Minicucci in Italy: Ben’s five tips to make the most of a trip to Rome

Ben in front of Colosseum

One of the best parts of traveling the world is getting to experience places and cultures through the food we eat and the drinks we have along the way. With our nonstop flight between Seattle and Rome, Alaska Airlines has unlocked your direct connection to Italy’s history, pace of life, and yes, some legendary pasta and wine.

Launching nonstop service to Rome was particularly special to me – Italy is in my blood and a big part of my identity. My parents were born about 150 miles southeast of Rome, in the province of Campobasso, and they immigrated to Canada in the 1950s, a decade before I was born. I grew up in a very Italian household. At home, we spoke the unique dialect of their tiny village, shared traditions and homemade meals, and celebrated our heritage with enormous pride.

Ben in Rome

After I received my engineering degree from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, I made my first trip to Campobasso to surprise my grandparents. I remember arriving in the village, jumping right into conversations with the locals and being proud of the double takes I’d gotten: They couldn’t believe this kid from Montreal was speaking their dialect. That trip really showed me the power that travel has in connecting people – across oceans, generations and cultures. All that to say, you can imagine how proud I was to share our heritage with my family and show them the ropes following Alaska’s inaugural flight from Seattle to Rome.

I encourage everyone, at least once in their life, to experience Rome, a place I deeply love. Here are a few things I always recommend for an authentic and iconic experience in Italy’s capital city.

Ben in Rome
Ben in Rome

Plan to walk – a lot

Rome is best experienced by foot, and some of the best moments will be while walking around the city, navigating narrow alleys and exploring piazzas with the people you love.

Pack comfortable clothes and shoes because you will walk a lot and log some serious steps on the sampietrini – the basalt cobblestones that pave the historic streets (we topped more than 20,000 steps each day). My partner Miranda would also encourage bringing a jacket or scarf in case you need to cover your shoulders while visiting the historic churches or the Vatican.

Start your day with espresso – and keep it simple

If you love coffee, there is great espresso everywhere in Rome. If you are ordering a shot, you can stand right there at the counter and make it quick. Or grab a table and enjoy the experience: take in the aromas of the roasted beans and steamed milk, listen to the Italians sharing chiacchiera (small talk), and watch the baristas do their masterful work.

Another tip: Italian culture reserves milk-based drinks, like the cappuccino, for the morning – not in the afternoon. Never order a cappuccino after 11 a.m. as it’s said to be bad for your digestion. If you need a pick-me-up later in the day, go with espresso.

Ben sipping espresso

Always make time for gelato

Gelato is definitely part of the Rome experience. Look for places with simple ingredients, metal storage containers, and natural colors. Italy is known for some amazing flavors that are nods to their rich agriculture (think: stracciatella, pistachio, hazelnut). For me, I love the simplicity of a rich vanilla. Gelato isn’t something to overthink. Savor the ingredients, explore different shops and flavors with curiosity, and make gelato an excuse to cool off and take a leisurely break.

See the big sites early

Save iconic places like the Trevi Fountain and the outside of the Colosseum for the early morning hours, like 6 a.m. You’ll avoid the crowds and it’s much quieter, so you’ll get a completely different perspective.

If I could only go to one monument in Rome, it would be the Colosseum. It’s an enormous structure, with arches and walkways made of stone and concrete. Every time I go, I try to look at it through my engineering lens and work out questions like, how does something built 2,000 years ago still stand today? The Colosseum was crafted deliberately and with discipline, strong fundamentals, and longevity in mind – much like how I think of Alaska and our future as a global carrier with a strong foundation.

Ben trevi fountain
Ben Trevi Fountain

Head just off the main streets for meals

Almost always, the best food is just a block or two away from the city’s busiest areas on a random side street. There, you’ll find smaller, family-run restaurants where the pace is slower, and the food is its own unique experience. And don’t judge a book by its cover: sometimes these mom-and-pop spots may not look like much, but they could offer the best eating and drinking you will ever encounter. Another tip: try to go where the Italians go and trust the places that have a lot of them!

Putting it all in perspective

Rome is an important step in our company’s future and the beginning of our expansion into Europe. We’re enormously proud to connect our guests to these incredible places and be the carrier that gives them an unforgettable travel experience while exploring the places and the people they love.

At Alaska, we’re building something that lasts, and we’re just getting started. We’re grateful to have you with us on this journey. Andiamo – let’s go!

Hawaiian Airlines is introducing Tide & Vine, a new Main Cabin wine offering inspired by the spirit of the Islands and the ocean that surrounds them. Available on board now, the Tide & Vine program includes a red blend, white blend and brut bubbles, each crafted to bring a sense of place to the inflight experience.

Beyond the glass, a portion of the proceeds from the Tide & Vine program support Mālama Maunalua, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting Oʻahu’s Maunalua Bay. The partnership builds on Hawaiian’s existing relationship with Mālama Maunalua through the airline’s Team Kōkua volunteer program, deepening a shared commitment to caring for the ocean that connects communities. In recognition of World Oceans Day, approximately 25 volunteers from Hawaiian and Tide & Vine joined Mālama Maunalua to help pull invasive algae from the nearshore waters of Maunalua Bay. Volunteers extracted more than 260 pounds of gorilla ogo, prickly seaweed and leather mudweed. Over the past 17 years, Mālama Maunalua’s “Great Huki Project” has removed 4 million pounds of these invasive species from 27 acres of the bay.

Alaska Airlines breaks ground on new hangar facility at Portland International Airport

Summary

The hangar will add 125,000 square feet of space for indoor aircraft maintenance and will enable the airline to service widebody aircraft

The facility is slated to create more than 100 jobs for local workers

The project builds on the airline’s strong commitment to Portland, where it is the carrier with the most flights

Today, Alaska Airlines celebrates the ceremonial groundbreaking of a new maintenance hangar in Portland, Oregon. Following final permitting approvals, this hangar will be constructed adjacent to the airline’s existing Horizon Air Ops Center & Maintenance Hangar at Portland International Airport (PDX), adding approximately 125,000 square feet of space for indoor aircraft maintenance of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ mainline fleets and 60,000 square feet of space for offices, engine, machine and sheet metal shops and support areas.

The new facility will allow maintenance technicians to work on up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody aircraft at one time, enabling the airline to recover out-of-service aircraft more quickly and relieve pressure on its primary maintenance facilities in Seattle and other hubs.

ASHA

A new maintenance hangar in Portland is both an investment in one of our critical hubs and a key that unlocks growth possibilities throughout our network. With more flexibility on where we can perform maintenance and the aircraft we can service, we can run our operation more efficiently.”

Benjamin Brookman

Vice President of Real Estate and Airport Affairs, Alaska Airlines

The new hangar represents the carrier’s ongoing commitment to Portland and the nearly 3,000 Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air employees based in the area. The facility is slated to create more than 100 highly skilled jobs for local maintenance technicians, engineers and service professionals.

PDX is a job-generating, economic powerhouse, fueling the Port’s work to create good-paying opportunities that support families, growth and connection. The new hangar embodies our strong partnership with Alaska, and our mutual commitment to making our region a place where everyone can thrive. It’s a smart investment in our local talent that’s sure to boost our region’s economy and strengthen our future.”

Dan Pippenger

Chief Aviation Officer, Port of Portland

Alaska Airlines has proudly served Portland since 1979 and is the city’s largest carrier with more than 130 daily departures this summer. The hangar construction project builds on Alaska’s recent series of investments at PDX. The airline expanded its airport lobby presence at PDX in 2024 and opened a new, 14,000-foot Alaska Lounge earlier this month. This summer, Alaska will provide new flight options for its guests in Portland, launching year-round service to Everett/Paine Field (PAE) and Pasco–Tri-Cities (PSC), along with seasonal service to Baltimore (BWI), Philadelphia (PHL), St. Louis (STL) and Jackson Hole (JAC). By this fall, Alaska will offer 50% more seats in Portland than just two years ago, reflecting strong demand for travel from the Pacific Northwest city.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the facility located?

7646 NE Airtrans Way, Portland, OR.

When will the facility be fully built?

The anticipated completion of the facility is the second quarter of 2028.

How many jobs will the facility create?

The facility is slated to create more than 100 highly skilled jobs for local maintenance technicians, engineers and service professionals.

Will the facility be LEED certified?

Yes, the facility will be LEED certified. It will also feature EV charging stations, water conservation features and sustainable building materials.

Why is Portland important to Alaska Airlines?

Portland is one of Alaska Airlines’ key West Coast hubs, with more than 130 daily departures scheduled for this summer. By this fall, Alaska will offer 50% more seats in Portland than just two years ago, reflecting strong demand for travel and the airline’s continued investment in the market.

How much did Alaska invest in the new hangar?

Alaska is investing over $135 million in its new maintenance hangar, as part of its broader investment in its operation in Portland.

If the new hangar can hold 787-9 aircraft, does that mean Alaska plans to add global flights from Portland?

Alaska doesn’t currently offer global routes from Portland, but we are always evaluating our flight network and considering which routes could make the most sense for each market.

Will this new hangar complement or replace facilities operated by Hawaiian Airlines prior to the integration?

The new hangar will complement the airline’s existing PDX footprint, which includes Hawaiian Airlines facilities and Horizon Air’s operations center. After a joint collective bargaining agreement (JCBA) is ratified for the Alaska and Hawaiian Maintenance & Engineering teams, we will have a clear understanding of the composition of our combined workforce.

The new “Moana” liveries will inspire guests around the world with a message of exploration – “Voyage beyond the reef” – on all three aircraft ahead of the theatrical release of Disney’s highly anticipated reimagining on July 10. Characters from the film – including the shape-shifting demigod Maui as a powerful hawk wielding his iconic fishhook and the coconut-armored Kakamora catching rides in the sea breeze – appear throughout each design. Guiding the crew on their journey from the wingtips are Moana’s animal friends Heihei, the clumsy chicken, and Pua, the adorable pot-bellied pig. Moana’s beloved island friends will also appear in the overhead luggage bins inside the aircrafts’ cabin.

Voyaging is at the heart of who we are as the airline of Hawaiʻi, a place grounded in a legacy that began with navigators who crossed the Pacific using traditional wayfinding techniques. Alisa Onishi

Managing Director of Hawaiʻi Marketing, Hawaiian Airlines

The three live-action “Moana” aircraft join previous liveries that celebrated the Disney film’s animated predecessors, “Moana” and “Moana 2.” Hawaiian, which has served Hawaiʻi for more than 96 years, has also long honored the legacy of early Polynesian voyagers and celestial navigation across its fleet, including naming each aircraft after native birds, stars, plants and forests.

Alaska E-175LR aircraft

Summary

Patients across central and eastern Washington state can now receive same-day home deliveries of vital medications from their Seattle-based healthcare providers through a new pharmacy-logistics service that uses Alaska Air Cargo’s next-flight-out GoldStreak Package Express shipping to transport prescriptions.

Between 70 and 90 patients every week in Yakima (YAK), Wenatchee (EAT) and Spokane (GEG) get their medications from UW Medicine, Providence Swedish and other providers in Seattle (SEA) through guaranteed GoldStreak shipments flying across the state.

Phox Health’s door-to-door services are now used by most of the large healthcare providers in the Seattle metro region, and the company is exploring expansion to providers and patients in other states, including Hawai’i.

The cooler returns via air cargo to the provider’s pharmacy to be reused, eliminating the waste of single-use packaging.

Phox Health’s door-to-door services are now used by most of the large healthcare providers in the Seattle metro region, and the company is exploring expansion to providers and patients in other states, including Hawai’i. As in Washington state, Gir sees the greatest need in reaching patients who live far away from urban areas where providers’ specialty pharmacies are located.

“It’s our belief that every patient deserves the best delivery experience for their medication no matter where they live,” Gir said.

Alaska Air Cargo’s GoldStreak service guarantees a shipment is ready for pickup within one hour of arrival and is used to transport lab samples and medical supplies to communities we serve throughout our network.

When a customer chooses GoldStreak, they are trusting us with something they cannot afford to lose. Lives and livelihoods are counting on us.”

From Hawaiʻi to the world: Two brothers soaring together at Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines

For brothers Kaʻimi and Kekumu “Kumu” N., aviation is more than a career — it’s a shared journey that has connected them across skies, time zones and two beloved brands they proudly represent.

Kaʻimi, a Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant, first fell in love with the idea of flying while growing up in Hawaiʻi and watching aircraft of all types traveling to, from and within the Hawaiian Islands. As a child, he found inspiration in a friend’s sister, a flight attendant whose travels sparked his dream to explore beyond the Islands’ shores. After college, Kaʻimi followed that dream and joined Hawaiian in 2012.

“Growing up, the two main airlines serving the Islands were Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines, but I always wanted to work for Hawaiian. This job has allowed me to stay connected to my Hawaiʻi roots while still being able to explore the world,” he said.

Kaimi

For Kumu, a Boeing 737 First Officer, the goal was always to work from the flight deck. After spending years at regional carriers in the continental U.S. building flight time and experience, he accepted an offer from Alaska in 2015.

“I kind of followed Kaʻimi to the major airlines,” Kumu said of his older brother, whose path helped shape his own. “I remember my first flight was Seattle to Sacramento. It was a beautiful summer day and a nice, easy first trip. Now, anytime I’m up at altitude, I can’t help but think about how cool this job is.”

ASHA

Despite their different roles, routes and schedules at Alaska and Hawaiian, with Kaʻimi in the cabin and Kumu in the flight deck, their connection has only grown stronger. When they’re both in Hawaiʻi, they’re often together reconnecting with family and enjoying life on island time. They also share a passion for traveling for food and making new memories in destinations around the globe, from Rome and London to Japan and across the U.S.

When asked about each other’s strengths, their answers reflected mutual appreciation and respect.

“Kumu’s skill set is what makes him a pilot that everyone loves and can rely on, being a big asset for the airline. That can’t be overlooked,” Kaʻimi said. “Being able to share stories and experiences we’ve had on the job has been incredible. We can relate to each other more because we are in the same industry.”

“Out of all six siblings, we actually fought the most growing up, but as we got older, we figured it out. I know my brother is always there for me and willing to listen,” Kumu added. “Kaʻimi is a great team member and loves what he does. Everybody loves to work with him.”

As they each pursue their own passions at the combined company, their paths occasionally cross in unexpected ways. “A few months ago, I was scheduled to work Hawaiian’s last Seattle to Honolulu flight of the evening. Kumu had just wrapped up his final flight of the day and raced over to catch his commuter flight back home to Hawaiʻi. It just so happened that Kumu ended up on my flight that night, and that last-minute coincidence gave us the rare chance to fly home together,” Kaʻimi shared.

ASHA

From ramen in Japan to global cuisine in Seattle, the brothers cherish the experiences their careers have brought them — experiences that have only strengthened their bond. “No matter where in the world Kumu or I are flying, we’ll always be there for each other, cheering one another on,” Kaʻimi said.

The first drop includes global award travel from 7,500 points plus a featured Atmos Unlocked auction for a Japan trip

Atmos Members Day is part of a broader push to make Atmos Rewards more engaging, flexible and valuable year-round

Introducing something new for loyal guests: Atmos™ Members Day — a recurring, monthly moment designed to help Atmos Rewards members get more out of their loyalty program experience.

Held on the first Wednesday of every month, Atmos Members Day will deliver a curated mix of exclusive offers, program updates and unique opportunities directly to members through a dedicated email. Rather than one‑off moments, Members Day creates a predictable rhythm — giving members something to look forward to and making it easier to engage with the program in meaningful ways.

A single place to discover what’s new

Each Atmos Members Day brings together the best of the program in one place — from travel inspiration to partner perks and one‑of‑a‑kind experiences. As Brett Catlin, Vice President of Loyalty and Partnerships, International at Alaska Airlines, shared in his note to members, the goal is simple: highlight “the best of what Atmos Rewards has to offer,” while keeping members connected to the latest updates and benefits.

Benefits include:

  • Limited‑time global redemption opportunities
  • Access to exclusive Atmos Unlocked experiences
  • Ways to earn more through everyday activities and partners

Highlights include an expanded cadence of Atmos Global Getaways, now offered monthly – giving members more frequent opportunities to redeem points for destinations around the world.

Members can also explore Atmos Unlocked, featuring elevated, experience‑driven offerings such as this month’s special auction: a curated nine-day journey through Japan with premium stays, guided experiences and immersive cultural moments. Be sure to check out the Atmos Unlocked page as additional experiences drop each Atmos Members Day, too.

In addition, a range of partner offers makes it easier to earn points through everyday travel and dining — reinforcing that Atmos Rewards extends well beyond the flight itself.

While the specific offers will change month to month, the idea stays the same: delivering a steady stream of value, inspiration and access — tailored to how members travel and engage.

Building a more rewarding member experience

Atmos Members Day is part of a broader effort to create a more guest‑centric, flexible loyalty program built on choice – one that meets members where they are and gives them more ways to engage.

By bringing together global flight opportunities, premium experiences and partner benefits into one monthly touchpoint, we’re making it easier for members to discover what’s possible with their points and to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise. Most importantly, this new format creates an ongoing connection with members, ensuring they stay informed, inspired and rewarded — not just once in a while, but every month.

Atmos members can ensure they get each edition of Members Day to their inbox by logging into their account and adjusting their profile settings. Under ‘Communications’, ensure that ‘Monthly points statement and news’ is checked.
