion in incremental profit following combination with Hawaiian Airlines

Alaska Air Group unveils Alaska Accelerate, its vision for the combined company, including how it will power commercial performance, achieve medium-term financial targets, and unlock significant value creation into the future.

Alaska Air Group launches new global gateway in Seattle with unveiling of nonstop routes on Hawaiian Airlines to Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon

S25-hero

SEATTLE — Alaska Air Group is celebrating another milestone in the combination of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines with the launch of Seattle as a new global gateway, connecting our guests to the world through a remarkable travel experience rooted in safety, care and performance. New nonstop service with Hawaiian Airlines widebody aircraft between Seattle and Tokyo Narita, Japan (NRT), and Seoul Incheon, South Korea (ICN) will begin in 2025, and an enhanced domestic network for the two airlines will launch this spring.

S25-hero

Daily nonstop flights between Seattle and Tokyo Narita start on May 12, 2025, offering guests an enticing option when traveling between the Pacific Northwest and Japan on Hawaiian's Airbus A330-200 aircraft. These flights, along with connections to other Asian destinations on oneworld Alliance partner Japan Airlines, can be purchased now at alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com. Nonstop service between Seattle and Seoul Incheon is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with fares available for purchase early next year, along with additional flight details.

Air Group’s Seattle hub is the largest on the West Coast of any carrier, serving 104 nonstop destinations across North America, allowing for convenient travel options and connections. Including Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon, the company plans to serve at least 12 nonstop global destinations with long-haul widebody aircraft from our Seattle gateway by 2030, with further specifics on where and when to be revealed later.

“We believe our guests will be as excited as we are about these new nonstop flights to Tokyo and Seoul – two of the world’s most dynamic cities. From our global gateway in Seattle, we can conveniently connect travelers from across our network as they head to Asia and beyond,” said Ben Minicucci, chief executive officer at Alaska Air Group. “Hawaiian’s spacious widebody aircraft, along with its excellent onboard service and amenities, will make for a terrific trip from one side of the Pacific Rim to the other.”

240729_HAAS_006

Our new widebody service between Seattle and Tokyo Narita enables us to right-size our capacity between Hawaiʻi and Japan, a market that has experienced a weaker leisure travel demand in the wake of the pandemic. As we reposition the aircraft on the Honolulu-Tokyo Narita route to Seattle, we will offer more flying options between Honolulu and Tokyo Haneda – one of two international airports in Japan’s capital – by increasing Hawaiian’s service from 12 to 14 flights a week. Hawaiian will also continue to offer nonstop service between Honolulu and both Osaka and Fukuoka for a total of 24 weekly roundtrips between Hawaiʻi and Japan.

We are also enhancing our newly combined domestic network with strategic changes to where, when and what type of aircraft we fly. Our primary goals are to improve performance, expand growth opportunities, and offer our guests increased choice, network connectivity and convenience. The adjustments begin to take effect in late March with our spring schedule and continue to roll out through the second quarter:

  • More choices for our guests flying between the West Coast and Hawaiʻi: We’re updating our departures to improve our time-of-day coverage. We will offer 20% more seats between Seattle and Honolulu, with three of our six daily nonstop flights from Seattle to Honolulu on widebody Hawaiian aircraft. This helps us accommodate an expected increase in passenger and cargo demand. In Portland, there will be three daily nonstops to Honolulu with convenient staggered departure times and a 25% increase in available seats. We’re also improving connectivity in San Diego – a growing West Coast gateway to Hawaiʻi for Air Group – with mid-morning and late afternoon departures to Maui instead of just morning departures, and newly timed mid-afternoon and redeye departures from Maui.

  • Improved connectivity for East Coast and Midwest flights to Hawai‘i: We will offer an adjusted flight schedule using our combined network to allow for flights from the East Coast and Midwest to connect more easily on the West Coast before heading to the Islands. In addition to the new redeye between Maui and San Diego, we are adding three more overnight flights from Hawaiʻi to the West Coast: Honolulu and Maui to Portland, and Honolulu to San Francisco. The redeye flights unlock new connections for our flyers across the continental U.S. and will boost the utilization of Hawaiian aircraft. Improved connectivity will open greater access to Hawai‘i for guests throughout our network and strengthen nonstop and one-stop access to destinations across North America for Hawai‘i residents.

  • Maximizing widebody flying: To accommodate additional guests, we will fly Hawaiian’s larger A330 aircraft on three flights between Honolulu and Seattle and move to one daily flight with an A330 between Honolulu and Sacramento. During the peak summer season in the state of Alaska, we will deploy Hawaiian A330 aircraft to fly between Seattle and Anchorage to take advantage of the aircraft’s higher seating and cargo capacity. Alaska and Hawaiian have complementary cargo networks, with cargo playing a crucial role in the communities they serve. Alaska will fly at least 18 daily roundtrips this summer between Seattle and Anchorage.

  • New nonstops between San Francisco and the Islands: We’re adding new nonstops on Alaska between San Francisco and both Kona on Hawai‘i Island and Līhu‘e on Kauaʻi. San Francisco-Kona service will be four times a week starting June 12, 2025, and San Francisco-Līhuʻe will be three times a week starting June 13, 2025. With these new flights, Alaska and Hawaiian will offer four daily nonstop flights to the four main Hawaiian Islands from San Francisco, one of our key West Coast hubs. The new flights are available for purchase now at alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com.

  • Adding more flying with the Hawaiian brand: To better utilize the fleet, we’ve increased the number of hours Hawaiian’s Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321 aircraft fly daily. This means more flying time for Hawaiian’s crews and more union jobs. The A321s will fly 25% more than they did before. This strategy mitigates the impact of delayed Boeing 737 deliveries while enabling us to expand our overall network reach.

Alaska and Hawaiian continue to work on obtaining a single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a process that is expected to be completed by October 2025. Each airline will operate separately until the certificate is issued. Even with the combination into one great airline, the company will keep the two brands our guests love so much.

Connecting our guests to the world

The company will begin offering new nonstop flights on A330 aircraft to key Asian leisure and business markets in 2025 – connecting Seattle to Tokyo Narita in Japan and Seoul Incheon in South Korea.

Daily nonstop Seattle-Tokyo Narita service starts in May 2025, offering guests an enticing nonstop option between the Pacific Northwest and Japan. Flights can be purchased now at alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com. Scaling our premium experience

Announced in July, Alaska will increase its premium seat mix on its Boeing narrowbody fleet to 29%, with plans to expand premium cabins on the widebody fleet being developed.

Alaska will continue to expand the Lounge program, building off the recently-opened, brand new Lounge in San Francisco. Planned Lounges in San Diego International Airport and Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport will join the portfolio, followed by a new international lounge in Seattle by 2027.

These investments will serve to sustain and improve an already industry-leading net promoter score for both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines – 20 points above the legacy carriers’ average.

Creating a valuable loyalty ecosystem

In addition to previously announced enhancements to the award-winning Mileage Plan, Alaska will launch a premium credit card built for the global traveler, including an innovative Global Companion Award Certificate, 3x miles on all eligible foreign and dining purchases, an even faster path to elite status and more. The premium credit card will be perfect for the guest looking to get the most out of the expanded Alaska Air Group network.

Interested guests can join an early-access list to receive an exclusive link to apply for the new premium credit card, which is expected to be available in summer 2025. Pre-register your interest at alaskaair.com/premium-card by Dec. 31, 2024, for an exclusive offer.

Growing cargo and diversifying revenue

Building on the decades-long expertise of serving communities reliant on air travel and freight, the combined network and widebody fleet is poised to double in revenue over the next few years. The expanded cargo organization is led by industry veterans and is estimated to unlock margins that are two to three times the system average.

As Asia represents 22% of the total global air cargo market, the new passenger service between the continental United States and Japan and South Korea are the first steps to directly connect Alaska’s Seattle flagship cargo hub to the world’s most lucrative cargo markets.

Full Year 2025 Outlook

Looking ahead, the company anticipates its synergy targets and commercial initiatives will allow for no dilution to adjusted pretax margin in 2025 compared to 2024. Further, it expects to grow

EPS by 30% and produce positive free cash flow, while investing in the fleet, balance sheet and shareholder returns.

Summary

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines also release combined spring/summer schedule with more choices and improved connectivity for guests flying between U.S. continent and Hawaiʻi

As the only West Coast-based airline, our expanded winter schedule is part of our ongoing commitment to expand service in the region and deliver a seamless and remarkable travel experience for our guests.

Alaska Air Group is celebrating another milestone in the combination of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines with the launch of Seattle as a new global gateway, connecting our guests to the world through a remarkable travel experience rooted in safety, care and performance. New nonstop service with Hawaiian Airlines widebody aircraft between Seattle and Tokyo Narita, Japan (NRT), and Seoul Incheon, South Korea (ICN) will begin in 2025, and an enhanced domestic network for the two airlines will launch this spring.

Daily nonstop flights between Seattle and Tokyo Narita start on May 12, 2025, offering guests an enticing option when traveling between the Pacific Northwest and Japan on Hawaiian’s Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

From our global gateway in Seattle, we can conveniently connect travelers from across our network as they head to Asia and beyond. Hawaiian’s spacious widebody aircraft, along with its excellent onboard service and amenities, will make for a terrific trip from one side of the Pacific Rim to the other.”

– Ben Minicucci

Chief Executive Officer at Alaska Air Group

Our new widebody service between Seattle and Tokyo Narita enables us to right-size our capacity between Hawaiʻi and Japan, a market that has experienced a weaker leisure travel demand in the wake of the pandemic. As we reposition the aircraft on the Honolulu-Tokyo Narita route to Seattle, we will offer more flying options between Honolulu and Tokyo Haneda – one of two international airports in Japan’s capital — by increasing Hawaiian’s service from 12 to 14 flights a week.

More choices for our guests flying between the West Coast and Hawaiʻi:

We’re updating our departures to improve our time-of-day coverage. We’re also improving connectivity in San Diego — a growing West Coast gateway to Hawaiʻi for Air Group – with mid-morning and late afternoon departures to Maui instead of just morning departures, and newly timed mid-afternoon and redeye departures from Maui.

Improved connectivity for East Coast and Midwest flights to Hawai‘i:

We will offer an adjusted flight schedule using our combined network to allow for flights from the East Coast and Midwest to connect more easily on the West Coast before heading to the Islands.

Maximizing widebody flying:

To accommodate additional guests, we will fly Hawaiian’s larger A330 aircraft on three flights between Honolulu and Seattle and move to one daily flight with an A330 between Honolulu and Sacramento.

New nonstops between San Francisco and the Islands:

We’re adding new nonstops on Alaska between San Francisco and both Kona on Hawai‘i Island and Līhu‘e on Kauaʻi.

Adding more flying with the Hawaiian brand:

To better utilize the fleet, we’ve increased the number of hours Hawaiian’s Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321 aircraft fly daily.

Marching Together to Commemorate One of Pearl Harbor’s Last Remaining Survivors

Marching-Together

While December is the hallmark of festivities and holiday cheer, it is also a month of commemoration for one of the United States' darkest days in its history: the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Ira “Ike” Schab, the last surviving sailor from the USS Dobbin and a U.S. Navy musician who was aboard the vessel the morning of the attack 83 years ago, helped his shipmates fight back by feeding ammunition into machine guns.

Schab was photographed with his son, also a Navy veteran, and the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Band and a U.S. Navy honor guard.

Last week, Hawaiian Airlines welcomed onboard the 104-year-old Schab and his family as they traveled to Honolulu from Portland to attend the annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day event and pay respects to his fellow shipmates and the more than 2,000 people who died in the attack. Crewmembers on Hawaiian’s Airbus A330 personally thanked Schab for his dedication and service to the United States and made in-flight announcements recognizing him.

Schab, photographed with the HA49 crew and his daughter, was welcomed warmly by crewmembers and guests onboard the flight.

HA49

HA49 arrived to a rare water cannon salute in honor one of Pearl Harborʻs last remaining survivors.

Upon arrival, John Kim, president of the Hawaiian Airlines Veteran Employee Network (HAVEN) employee group, greeted Schab and his family at their seats and escorted them to the gate. Waiting for him outside the jet bridge was the U.S. Navy honor guard and live music by the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band — the same ensemble he once played with as a tubist.

Schab’s presence drew a large crowd, with travelers pausing their journey to gather around and honor one of the country’s last remaining World War II heroes.

Kim escorted Schab off the aircraft and to the gate, where a crowd of servicemembers and civilians gathered to pay their respects.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet Band performed at the gate for Schab and his family.

“It was an honor to represent Hawaiian Airlines and our veteran employees in welcoming one of our nation’s oldest Pearl Harbor survivors, Ira ‘Ike’ Schab. For years, Ike didn't want to return to Hawaiʻi because the memories were too horrific for him to relive. Seeing Ike smile with others at the gate ceremony and on the aircraft is a true testament to his strength and resiliency,” Kim said.

“Ike’s attendance at the Pearl Harbor anniversary events is incredibly significant, and we are proud to have been his family’s carrier of choice in returning to Honolulu once again.”

On Saturday, as civilians and military communities around the country paused to observe the anniversary of the attack, thousands gathered in Waikīkī in the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Parade to memorialize the events of Dec. 7, 1941, that catapulted the United States into World War II and changed the country – and Hawaiʻi – forever.

In another first for the combined company, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines veteran employee groups proudly walked side by side in the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Parade, sharing their collective pride in honoring the military.

Kim, who helped bring the two groups together for the parade, added, “The coming together of HAVEN and Alaska’s Military, Veterans and Allies Business Resource Group (MVA BRG) feels refreshing and motivating to know we share the same North Star of creating a sense of community and belonging among our veteran employees.”
