From Hawaiʻi to the world: Two brothers soaring together at Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines

For brothers Kaʻimi and Kekumu “Kumu” N., aviation is more than a career — it’s a shared journey that has connected them across skies, time zones and two beloved brands they proudly represent.

Kaʻimi, a Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant, first fell in love with the idea of flying while growing up in Hawaiʻi and watching aircraft of all types traveling to, from and within the Hawaiian Islands. As a child, he found inspiration in a friend’s sister, a flight attendant whose travels sparked his dream to explore beyond the Islands’ shores. After college, Kaʻimi followed that dream and joined Hawaiian in 2012.

“Growing up, the two main airlines serving the Islands were Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines, but I always wanted to work for Hawaiian. This job has allowed me to stay connected to my Hawaiʻi roots while still being able to explore the world,” he said.

Kaimi

For Kumu, a Boeing 737 First Officer, the goal was always to work from the flight deck. After spending years at regional carriers in the continental U.S. building flight time and experience, he accepted an offer from Alaska in 2015.

“I kind of followed Kaʻimi to the major airlines,” Kumu said of his older brother, whose path helped shape his own. “I remember my first flight was Seattle to Sacramento. It was a beautiful summer day and a nice, easy first trip. Now, anytime I’m up at altitude, I can’t help but think about how cool this job is.”

ASHA

Despite their different roles, routes and schedules at Alaska and Hawaiian, with Kaʻimi in the cabin and Kumu in the flight deck, their connection has only grown stronger. When they’re both in Hawaiʻi, they’re often together reconnecting with family and enjoying life on island time. They also share a passion for traveling for food and making new memories in destinations around the globe, from Rome and London to Japan and across the U.S.

When asked about each other’s strengths, their answers reflected mutual appreciation and respect.

“Kumu’s skill set is what makes him a pilot that everyone loves and can rely on, being a big asset for the airline. That can’t be overlooked,” Kaʻimi said. “Being able to share stories and experiences we’ve had on the job has been incredible. We can relate to each other more because we are in the same industry.”

“Out of all six siblings, we actually fought the most growing up, but as we got older, we figured it out. I know my brother is always there for me and willing to listen,” Kumu added. “Kaʻimi is a great team member and loves what he does. Everybody loves to work with him.”

As they each pursue their own passions at the combined company, their paths occasionally cross in unexpected ways. “A few months ago, I was scheduled to work Hawaiian’s last Seattle to Honolulu flight of the evening. Kumu had just wrapped up his final flight of the day and raced over to catch his commuter flight back home to Hawaiʻi. It just so happened that Kumu ended up on my flight that night, and that last-minute coincidence gave us the rare chance to fly home together,” Kaʻimi shared.

ASHA

From ramen in Japan to global cuisine in Seattle, the brothers cherish the experiences their careers have brought them — experiences that have only strengthened their bond. “No matter where in the world Kumu or I are flying, we’ll always be there for each other, cheering one another on,” Kaʻimi said.

In addition, a range of partner offers makes it easier to earn points through everyday travel and dining — reinforcing that Atmos Rewards extends well beyond the flight itself.

While the specific offers will change month to month, the idea stays the same: delivering a steady stream of value, inspiration and access — tailored to how members travel and engage.

Building a more rewarding member experience

Atmos Members Day is part of a broader effort to create a more guest‑centric, flexible loyalty program built on choice – one that meets members where they are and gives them more ways to engage.

By bringing together global flight opportunities, premium experiences and partner benefits into one monthly touchpoint, we’re making it easier for members to discover what’s possible with their points and to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise. Most importantly, this new format creates an ongoing connection with members, ensuring they stay informed, inspired and rewarded — not just once in a while, but every month.

Atmos members can ensure they get each edition of Members Day to their inbox by logging into their account and adjusting their profile settings. Under ‘Communications’, ensure that ‘Monthly points statement and news’ is checked.

Alaska Airlines is set to welcome guests to its newest Lounge at Portland International Airport (PDX) when it officially opens on June 4, underscoring its continued investment in premium travel and one of the carrier’s key West Coast hubs.

After more than two years of construction, the approximately 14,000-square-foot Lounge will welcome guests with a warm, thoughtfully designed Pacific Northwest aesthetic, featuring an inviting fireplace and a striking wooden Mt. Alaska is the largest carrier serving Portland, operating more flights than any other airline, including more than 100 daily departures. Portland is a critical hub in Alaska and Hawaiian’s network with expanding service to over 60 destinations across North America and beyond. This summer, Alaska will launch year-round service to Everett/Paine Field (PAE) and Pasco–Tri-Cities (PSC), along with seasonal service to Jackson Hole (JAC). The Lounge, which will be located in Seattle – home to the airline’s main hub – will be the largest in its network and among the largest airline lounges in the country.

The airline is also designing its first Lounge in San Diego (SAN), along with a new, expanded Lounge in Honolulu (HNL), both slated for early 2028.

Alaska Airlines Lounge members can access eight premium lounges across Alaska and Hawaiian’s network, including its largest lounge in Seattle and additional locations at its hubs in Anchorage (ANC), Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).

Alaska Airlines brings spirit of friendship and adventure to the skies with new ‘Toy Story 5’ livery on Horizon Air

Hero image

Summary

Horizon Air, the regional carrier of Alaska Airlines, is bringing the next chapter of Disney and Pixar’s iconic “Toy Story” franchise to the skies with a new livery inspired by the film’s latest adventure.

The special livery commemorates Horizon’s upcoming 45th anniversary of providing safe, caring service and reminds guests of all ages that adventure, imagination and a little play are always ready for takeoff.

For over 30 years, audiences around the world have followed the beloved toy crew of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, who taught generations that friendship, magic and imagination never go out of style. Now, as Disney and Pixar’s highly anticipated “Toy Story 5” prepares to soar into theaters June 19, Horizon Air, the regional carrier of Alaska Airlines, is bringing the next chapter of the iconic franchise to the skies with a new livery inspired by the film’s latest adventure.

Toy Story 5 full plane shot

The Embraer 175 (N659QX) showcases original fan favorites Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, alongside new “Toy Story 5” tech toy characters, including Lilypad, Snappy, Atlas and Smarty Pants. Adding to the fun, the livery features floating clouds throughout the fuselage and playful, Toy Story-inspired callouts like “Saddle Up, It’s Takeoff Time!” and “Ready for Takeoff, Partner.” Forky and Karen Beverly also make surprise appearances on the winglets, extending the spirit of “Toy Story” as it reaches for the sky from every angle of the aircraft.

Alaska unveiled Horizon’s new, larger-than-life livery for guests and employees earlier today at Portland International Airport. Named “To 45 and Beyond”, a nod to Buzz Lightyear’s famous interstellar mantra, the special Toy Story aircraft also commemorates Horizon’s upcoming 45th anniversary of providing safe, caring service across Alaska Airlines’ regional network and reminds guests of all ages that adventure, imagination and a little play are always ready for takeoff.

I couldn’t think of a more special way to celebrate Horizon’s history with our guests than to bring out the kid in all of us. Forty-five years of service is a meaningful milestone, and I couldn’t be prouder of our people who, each and every day, put their best foot forward to deliver the industry’s best and most caring travel experience.”

Horizon’s “To 45 and Beyond” joins Alaska’s nine other Disney-themed aircraft, including “Friendship and Beyond at the Disneyland® Resort,” its first “Toy Story” livery, “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Flyer,” “Mickey’s Toontown Express” and the “Star Wars Transport to the Disneyland Resort,” recently updated with Mandalorian and Anzellan characters in celebration of Disney’s newest movie, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” now playing in theaters.

About Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5”

The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” and this time it’s Toy meets Tech. Woody (voice of Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (voice of Tim Allen), Jessie (voice of Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad (voice of Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same? “Toy Story 5” is directed by Academy Award® winner Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris, produced by Lindsey Collins, p.g.a., and written by Stanton and Harris. Hawaiian Airlines elevates onboard service with pre-order dining by celebrated Hawai‘i chefs, fresh fare across all cabins and complimentary local snacks

Chef Sheldon Header

Summary

New First Class and Main Cabin pre-order dining delivers greater choice and better quality for guests

James Beard Award finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon brings Hawaiʻi’s flavors onboard with a new, locally inspired Main Cabin menu

Huakaʻi by Hawaiian members to enjoy two free meals as a mahalo for their loyalty

New local snack partners elevate complimentary onboard offerings with island-made favorites

As a continuation of Hawaiian Airlines’ signature onboard hospitality, the airline is redefining island-inspired dining in the Main Cabin with a new onboard service program that delivers greater choice, improved quality and a deeper connection to the flavors of Hawai‘i.

Starting July 1, guests in Main Cabin on most flights between Hawai‘i and the U.S. continent will enjoy pre-ordered meals from a fresh, chef-curated menu available for purchase. Hawaiian, which developed the program with Maui-based, James Beard Award finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon, is also introducing new locally made products and enhanced service elements – delivering a richer taste of Hawai‘i and a service experience grounded in Hawaiian’s signature Mea Hoʻokipa hospitality.

At Hawaiian Airlines, food has always been a core expression of our Hawaiian hospitality — our special way of welcoming guests onboard and inviting them into our island home. We designed our new Main Cabin meal program based on guest preference for more control and choice, while allowing us to deliver food that better reflects the richness of Hawaiʻi’s culinary traditions. By moving to a pre-order model, we’re expanding beyond a single standard meal to offer a broader menu that reflects how our guests want to dine today.”

Alisa Onishi

Managing Director of Hawai‘i Marketing, Hawaiian Airlines

Chef-driven menu rooted in Hawai‘i

The heart of Hawaiian’s new dining program comes from its longstanding partnership with Chef Simeon, a nationally recognized restaurateur. Known for his beloved Maui restaurants, Tin Roof and Tiffany’s, Simeon brings deep culinary expertise and a passion for celebrating Hawai‘i’s diverse food culture.

His menu features elevated takes on local favorites and comfort foods, including dishes such as crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles, barbecue teriyaki chicken bento and corned beef hash with eggs. Many items highlight signature flavors from Simeon’s restaurants, including his popular sauces, K mayo, teriyaki and banana bread syrup, as well as his popular crispy topping made from rice crackers and furikake.

For me, food is about sharing where you’re from and the people who shaped you. This menu is inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Hawai‘i — comforting, familiar and full of heart. I’m excited to bring those dishes onboard so guests can experience a true taste of home, wherever they’re headed.”

Chef Sheldon Simeon

Hawaiian Airlines Featured Chef

Menu offerings deliver an experience that is both familiar and distinctly Hawaiian — grounded in culture and prepared with fresh local ingredients made no more than 12 hours before each flight.

“Chef Sheldon embodies the heart and soul of Hawai‘i’s culinary culture,” Onishi added. “His approach to food is rooted in storytelling, community and a deep sense of place, which aligns perfectly with how we think about hospitality at Hawaiian Airlines — brought to life every day by our crews, who deliver exceptional service.”

In March, Hawaiian welcomed Chef Dell Valdez, the Hawaiʻi-born culinary leader behind Vein in Kakaʻako on O‘ahu, as well as Dell’s Kitchen & Bakery and Mio PASTALOGY, as the carrier’s new Executive Chef. With Valdez overseeing Hawaiian’s international Business Class and domestic First Class menus and Simeon designing the Main Cabin meal program, Hawaiian is offering a thoughtfully curated dining experience to guests in every cabin.

More choice, better quality for guests

Rooted in Hawaiʻi and shaped by guest feedback, Hawaiian’s onboard service evolution reflects its continued commitment to offering a more unified, elevated experience across every cabin while staying true to the brand’s signature hospitality.

Already offered in First Class, the pre-order model puts guests in control of their onboard dining experience throughout the cabin, with First Class guests now benefiting from an expanded selection of menu options. Through the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app or website, travelers can select meals up to two weeks in advance (and as close to 20 hours before departure), choosing options that best fit their tastes, preferences and dietary needs — including plant-based and gluten-free selections.

The Main Cabin program will launch July 1 with a curated set of initial offerings, with plans to expand the menu this Fall. Throughout the year, Hawaiian and Simeon will introduce new dishes and rotate items, ensuring the menu remains fresh, relevant and reflective of seasonal ingredients and evolving guest preferences.

Hawaiian hospitality remains at the core with new onboard partners

Hawaiian’s award-winning Mea Hoʻokipa hospitality — loved by guests — remains central to the inflight experience. Complimentary onboard touches will continue, including a welcome beverage, snacks by new local partners Anahola Granola and Diamond Bakery and a mahalo sweet treat from Hawaiian Host Chocolates or Honolulu Cookie Company served before arrival.

In addition to complimentary alcohol for guests seated in Premium Class, Hawaiian will introduce new complimentary onboard bites for guests seated in Premium Class: Kauaʻi-based Anahola Granola’s Tropical Granola Bar, which features island favorites, papaya and pineapple, paired with honey-roasted oats. Main Cabin guests will enjoy Hawaiian shortbread macadamia nut cookies by Diamond Bakery, made in Hawai‘i and crafted with rich, indulgent flavors served in the morning, and Hawaiian Maui onion kettle chips served in the afternoon.

Designed with sustainability in mind

The new program also advances Hawaiian’s commitment to caring for the ‘āina (land). By aligning meal production with actual guest demand, the airline is reducing unnecessary food and packaging waste.

Most meal packaging is compostable or recyclable, including fiber-based containers and materials that significantly reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

Huakaʻi by Hawaiian members enjoy first two meals on us

Hawai‘i residents who are Huakaʻi by Hawaiian members, or who become members by June 24, will enjoy a special, one-time offer to experience the new menu as part of the program launch. As a thank you for their continued loyalty, starting July 1, Huakaʻi members who make a meal selection for an upcoming trip will automatically receive the first two items free of charge.

“We’re excited to mahalo our Huaka‘i members – all of whom are kamaʻāina and among our most loyal guests by inviting them to taste our new menu and be part of this exciting chapter of onboard dining with us,” said Onishi.

This evolution reflects something larger: Hawaiian’s continued commitment to Hawaiʻi and to its guests. The airline continues to share local flavors, support local partners and deliver hospitality with authenticity and care, while investing in modernized spaces, upgraded technology, refreshed Airbus A330 aircraft interiors and expanded community and sustainability efforts that will shape the future of the guest experience.

Here’s what to know before departure to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip abroad.

Check entry requirements and security wait times before traveling

Before booking a trip, be sure to check passport expiration dates (many countries require at least six months of validity beyond the return date).

Guests are responsible for meeting country-specific entry requirements, which can include visas, proof of citizenship and more. Consider using the U.S. Department of State’s International Travel Checklist for a snapshot of what documents are required to enter different countries.

Before the day of travel, guests should check their departure airport’s website for recommended arrival times and current security wait information. They can also reference Alaska’s airport guides for additional general information.

At the airport, international documents and information will need to be verified, so plan to arrive early. Guests can also use the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app to pre-verify international travel documents, but must still bring them to the airport.

Take advantage of Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free travel service that sends timely alerts and helps the embassy reach travelers in an emergency. STEP also keeps travelers informed about safety conditions, weather events and any sudden changes to entry rules.

Alaska Airlines advances global expansion with launch of new European routes and landmark lounge investment

Tower Bridge, London. Alaska Airlines travel images of London, England, in May 2026.

Summary

Alaska Airlines begins service to London today, marking a major milestone in the carrier’s international expansion, with service to Reykjavík to follow on May 28, just weeks after launching nonstop service to Rome.

Opening in late 2027, Alaska’s landmark lounge at SeattleTacoma International Airport will be among the largest in the country, delivering a world-class, twolevel experience designed for international growth and anchoring a multimilliondollar investment across the airline’s expanding lounge portfolio.

Alaska Airlines today launched daily nonstop service between Seattle and London Heathrow, reinforcing its position as the fourth largest global airline in the U.S. and strengthening its international network. The year-round service marks Alaska’s second European destination introduced this year and begins just ahead of the busy summer travel season. Last month, the airline launched its first-ever transatlantic route to Rome, and on May 28, it will begin nonstop service to Reykjavík, Iceland.

London

As we connect the West Coast to Europe in new ways, our focus is on delivering a meaningful experience that feels distinctly Alaska – warm, thoughtful and elevated at every touchpoint. For our guests in the U.S., we’re opening more convenient access to Europe with the airline they know and love, and for our guests in Europe and beyond, we’re bringing our signature West Coast hospitality to every step of the journey, reflecting the comfort and care we’re known for.”

Andrew Harrison

Chief Commercial Officer, Alaska Airlines

Alaska’s daily service will operate out of London Heathrow’s Terminal 3, offering U.S.-based guests a seamless way to reach one of the world’s most iconic cities or enjoy convenient connections to additional destinations across Europe and beyond on oneworld member and partner airlines. The new route also opens the door for UK travelers to explore the Pacific Northwest and connect beyond Seattle through Alaska Airlines’ extensive West Coast network, including the Hawaiian Islands.

When traveling internationally, Alaska Lounge+ members enjoy access to select partner lounges worldwide, including the Admirals Club at London Heathrow, while guests in Alaska’s international business class Suites and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members can access partner lounges regardless of cabin.

Every new route launched from Heathrow gives passengers and businesses more choice and stronger connections to the world. Alaska Airlines’ new service to Seattle further strengthens our transatlantic network, opening up opportunities for travel and trade between the UK and the U.S. West Coast. Working closely with airline partners like Alaska is how we deliver the connectivity passengers and businesses want – and keep the UK competitive globally.”

Ross Baker

Connecting these two cities with vibrant business communities will go beyond tech and finance workers. The cargo capacity enabled by this route will provide businesses in North America and the UK increased opportunities to move their goods across Alaska’s extensive network. Whether it’s seafood from Alaska and Hawaii or Northwest hops, the 787’s capacity and Alaska Air Cargo’s reputation for customer service will help strengthen the connection across the pond.

On May 28, Alaska will launch nonstop, seasonal service to Reykjavík as its third European destination in its expanding global network. The daily route is timed to coincide with Iceland’s peak summer season and will connect guests to one of the best viewing spots in the world for the August 2026 total solar eclipse.

From Iceland, guests can easily connect to Alaska’s many partner airlines to continue exploring Europe, including Icelandair, which offers more than 35 daily departures from the country’s capital. And thanks to Alaska’s partnership with Icelandair, guests traveling in First Class or as Atmos™ Rewards Gold, Platinum or Titanium elites will also have access to Icelandair’s Saga Lounge at Keflavík International Airport.

Coming soon: Alaska’s largest, landmark lounge investment

As Alaska grows its international footprint, the airline is also introducing a new, world-class lounge at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, a key part of its broader investment in the global guest experience.

When it opens in late 2027, the new global Alaska Lounge will become the largest airline lounge in Seattle and one of the largest in the country. Spanning more than 41,000 square feet with approximately 700 seats across two levels, the sophisticated design will feature showers, multiple premium bars, à la carte dining and chef-curated seasonal menus, unlike anything else in the Alaska Lounge network.

The main level will welcome Alaska Lounge membersdaypass guests and eligible First Class guests. The upper level will be dedicated to international long-haul travelers, serving Suites and lie-flat guests as well as eligible Atmos Titanium members traveling internationally. Both floors will feature freshly prepared locally inspired food, Pacific Northwest beers and craft cocktails, and hand-crafted espresso beverages.

Located in Seattle’s newly refreshed C Concourse, the Alaska Lounge will offer expansive views of the Olympic Mountains and the airfield below. The project is part of Alaska’s multimillion-dollar investment in its lounge network, which includes a new location in Portland opening this summer, along with the carrier’s first lounge in San Diego and a new, expanded lounge in Honolulu, both slated for early 2028.

A more connected global journey

The lounge in Seattle builds on Alaska’s previously announced international business class Suites experience on the airline’s growing fleet of 787-9 Dreamliners. The Suites experience represents the beginning of Alaska’s next era in long-haul travel, a thoughtfully designed journey from curb to cabin, with additional enhancements to be unveiled soon.

Now flying to Incheon, London and Rome, the Suites experience will also debut on Seattle–Tokyo service this fall with the return of the 787 to the market. Featuring 34 international business class seats, guests traveling in the Suites enjoy a refined journey, including plush Filson-designed bedding and travel amenity kits with Salt & Stone products, multi-course dining, a customizable Salt & Straw dessert service and a regionally inspired meal before landing.

Alaska’s new exclusive check-in lobby for Suites and Atmos Titanium guests is now open in Seattle, allowing for a seamless start to their journey. The Seattle Suites lobby is an exclusive experience with a dedicated entrance to TSA and is extended to immediate family or up to two guests on the same reservation. Dedicated Suites and Titanium member check-in lanes are also rolling out across Alaska’s key hubs soon, including Anchorage, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and internationally in Rome, Tokyo and Seoul, with London starting today and Reykjavík to follow.

Guests traveling to and from Reykjavík, operated on a Boeing 737-8 MAX, will enjoy an elevated onboard experience. First Class guests receive plush Filson-designed blankets, along with pillows and a Filson travel amenity kit filled with Salt & Stone products. Guests in the Main Cabin are treated to a complimentary meal service, including a hot main, small salad and dessert, with vegetarian options available. Guests also enjoy a curated lineup of West Coast beverages, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, such as the Cloud Cruiser IPA from Fremont Brewing of Seattle or Canoe Ridge Chardonnay from Walla Walla, WA.

Alaska is currently installing its entire 737-8 MAX fleet with ultra-fast Wi-Fi so guests can stay connected on their way to Reykjavík, complimentary thanks to T-Mobile and powered by Starlink. Alaska recently became the first airline in the world to equip its entire regional fleet with Starlink; and together with Hawaiian Airlines, will become the first U.S. carrier to offer Starlink on 100% of its wide-body fleet this fall when installation of Starlink is complete on its Dreamliner fleet.

Atmos Rewards members enjoy gatetogate connectivity, enabling streaming, browsing and messaging throughout the journey. Membership is free and allows guests to earn miles for future travel on Alaska and its oneworld partner airlines.

With new service to Rome, London and Reykjavík, Alaska is bringing together expanded international service and a powerful combined network with Hawaiian Airlines. Together, these investments mark a new chapter in Alaska’s global growth, designed to connect guests to more of the world with comfort and care – the Alaska way.

Why Belize in the off-season is the best-kept secret in the Caribbean

Belize header

There’s a version of Belize that most travelers never see simply because they’ve been told to wait. Wait for the so-called “dry season.” Wait for peak travel windows. But if you wait, you might miss something special: Belize stripped of its crowds, softened by afternoon rain showers, and even more alive with festivals and cultural events.

After all, there’s a reason why Alaska Airlines continues flying during what Belize calls its “green season” — because if you’re willing to put up with the occasional rain shower, you’ll get to experience facets of the jewel in the crown of Central America in a whole new light.

Belize

Getting to Belize with Alaska Airlines and Atmos™ Rewards

I’ve been visiting Belize several times a year for a decade. I’ve written two guidebooks to the small country, penned countless travel articles; in that time, I have traveled to Belize through just about every route and medium possible — including an overnight bus from Guatemala City.

But flying to Belize from Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines is far and away my favorite route, which is why I chose this option for my most recent off-season visit. The more direct approach from California helped, but the seamless experiences I got through my Atmos Gold status sealed the deal: the relaxing lounge at Los Angeles International Airport, an upgraded seat and easy onboarding using the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app. Plus, it was nice to spread out as I enjoyed a chicken and noodle dish that tasted as if I had been dining in a restaurant. By the time we touched down, I felt genuinely rested.

Flying Alaska Airlines with Atmos Rewards status is the ideal way to kick off any vacation, but especially a destination where the unique confluence of Caribbean and Central American culture invites visitors to “go slow.”

The case for going to Belize in the off-season

It’s true that Belize’s off-season (roughly May through November) is technically the rainy season; it is also warmer on average. But here’s the thing — Belize is a subtropical country, which means the weather is gloriously unpredictable, regardless of the time of year. Storms roll in and move on. Rain comes in bursts, as does the sun.

What you gain in exchange for a little weather uncertainty is significant. Rates at hotels and resorts drop considerably, and the most popular spots, which can feel overrun in January, offer more breathing room.

Certain experiences only exist in the off-season. For example, I’ve planned trips around summer-ripened mangos alone. In July, the Belize Lobster Fest has become a countrywide phenomenon as lobster is finally allowed to be caught and eaten. In September, Belize puts on huge celebrations for its independence, the Battle of St. George’s Caye, and Carnival.

Placencia

There’s something in Belize for every traveler

Belize stands out as a destination for its world-class diving and Caribbean experiences, lush jungles brimming with wildlife and ancient Maya ruins, and the many cultures that call the country of 430,000 home. Because Belize is small, travelers can make the most of what’s on offer even when time is limited.

For this trip, I booked my entire package via Atmos Rewards and Alaska Vacations: I rented a car at the airport with Avis to drive down the new Coastal Highway and stayed at the beachfront Itz’Ana Resort on the Placencia peninsula. The ease of flying to Belize with Alaska persisted off the plane: I’ve never spent less time in a car rental office.

(Editor’s note:Atmos Rewards members can earn points on qualifying Alaska Vacations bookings and unlock exclusive savings and travel perks. Book now to start earning more on your next trip.)

Snorkeling
Image of a Belizean bird
Placemcoa

Once in Placencia, my first stop was a full-day trip to Moho Caye, a 12-acre island off the coast of Belize, with a locally owned tour operator. We departed from the dock at Three Iguanas Villa, and the water beneath our boat, “Dancing Mermaid,” transformed to a dreamy cerulean throughout the 30-minute journey. Along the way, a pod of bottlenose dolphins — including a baby — swam alongside the vessel.

Between sipping from freshly plucked coconuts and lounging in hammocks, we snorkeled lazily around the island’s pristine white beaches. What greeted us was a dense, thriving coral forest populated by parrotfish, nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays. One guest surfaced after an hour of underwater exploration and said, “I think I’ve found my new obsession.”

Driving from Placencia to the inland adventure hub of San Ignacio via the stunning Hummingbird Highway only takes a few hours, and the rewards are extraordinary. Where Placencia moves to the rhythm of lapping waves, San Ignacio pulses with jungle sounds: howler monkeys at dawn, the rush of the Macal River, the chirp of a hundred unseen toucans, macaws and other neotropical birds.

Maya ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol also sit in relative solitude during the low travel season. Cave tubing through jungle rivers, diving into the waterfalls of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and spelunking through caves like Actun Tunichil Muknal are just some of the explorations that await without sacrificing a trip to the beach.

Ali in Belize

My lessons learned from 10 years of Belize travel

I recommend the same approach for first-time travelers and repeat guests: spend time on the coast and in the jungle, and wherever you go, lean into the local culture, which lends itself to warm, helpful, and playful hospitality. Part of Belize’s beauty is in the ability to connect directly with the people who live there.

First-timers tend towards the coast, usually Ambergris Caye, but I prefer Placencia. It offers easy access to both ocean and jungle, with a local atmosphere that rewards wandering, and a pastel shack-lined boardwalk that feels like a movie set.

If you have the time (at least a week), arrange to split it between there and San Ignacio. Many hotels have sister properties: Placencia’s Itz’Ana has Ka’Ana in San Ignacio. Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn has Blancaneaux in the Mountain Pine Ridge. They will help arrange your travel between both places.

For seasoned travelers, pause in the in-between places. Stay at Sleeping Giant Lodge on the Hummingbird Highway to ride horses and take a traditional Maya cooking class. Immerse yourself in Garifuna culture by visiting Hopkins, where bioluminescent lagoon tours and drums that sound like the heartbeat of Belize await.

Sleeping Giant Lodge
Belize ItzAna
Belize

No matter where you go in Belize, let yourself slow down. Enjoy the local fare, especially stew chicken with rice and beans, and fry jacks. Try talking a little kriol. Stay flexible and curious, and Belize will reward you — no matter the season.

Hawaiian Airlines accelerates sustainability efforts by electrifying Honolulu ground support fleet

Image of an airline tractor on the tarmac

Summary

Hawaiian Airlines is electrifying its Honolulu ground support fleet, replacing 116 diesel and propane vehicles with lithium battery-powered equipment to reduce emissions, noise and fuel use.

The transition supports sustainability and operations improvements, cutting greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing efficiency and working conditions for ramp employees, backed by new airport charging infrastructure in partnership with the State of Hawaiʻi.

Hawaiian Airlines today unveiled a new fleet of electric baggage tractors, belt loaders and aircraft pushback tractors that will replace 116 diesel and propane ground support equipment (GSE) at its Honolulu (HNL) hub.

Hawaiian’s investment in lithium battery-powered GSE, which will now represent 73% of its HNL fleet, will eliminate fossil fuel consumption, fumes and spills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It will also lower maintenance costs and engine noise while increasing efficiency and creating a better working environment for hundreds of ramp workers who each day move more than 8,500 checked bags and support some 180 daily flight arrivals and departures at HNL.

Electrifying our ground support fleet in Honolulu, our second-largest hub, represents an important step in our long-term sustainability strategy. By investing in cleaner, quieter and more efficient equipment, we’re reducing our environmental impact, enabling safe and reliable operations, and improving the workplace for our teams and the travel experience for our guests. We extend a big mahalo to the state of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation for their partnership and investment in the GSE charging infrastructure at Honolulu’s airport.”

Ryan Spies

managing director of sustainability, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines

HDOT installed 30 GSE charging stations (60 ports) at multiple locations across HNL to support electric ground operations. An additional four charging stations (eight ports) are under construction and expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Hawaiian Airlines’ new fleet of electric ground support equipment represents an important contribution to our efforts to build long-term energy security for Hawai‘i. As part of this collaborative effort, HDOT is providing Hawaiian Airlines and other airline partners that have electric GSE with access to the charging stations at no cost for two years. As the state continues its ambitious $7 billion plans to modernize our airports, investments in our electric infrastructure coupled with Governor Green’s efforts to secure cleaner energy options for thermal generation, will help improve overall airport efficiency, reduce the cost of power and achieve Hawai‘i’s clean energy goals.”

After extensive testing and team feedback, Hawaiian selected the Charlatte T137 bag tractor and CBL2000 belt loader, and the Kalmar TBL100 towbarless pushback tractors. Charlatte engineers also modified the belt loader to enhance its versatility, allowing the units to support Hawaiian’s narrow-body and wide-body fleet, as well as other aircraft types.

The new equipment also includes enhanced safety features, such as a cab configuration designed to protect bag tractor operators from the sun, wind and rain. Belt loaders have an advanced, sensor-guided aircraft approach system.

The estimated annual environmental benefit of electrifying Hawaiian’s HNL GSE fleet is equivalent to:

  • Planting more than 7,000 trees and allowing them to grow for a decade
  • Removing 65 cars from the road
  • Offsetting the emissions associated with powering 55 homes
  • Avoiding roughly the same emissions as 25 roundtrip flights between Honolulu (HNL) and Seattle (SEA)

Hawaiian intends to expand its fleet of electric GSE as infrastructure becomes available at other Hawai‘i airports. Today, nearly half, or 42% of Alaska Air Group’s GSE fleet — including Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air — is electric.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines continue to advance a broad portfolio of sustainability initiatives to reach net-zero carbon emissions. In addition to being the most fuel-efficient premium U.S. carriers, Hawaiian and Alaska are helping develop new technologies to advance sustainable aviation fuel, and investing in fleet modernization, operational efficiencies, as well as waste reduction and recycling.
