PORTLAND, Ore. (February 10, 2025) – The Portland Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines are once again teaming up to transform this year’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to the Pros Night into a celebration of the HBCU experience across the Portland community. Members of the Howard University Showtime Marching Band and Auxiliary Units will fly to Portland, courtesy of Alaska Airlines, for a weekend of community interaction, celebration, and education. The highlight of the weekend will be the annual HBCU to the Pros game on February 22 when the Trail Blazers take on the Charlotte Hornets.

In alignment with the NBA, the Trail Blazers prioritize highlighting the traditions and impact of HBCUs and the contributions of Black leaders who belong to historically Black fraternities and sororities and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs have served as cultural and intellectual hubs, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and leadership development. They have contributed significantly to Black culture, literature, arts, and sciences and we are excited to showcase those contributions to Rip City throughout the weekend. As the NBA team the farthest from an HBCU, bringing the HBCU experience to Portland invites the local community, specifically Black youth, to get a taste of the rich history, traditions, and culture that HBCU’s embody.

HBCUs play an important role in Alaska’s commitment to contributing in a meaningful way to the communities it serves. Driven by the belief that education has the power to transform the lives of young people, Alaska supports programs like United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. To date, the airline partnered with UNCF to launch a special aircraft livery to symbolize a joint commitment to creating opportunities in education, and established UNCF as a CARE Miles partner, which allows Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members to donate their miles to students flying out for college tours or flying home to be with their families on summer and holiday breaks. As part of the aircraft’s mission, Alaska has also supported several college tours and career and leadership development events. This spring, Alaska will support Portland area students from UNCF and the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center as they go on HBCU tours.

On Friday, February 21 the Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines will host a community event at Portland Community College Cascade Gym (600 N Killingsworth St., Portland OR, 97217) beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be open to the public and feature performances from local dance and music groups, tabling from community groups, and the HU Showtime Marching Band’s first performance in Portland. On Saturday, February 22, both organizations will put on a private pregame mixer for local youth featuring a college and career exploration event made up of current professionals who are HBCU alumni and members of fraternities and sororities of the Divine 9. The weekend will close out on Sunday with another special community event featuring another show stopping performance from HU Showtime Marching Band.

Fans will have multiple opportunities to enjoy the incredible experience of the HU Showtime Marching Band throughout the game night. Prior to tip, catch the band participating in Blaze’s Pregame Parade presented by Polar Beverages throughout the 100 and 300 Level concourses. At halftime, stay in your seats for an epic halftime performance with the band taking over the Moda Center court with the sounds and choreography that make HBCU marching bands iconic. In addition to the band, the BlazerDancers will be joined by special guest dancers for a performance out on the court during a break in the game action.

In addition to the performances, the HBCU experience will be felt throughout Moda Center on February 22. Every attendee will receive a booklet upon entering the arena highlighting the night’s activations and entertainment. Back by popular demand, DJ Drae Slapz, an international DJ and artist, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will be mixing tunes and providing the vibes as fans venture through the concourse. Throughout the night, special videos will play throughout the arena featuring the Local Portland NPHC Chapter and HBCU Alumni. Also, check out Black History posters highlighting HBCU alumni and D9 members who have made significant cultural impact.

Alaska Airlines is excited to announce the official reopening of its newly expanded Alaska Lounge at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport after nearly a year of development and construction.  The spacious oasis now offers more than double the seating – from 65 seats to 140 – and an additional 2,600 square feet for the ultimate space to reset, recharge and relax.

Alaska Air Group reports fourth quarter and full year 2024 results

Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK) today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2024.

Air Group completed 2024 on a high note, with record revenues of $11.7 billion and a GAAP pretax margin of 4.6%. On an adjusted basis, the full year pretax margin of 7.1% is expected to be amongst the best in the industry despite the completed acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines and fleet grounding in the first quarter of the year.

This was a transformational year as we brought Hawaiian Airlines into Alaska Air Group and began our journey to unlock $1 billion in incremental pretax profit over the next three years. Quarter in Review

Air Group’s consolidated results reported in the fourth quarter and full year 2024 include Hawaiian Airlines as of September 18, 2024 while prior comparable periods exclude any Hawaiian results. Discussion of fourth quarter results and forward-looking guidance refer to pro forma historical results as provided in prior 8-K filings and represented below.

Our GAAP pretax margin for the fourth quarter was 2.2% and GAAP earnings per share was $0.55. On an adjusted basis, our pretax margin was 3.9% and earnings per share was $0.97, which exceeded our latest guidance by approximately $0.50 at the midpoint driven by revenue and cost improvement across our business as well as lower non-operating expenses. Due to these same out-performance factors, full year adjusted EPS of $4.87 also surpassed the better end of our prior guidance range.

Fourth quarter revenue was stronger than expected across both Alaska and Hawaiian, building on the strength seen in the fall, and exiting the year with momentum driven by sustained leisure demand and an uptick in corporate travel which improved close in demand. With mild winter weather to end the year, we delivered reliable operational performance for our guests throughout the holiday travel period, with higher-than-expected completion rate and load factor. After inflecting positive in August, unit revenues improved nearly 6 points sequentially from 1% in the third quarter to 7% in the fourth quarter. This momentum has continued, with ongoing close-in strength in early Q1 bookings. Combined with a stable industry capacity backdrop, we are encouraged by these early indications for Q1 and a constructive start to 2025.

Unit cost performance in the fourth quarter also exceeded our guidance, up 8.6% as compared to pro forma 2023, as disciplined non-fuel cost performance offset higher performance-based pay accruals and better completion rates drove higher capacity. Throughout 2024, unit costs remained pressured from constrained capacity as a result of aircraft delivery delays, but are expected to improve through 2025 as we normalize resource levels and capacity compared to 2024.

First Quarter & Full Year 2025 Guidance

For the first quarter and full year 2025, we expect the following results compared to pro forma historical results as if the acquisition had occurred on January 1, 2023.

Financial Results and Updates:

Reported net income for the fourth quarter and full year 2024 under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) of $71 million, or $0.55 per share, and $395 million, or $3.08 per share. These results compare to net loss for the fourth quarter and net income for the full year 2023 of $2 million, or $0.02 per share, and $235 million, or $1.83 per share.

Reported net income for the fourth quarter and full year 2024, excluding special items and other adjustments, of $125 million, or $0.97 per share, and $625 million, or $4.87 per share. These results compare to net income for the fourth quarter and full year 2023, excluding special items and other adjustments, of $38 million, or $0.30 per share, and $583 million, or $4.53 per share.

Generated an adjusted pretax margin of 7.1% for the full year 2024, among the highest in the industry.

Generated $1.5 billion in operating cash flow for the full year 2024.

Completed $2 billion in financing, backed by the Company’s Mileage Plan program, and retired $1.6 billion of certain debt acquired with Hawaiian Airlines.

Repurchased 3.9 million shares of common stock for approximately $250 million in the fourth quarter, bringing total repurchases to 5.5 million shares for $312 million in 2024.

Authorized a new $1 billion dollar share repurchase plan to be executed over the next four years, with repurchases beginning in January 2025.

Alaska and Horizon employees earned $325 million of incentive pay in 2024 by achieving profitability, safety, sustainability, and operational targets. The payout represents approximately six weeks of pay for most employees.

Operational Updates

Reached an Agreement in Concept with Alaska flight attendants for an updated collective bargaining agreement in January 2025.

Announced the launch of Seattle as an international gateway with nonstop routes to Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon in 2025, with plans to add 12 international widebody destinations by 2030.

Approved to fly nonstop service between San Diego International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, making Alaska the only airline to operate this route.

Expanding service from the states of Alaska and Oregon beginning this summer, including nonstop service from Anchorage to Detroit and Sacramento; Portland to Houston, Fairbanks, and Eugene; and Medford to San Diego.

Hawaiian received two A330-300 freighter aircraft from Amazon during the fourth quarter, bringing the total within the airline’s fleet to six

Commercial Updates

Announced improvements to Alaska’s Mileage Plan for 2025, including more milestone rewards and new ways to earn elite qualifying miles.

Introduced Alaska’s new premium credit card, which will be available late summer 2025 and will provide holders exclusive travel benefits and perks.

Launched Huaka’i by Hawaiian, a free program for HawaiianMiles members that offers kama‘āina (Hawai’i residents) exclusive travel benefits when flying with Hawaiian Airlines.

Alaska Airlines rewards employees with extra 6 weeks of pay for remarkable performance in a pivotal year

Yet, our teams rose to the challenge – with an unwavering commitment to safety – and restored Alaska Airlines to the safe, reliable operation we’re known and trusted for. We had a plan and faced some significant headwinds, but our team came together and finished the year in one of our strongest positions yet.  

And we couldn’t be prouder to cap off the year by investing in our people with the largest payout in the history of our Performance-Based Pay (PBP) program. This year, it’s more than 11%, or roughly 6 weeks of additional pay.

Y’all, for the first time, Alaska Airlines is linking the Rose City to the largest city in Texas. We’re adding a new daily, nonstop flight between Portland and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston starting May 15, 2025. We’ll also resume twice-daily nonstop service between Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and offer a new route between San Diego and Medford, Oregon. All three routes will fly year-round. Portland is one of our key West Coast hubs, with more than 100 average daily departures currently serving 58 nonstop destinations from Portland, including four international routes.

Route highlights

Portland-Houston:

Houston is currently our largest unserved city from Portland. Our new nonstop connects a pair of dynamic destinations that will be attractive to both business and leisure travelers. The flight will depart Portland at 10:30 a.m. and will depart Houston just before 6 p.m. This will be the third nonstop route from Portland to Texas joining Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin.

Portland-Eugene:

We worked hard to make sure the timing of the two roundtrips between Portland and Eugene hit the right mark for our guests, especially for itineraries that require a connection in Portland. Another benefit: There’s a 5:30 a.m. departure from Eugene that can be paired with a 9:55 p.m. return flight that allows for a full day in Portland without staying the night.

Medford-San Diego:

This route also offers convenient flight times with a late morning departure from San Diego and a mid-afternoon departure from Medford. In mid-May, we’ll offer the most daily departures and the greatest number of seats from Medford. This new service also supports our continued investment in San Diego and marks our 41st destination from there.

New nonstop routes

We have also increased our flying within Oregon this summer. Beginning May 15, our Portland-Medford route will be served four times a day instead of once, and Portland-Redmond will start flying year-round three times daily. Tickets for these flights can be purchased now at alaskaair.com.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines offer support to those impacted by Los Angeles area wildfires

Summary

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are donating $100,000 to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and five million Mileage Plan miles to the American Red Cross for disaster relief related to the Los Angeles wildfires.

Customers can contribute by donating their miles, with all donations matched up to five million miles until January 17, 2025.

The devastation from the wildfires across Los Angeles County is heartbreaking. There are so many who have lost so much, so quickly. Help is badly needed.

To assist with immediate relief efforts, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines — part of Alaska Air Group — are supporting the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation with a $100,000 donation.

In addition, we’re donating five million Mileage Plan miles to the American Red Cross to help people affected by disasters big and small, including storms and countless other crises. The Red Cross relies on donated miles to help support its mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies like the Los Angeles wildfires.

Hawaiian Airlines reveals first look at future premium lounge in Honolulu

Hawaiian’s new lounge at its Honolulu hub is the latest in a series of enhancements to deliver a superior airport guest experience across the islands. 

The lounge will be located at the entrance of the Mauka Concourse in Terminal 1 and will be five times larger than the existing lounge in Honolulu.

Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines guests will experience premium leisure combined with Hawaiian’s signature hospitality

Hawaiian Airlines is excited to unveil a preview of its largest lounge investment at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), which will be home to the company’s new premium lounge set to open at the end of 2027.

In December, Alaska Air Group announced plans to build a new lounge in Honolulu as part of its three-year strategic plan following its combination with Hawaiian Airlines.

New nonstop routes

Here are the 15 nonstop destinations we’ll fly between Anchorage and the Lower 48 and Hawaii this summer:

Alaska Airlines names new vice president of maintenance and engineering

Summary

Executive John Wiitala joins Alaska with more than 34 years of airline experience

Alaska Airlines has named John Wiitala as its new vice president of maintenance and engineering. In this principal leadership role, Wiitala will lead professionals throughout the division who maintain the highest levels of safety and compliance with more than 237 mainline Boeing aircraft across multiple maintenance bases.

Wiitala joins Alaska after 34 years with United Airlines, most recently as vice president and chief engineer of tech operations, safety and compliance, where he was responsible for the United fleet. Prior to that role, he was vice president of technical services. Wiitala joined United in 1992 and held other engineering jobs throughout the organization including director of engineering and managing director of project engineering.  

His responsibilities at Alaska will include line maintenance operations; maintenance of airframes, components and engines; stores and distribution; quality assurance; maintenance planning; engineering and reliability; and fleet projects.   

Among his accomplishments at United, he expanded the scope of operations of the airline, which grew from under 450 aircraft to 944. He was on board during the United-Continental merger, helping the airline successfully navigate integration and grow its multi-fleet operations.   

With over three decades in technical operations’ leadership roles to include both narrow and widebody aircraft, I welcome John’s expertise, leadership and vision as Alaska becomes a global airline. John will lead our team to uphold the highest standards of safety, quality and compliance for Alaska’s fleet while combining operations with Hawaiian Airlines.”

Flight 1282, one year later – what we’ve learned and how we’ve changed

On Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines temporarily grounded its fleet of 65 737-9 MAX aircraft after a door plug detached during Flight 1282 from Portland, OR to Ontario, CA. This was a harrowing experience for everyone onboard and we are deeply grateful for the courage and professionalism displayed by the crew of AS 1282 who kept everyone on the aircraft safe that day. 

Immediately following the event, Alaska’s quality and audit team conducted a thorough review of Boeing’s production quality and control systems. We also enhanced our own quality oversight of Alaska aircraft by adding experienced members of our own team to validate work and quality on the Boeing 737 production line.  

Today, we are sharing an update from Alaska’s VP of Audit, Brooke Vatheuer, on what we’ve learned and the progress we have seen in Boeing and its suppliers’ production line, its work processes, training and safety culture.

January 5th will mark one year since a door plug detached from one of our aircraft after takeoff on Flight 1282 from Portland, OR to Ontario, CA. It’s fair to say this event changed our airline and our industry. We continue to extend our sincere gratitude to our crew for their exceptional skill, courage and professionalism in ensuring the safe return of everyone to Portland.  

As we mark one year since the door plug incident, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned, the changes we have implemented and the path forward. This incident has provided us with valuable insights into our operational practices and has strengthened our commitment to safety and compliance across all levels of our organization. Together, we have made significant strides in collaboration with Boeing and our other partners, which we will continue to build upon. 

What we’ve learned and the changes we have made 

Aviation safety is based on many layers of oversight. In the past year, we have spent a lot of time with Boeing leaders reviewing their improvement plans, sharing SMS (safety management systems) best practices and monitoring their progress.  

In addition to oversight from the FAA, our visits to Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita (which makes the fuselage) and the Boeing factory in Renton have allowed us to directly observe the ongoing improvements and offer an additional “second set of eyes.” Our audit team is actively engaged with Boeing’s production quality and control systems. By walking the factory floor and interacting with management and frontline employees, we have fostered transparency and openness, providing us with the necessary information and access to execute our oversight activities. 

To further enhance our oversight at Boeing Renton, we have augmented our team with three M&E employees who possess expertise in aircraft maintenance and inspection. Our three Aircraft Acquisition Representatives (AARs) are now on-site at Boeing five days a week, covering different shifts and remaining on call to conduct inspections as defined by our standards. Ausgael, our business partner, is also present seven days a week, providing continuous oversight. Additionally, we continue to have three engineers at the Boeing delivery center to perform customer walks and oversee customer flight duties, helping to ensure that our aircraft undergo thorough inspections prior to delivery. This further reinforces our commitment to demanding and maintaining rigorous safety standards and requiring that all aircraft meet our expectations before delivery. 

We have also seen improvements in Boeing’s Mechanic Training Program, which now includes extended training periods and increased hands-on opportunities. There has been a focus on communicating the importance of safety and compliance, with a strong emphasis on voluntary reporting. Furthermore, we have observed positive changes in work processes, particularly regarding traveled work, where a SMS risk assessment framework is now employed to manage tasks effectively. We are encouraged to see Boeing leadership’s focus on safety and their commitment to cultural change. 

What are our next steps

Alaska’s employees excel and take pride in our culture of safety, which involves persistent efforts to improve operations in all areas, including in our relationships with Boeing and its suppliers. We are optimistic about Boeing’s dedication and positive momentum in making significant improvements thus far. Looking ahead, we have planned several visits to Boeing in 2025 to ensure our teams and Ausgael are inspecting our aircraft thoroughly and to observe Boeing’s continued process and cultural improvements firsthand. Additionally, we will extend our efforts to the 787 line in Charleston as we prepare for future deliveries.  

Safety is not just a policy – it is our core value that guides our actions every single day. Each of us plays a role in maintaining the safety for each other and our guests.
