These appointments place proven leaders at the helm of critical operational functions across Air Group’s airlines, reinforcing the company’s commitment to safety, care and operational excellence.

The leaders and their new roles, effective this month are:

      • Nathan Engel, who has been elected vice president of maintenance operations at Alaska Airlines

Nathan Engel, vice president of maintenance operations at Alaska Airlines

As Alaska’s vice president of maintenance operations, Engel will manage the long-term strategy and financial performance of the airline’s maintenance operations workgroup, leading a team of technicians and other maintenance professionals and overseeing safety and reliability efforts.

Engel’s 37-year career in the industry includes decades in maintenance and engineering leadership, with deep experience at Alaska and Horizon. For the last year, he has served as the vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon. Prior to Horizon, Engel served in executive maintenance and operations roles at both Alaska and Horizon, responsible for strategic and operational leadership for line, heavy and on-call maintenance, maintenance control and quality control. He also worked for Amazon and, most recently, for Hawaiian Airlines as senior manager of maintenance in Seattle. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

John Wiitala will serve in a newly-created role as vice president of technical operations, overseeing the airline’s engineering, quality systems and material management needs. The division of Engel and Wiitala’s roles aligns with industry best practice, with both leaders reporting to Berry.

      Nathan Engel

Nathan’s extensive knowledge will be critical as we continue work to integrate Alaska’s and Hawaiian’s processes. His expertise in commercial aviation maintenance and relentless focus on maintenance’s critical role in ensuring safety and reliability will be pivotal. In his expanded role as senior vice president of operations at Horizon Air, Zendejas will oversee flight operations, maintenance and engineering and station operations for Alaska Air Group’s wholly-owned regional carrier.

Zendejas is a 35-year industry veteran who spent 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. During his more than 20 years at Air Group, he has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility. Prior to joining Horizon in 2017, Zendejas served as Alaska Airlines’ Seattle base chief pilot, responsible for the day-to-day operations and performance of more than 1,000 pilots. He was promoted to Horizon vice president of flight operations in 2020.

As Horizon’s vice president of people, labor relations and inflight operations, Ruger will continue to set the long-term strategy of people and labor relations initiatives to support Horizon’s business objectives. In this newly created role, she will also be responsible for overseeing more than 600 flight attendants, leading the operational and financial performance of the workgroup.

Ruger’s career at Horizon Air began nearly 25 years ago as a flight attendant. Since then, she’s held roles with increasing responsibility in HR supporting airport operations, customer service, inflight and maintenance and engineering. Ruger also supported McGee Air Services as the managing director of human resources where she directed the core HR functions, scaling to support 2,000 employees within a five-year period of rapid growth and expansion. Most recently, Ruger served as the managing director of people and labor relations at Horizon Air.

      Carlos Zendejas

Baron Converse, vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air

Converse will succeed Engel as the vice president of maintenance and engineering at Horizon Air and will be responsible for the long-term strategy and daily operational execution of the regional carrier’s maintenance organization. Celebrating a more than 30-year career at the airline, Converse joined Horizon Air in 1994 as an airframe and powerplant technician. Prior to this promotion, he served as the managing director of maintenance operations and the director of line maintenance and planning.

      Carlos Zendejas

Horizon is in truly capable hands with these leaders. Carlos, Chéri and Baron are exceptional aviation professionals who understand the complexity of our regional operation while also providing steady and caring leadership to the more than 3,600 Horizon employees.”

This Veterans Day: A surprise reunion, a meaningful final flight and a hero’s welcome home

Honor flight image in front of military commemorative aircraft

      Summary

This Veterans Day, we’re recognizing recent meaningful moments of care and connection shared between our dedicated employees and our military and veteran community.

Whether they’re employees, guests or active-duty military members flying on assignment, we’re honored to call veterans and service members a part of our family and prioritize their care and comfort on every flight and in every interaction.

For the 30,000+ employees across Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air, serving military members is a deeply personal experience. Whether they’re employees, guests or active-duty military members flying on assignment, we’re honored to call veterans and service members a part of our family and prioritize their care and comfort on every flight and in every interaction.

This Veterans Day, join us in recognizing recent meaningful moments of care and connection shared between our dedicated employees and our military and veteran community.

      Image of veterans welcome

      A surprise reunion

This year alone, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, in partnership with the Honor Flight Network, will fly over 2,000 veterans and their families to Washington, D.C., for a once-in-a-lifetime memorial experience.

While all Honor Flights are special to us, some tug a little deeper at our hearts. For one of our pilots, Alaska Airlines First Officer Joan, it hit home personally: her Uncle Joe, an Army Vietnam veteran, was scheduled to be one of the veterans on an Honor Flight. When we learned this, we rearranged Joan’s schedule so she could pilot the flight and surprise her uncle (and you bet we caught the moment on video!).

      A meaningful final flight

Leslie, a Marine Corps veteran, loved routine and respected tradition. His occasional cocktail before dinner was always in the same glass, a vintage Alaska Airlines tumbler — a tribute to his favorite airline. For Leslie, flying with Alaska Airlines also meant flying with family: His wife was an Alaska flight attendant in the early years on Operation Magic Carpet, and his daughter-in-law Gaylene has built a 40-year career at Alaska.

He was known to show off his original Alaska Airlines “Gold Coast Travel” vintage-era mileage card in conversations, which he’d never bothered to replace and kept in his wallet. “He was pretty proud of his airline,” said Gaylene.

Photo caption: Leslie showing off his “Gold Coast Travel” mileage card, with daughter-in-law Gaylene, a 40-year Alaska Airlines employee

Photo of Leslie holding his mileage card

Leslie was a lot of things — Alaska Airlines fan, husband, father and grandpa — but he was, first and foremost, a Marine. Born in May 1925 in Redmond, Wash., he joined the United States Marine Corps in January 1944 and served in the World War II Pacific campaign at Majuro Atoll, loading ordnance on dive bombers. After coming home, he joined the Reserves at Sandpoint Naval Air Station, training recruits and earning his bachelor’s in forestry management at the University of Washington. He completed his service in 1951 as a Master Sergeant — the highest rank an enlisted service member can achieve.

In May 2016, Leslie participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with other veterans. When he died this summer, just shy of his 100th birthday, his family requested that his favorite airline transport him to his final resting place.  We gladly agreed.

Honor flight image in front of military commemorative aircraft

As Leslie’s final journey approached, teams across Alaska Airlines rallied to ensure every detail was covered through our Fallen Soldier Program. His remains were loaded onto Alaska’s ‘Honoring Those Who Serve’ aircraft on a flight from Houston to Seattle. Our pilots and flight attendants met his family members and provided a tribute announcement onboard. Upon arrival, active-duty Marines stood at attention at the gate to render a salute as the family deplaned.

Every detail and gesture was a testament to our company’s shared commitment to honoring the heroes who have touched our history.

“I cannot begin to tell you what this meant to our family. That the company did what they did to honor my father-in-law,” Gaylene said. “It was a sendoff worthy of a hero.”

A hero’s welcome home to Hawaiʻi

Fourteen Vietnam War veterans from Hawaiʻi returned home on Hawaiian Airlines after a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Washington, D.C., in early October. When they landed, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines employees gathered at the gate and made sure every veteran in the group received a proper hero’s welcome. The trip was completely free for the veterans and made possible through our partnership with the Honor Flight Network’s Lone Eagle program.

We are still operating more than 1,500 flights each day, and to date, 100% of guests impacted by these FAA-mandated cancellations for Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 8 have been rebooked on new flights to their destinations. If a guest has not received communication from Alaska or Hawaiian about their Friday or Saturday flight, it has not been impacted by the FAA mandate.

Our goal is to comply with the order while maintaining the highest possible schedule reliability. The specific routes affected may vary from day to day as we continue applying our approach of prioritizing high-frequency routes to minimize disruption for our guests. We remain fully committed to maintaining air service to every community we serve.

We expect to cancel roughly 36-40 flights each day through Sunday, Nov. 9. Guests will continue to receive communication and rebooking options from Alaska or Hawaiian if they have an impacted flight. A flexible travel policy remains in effect for guests looking to adjust their own travel. Details can be found at alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com.

We deeply appreciate our guests’ patience and understanding as we work to minimize disruptions caused by these cancellations. We are also sincerely grateful to the air traffic controllers and TSA and CBP officers who continue to ensure the safety and functioning of air travel despite not receiving pay. We strongly urge our federal leaders to reach an immediate resolution to end the shutdown.

We will continue to keep our guests informed of any further updates or schedule adjustments.

      Thursday, Nov. 6 – 1:15 p.m. Pacific Time

In light of ATC staffing shortages due to the ongoing government shutdown, the FAA has directed U.S. airlines to reduce flights at 40 domestic airports.  We have assessed our schedule and begun canceling a limited number of flights effective Friday, November 7. The FAA’s directive is expected to remain in place until further guidance is issued and the shutdown concludes. International flying is not expected to be impacted.

We are sorry for this unexpected disruption. We know that when guests book their travel with Alaska and Hawaiian, they are trusting us to get them to their destination safely, on time and with the care both our brands are known for. As we assessed the FAA’s directive and our schedule, we worked to ensure smaller and remote communities that are reliant upon air travel are protected. Most of our cancellations are on routes with a higher frequency of flights, allowing most guests to be reaccommodated with as little disruption as possible.

Guests whose flights are canceled will be reaccommodated on other flights as available or offered a full refund. Those whose flights are impacted will receive communication directly from Alaska and Hawaiian. We have also issued a flexible travel policy that allows guests to adjust their travel during this uncertain time. We encourage all guests to check the status of their flights on the Alaska or Hawaiian app or our websites alaskaair.com and hawaiianairlines.com to utilize self-service rebooking options.

We remain grateful to every air traffic controller and TSA or CBP officer who is working without pay to keep air travel functioning safely. We continue to strongly urge our federal leaders to reach an immediate resolution and end the shutdown.

Chasing the next swell? Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ new surfboard policy has you covered

Like clockwork, every fall and into the winter, storms in the North Pacific stir powerful ocean swells that generate world-class waves in Hawai’i and across California, two key regions in Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ combined network.

This year, as our traveling surfers plan their next adventure, they will enjoy not only unmatched connectivity between these two U.S. surfing meccas – and many popular international surfing destinations throughout our expanding global network – but also peace of mind when bringing along their most valued companion: surfboards.

      Surfer image

Our new surfboard policy – the most generous among premium U.S. airlines – allows guests flying on Alaska and Hawaiian aircraft to check multiple surfboards in a single bag measuring up to 10 feet, 5 inches (from nose to tail), and 50 pounds. For flights operated on our regional E175 aircraft, surfboard bags must not exceed nine feet, 7 inches.

We developed our new policy to accommodate all surfers: thrill-seekers tracking large seasonal surf and bringing big surfboards on strike missions to places like Tahiti and Mexico, families looking for year-round warm water and gentle waves to longboard (Costa Rica, anyone?), or guests venturing into the far reaches of our network to explore coastlines in Australia, American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Japan and New Zealand.

      Surfer image

We also treat surfboards as standard checked baggage – with no special item fees – and offer bag allowances anywhere we fly for guests booking with our branded credit cards and earning points in our new Atmos Rewards loyalty program. In recognition of surfing’s cultural significance in Hawai‘i, we provide one free checked bag, inclusive of surfboards, for residents traveling interisland through our Huaka‘i by Hawaiian program.

We look forward to seeing you onboard – and in the water!

MEDIA ADVISORY: Alaska Airlines provides update on IT systems and path to resiliency

      Alaska-AirGroup-Featured

SEATTLE – Alaska Airlines today announced that it has engaged a new partner, Accenture, a leading global information technology and management consulting firm, to work with Alaska in conducting a comprehensive audit of its technology systems as part of the airline’s ongoing commitment to build a more resilient, reliable, and guest-centered operation.

Following recent IT challenges, Alaska Air Group President and CEO Ben Minicucci outlined the steps being taken to strengthen the company’s infrastructure and ensure long-term system reliability. The collaboration with Accenture will include a top-to-bottom review of Alaska’s technology environment — assessing standards, processes, and overall system health — with actionable recommendations to be implemented quickly.

Since 2019, Alaska has increased investments in IT infrastructure by nearly 80% — investing in redundant data centers and moving many guest-facing systems to the cloud. This initiative marks a key milestone in Alaska Airlines’ broader path to resiliency, as the company continues to invest in technology that supports operational excellence and a world-class guest experience.

Additionally, Alaska Air Group will provide updated guidance for the fourth quarter in early December, once the full financial impact of the recent IT disruptions is understood.

Alaska Airlines will continue to provide regular updates on its progress as part of its ongoing commitment to transparency.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines reach major integration milestone: a single operating certificate

      dual tail image

      Summary

Alaska Airlines has received a single operating certificate (SOC) from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate alongside Hawaiian Airlines as two separate brands.

Guests will continue to enjoy the distinct Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines brands, brought to life by our remarkable employees, along with the reach of our combined global network, and the industry-leading benefits of our Atmos™ Rewards loyalty program.

Several Honolulu-based leadership positions formally take effect today to support the Hawaiian Airlines brand and the combined organization’s operations to, from and within Hawai‘i.

Alaska Airlines today received a single operating certificate (SOC) from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate alongside Hawaiian Airlines as two separate brands. This significant milestone a FAA regulatory requirement achieved just over a year after Alaska and Hawaiian combined marks the successful integration of training, policies, procedures and manuals across both airlines.

Here’s what our guests need to know:

      • While Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are now operating under a single call sign (AS) which our pilots and dispatchers use behind the scenes to communicate with air traffic control guests will continue to enjoy our distinct Alaska and Hawaiian brand experiences, brought to life by our remarkable employees, along with the reach of our expanding joint global network, and the industry-leading benefits of our Atmos™ Rewards loyalty program.
      • There is one visible change for our guests: while Hawaiian Airlines flights will show the HA designator, new flight numbers may be assigned to avoid duplication between our brands. Where practical, we attempted to maintain similar flight numbers, but in many cases, we had to assign completely new flight numbers. If you are a frequent Hawaiian Airlines flyer who has memorized a regular or favorite flight, please take note.
      • A SOC paves the way for other, ongoing integration initiatives, including combining scheduling and passenger service systems to improve the experience of our guests traveling across both brands, and integrating our flight crew, airport and maintenance teams under joint collective bargaining agreements.
      • Next spring, guests can look forward to an even more streamlined travel experience when Alaska and Hawaiian move to a single passenger service system, or PSS. A PSS is the main technology powering the systems that our guests on Alaska and Hawaiian will interact with when planning their trips, booking tickets and on the day of travel. Once we transition to a single PSS in April, all flights will carry the AS code, but travelers will continue to be able to view and book Hawaiian Airlines flights and experience the distinct Hawaiian Airlines brand and the ho‘okipa (hospitality) of our people throughout their journey. Hawaiian flights will be clearly branded across our digital channels with an image of our Pualani aircraft tail.

Congratulations to everyone at Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines for getting us to a single operating certificate. This was a year-long, multi-phase effort involving multiple departments and thousands of hours of work. We also appreciate the FAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation for their guidance and support as we carefully reviewed and harmonized our processes with a shared focus on safety. This is an important step in our journey as a combined organization, and I’m excited about our future together.”

      Ben Minicucci

President and CEO, Alaska Air Group

With a single operating certificate, several Honolulu-based leadership positions formally take effect today to support the Hawaiian Airlines brand and the combined organization’s operations to, from and within Hawai‘i. Diana Birkett Rakow, executive vice president of public affairs and sustainability at Alaska Airlines, becomes CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, succeeding Joe Sprague, who is retiring after a distinguished career with Alaska Air Group. Jim Landers, Hawaiian Airlines senior vice president for technical operations, assumes the role of head of Hawai‘i operations, while Shelly Parker, Horizon Air’s vice president of station operations and inflight, becomes head of Hawai‘i guest operations. They will serve alongside other members of the Honolulu leadership team.

      • We’ll fly five new nonstop routes next spring: Dallas-Fort Worth, Oakland, Raleigh-Durham, Santa Barbara and Tulsa.
      • With these additions, Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines will serve the top 15 most popular markets nonstop from San Diego and fly to 49 nonstop destinations.
      • Travelers in Santa Barbara can take advantage of a one-stop connection in San Diego before continuing to other cities, such as Boston and Honolulu.
      • Our route between San Diego and Santa Rosa-Sonoma will now be served three times daily, offering more time-of-day options than other airlines.

      Portland

We’ve added more flights to major cities from the Rose City, building off a successful summer of growth at PDX.

      • We’ll begin service from Portland to four new destinations in May: Baltimore, Idaho Falls, Philadelphia and St. Louis.
      • With those newly added routes, we’ll serve 62 nonstop destinations from Portland.
      • We’ve also added a second flight to Newark, increased our Portland-Līhu‘e (Kaua‘i) service to year-round and upped our daily flights to Santa Rosa-Sonoma to three.

      Hawai‘i

Our commitment to Hawai‘i remains strong. We serve more airports from California to Hawai‘i than any other airline.

      • We’ve added a new summer seasonal flight between Honolulu and Hollywood Burbank Airport – the first time the two airports will be connected in more than 20 years.
      • We’ve increased the number of flights from a pair of our West Coast gateways starting in the spring: Los Angeles-Kahului (Maui) goes to two daily nonstops with an additional seasonal flight, and San Francisco-Kona (Hawai‘i Island) and San Francisco-Līhu‘e (Kaua‘i) will increase in June to daily nonstops, joining flights that already operate several times a week.
      • By early summer, we’ll fly daily to all four Hawaiian Islands from San Francisco, like we do from Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego and Seattle.

      Santa Rosa-Sonoma

If you know wine, you know Santa Rosa-Sonoma is the front door to California Wine Country.

      • We are the airport’s #1 carrier, offering twice as many destinations from there compared to any other airline.
      • Along with the additional flights to Portland and San Diego, we’ve also added a new intra-California flight between Santa Rosa-Sonoma and Ontario, east of Los Angeles.
      • We’ll now serve six cities in California from Santa Rosa-Sonoma, including our new seasonal service to Palm Springs that launches on Oct. 26.
