HONOLULU – The Hawaiian Airlines Foundation has awarded $150,000 in grants to three Maui organizations leading the recovery efforts following the devastating August 2023 Maui wildfires. Now part of the Alaska Air Group, the Foundation was established to support Hawai‘i programs that promote environmental sustainability, educational advancement and the preservation of Hawaiian culture. Both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines share a long history of supporting nonprofits and programs that are important to local communities in Hawai‘i.

The grants were awarded yesterday evening during a reception ceremony hosted by Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. Each nonprofit organization received $50,000 to further their impactful work.

During his remarks to attendees, Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, highlighted each carriers’ continued support of Hawai‘i’s communities, “Even though Alaska has served Hawai‘i for more than 17 years, we know that our responsibility to these islands will be much greater in the years ahead as we join with Hawaiian Airlines, which has been Hawai‘i’s airline for the past 95 years and counting. We feel this deeply and appreciate input from the community, and from all of you, to help us serve the people of Hawai‘i well for generations to come.”

The three recipients of the Hawaiian Airlines Foundation grants include:

Pūnana Leo o Lahaina, a Hawaiian language immersion preschool established in 2016, is dedicated to revitalizing the Hawaiian language and serves as a model for language preservation in West Maui. The school was destroyed in the wildfires, and the grant will support its rebuilding efforts, ensuring the continuation of its mission to perpetuate Hawaiian culture and language among the island’s youngest learners.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines for their continued support and aloha as we rebuild the Pūnana Leo o Lahaina, focusing on our foundation of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and aloha ʻohana,” said Kumu Karyn Kanekoa of Pūnana Leo o Lahaina. “Aloha ʻohana is a vital and cherished aspect of Hawaiian culture. The overall success of ʻohana and community rests on the responsibility of its members. Therefore, we extend our heartfelt mahalo to Hawaiian and Alaska for embracing this responsibility. E Ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!”

Lahaina Public Library, a cornerstone of the community since its opening on March 4, 1956, was tragically lost in the wildfires. Built on Moku‘ula, the former royal taro patch of King Kamehameha III, the 4,540-square-foot library housed approximately 21,000 volumes and served as a vital hub for reading, technology access, and community programs. The grant will assist in establishing a temporary location, slated to open by Summer 2025, providing necessary furniture, technology, and materials to restore a sense of normalcy and healing for the West Maui community.

“Public libraries are community hubs that bring people together to read, learn and connect. They are comfortable living rooms of the community where people find new stories, use technology and find spaces to dream,” said Stacey Aldrich, State Librarian of the Hawai‘i State Public Library System. “We are very grateful to the Hawaiian Airlines Foundation for supporting our future Lahaina Public Library space where our friends and neighbors will be able to connect and heal.”

Treecovery Hawai‘i has been instrumental in addressing the environmental impact of the wildfires, which destroyed over 20,000 trees in Lahaina and Kula. The organization is committed to growing and planting trees free of charge for affected families and businesses. The grant will support their ongoing efforts to care for surviving trees, as well as the cultivation, maintenance, transportation, and replanting of new trees for future generations. Treecovery Hawai‘i is collaborating with Hua Momona Farms as a growing site and partnering with the Hua Momona Foundation to provide food to those facing food insecurity on Maui and to educate the island’s youth on agricultural opportunities.

“We at Treecovery are honored to be in the wa‘a with Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines,” said Duane Sparkman, Founder and President of Treecovery Hawai‘i. “As we navigate the long journey ahead in the replanting of Lahaina and Kula, we know that we’ll have a tremendous partnership for years to come.”

In conjunction with the grant presentations, members from Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ leadership teams participated in a volunteer activity with Treecovery Hawai‘i, where they planted and potted 100 trees at Hua Momona Farms, demonstrating both airlines’ commitment to environmental stewardship and community support.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines provided critical relief efforts in the days, weeks and months following the Lahaina wildfires.

In the first 72 hours after the West Maui wildfires, Hawaiian prioritized the evacuation of displaced residents and visitors, transported first responders, operated hundreds of flights and carried more than 17,000 people out of Kahului Airport. During that first week, Hawaiian also flew more than 54,000 pounds of essential supplies into Kahului (OGG), including life-saving blood, medical supplies, communications equipment, animal kennels and more.

Likewise, Alaska Airlines transported over 220,000 pounds of relief supplies and contributed $150,000 to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s Kāko‘o Maui Fund. Additionally, together with Alaska employees and guests, the airline donated over 32 million miles to provide travel support for over 650 impacted Maui residents as they began the rebuilding process. Last year, Alaska launched its Maui Care Flights program, which provides over 3,000 roundtrip tickets for individuals and families on Maui to take a trip and decompress from the mental toll of recovery.

Presented by Alaska Airlines, HU Showtime Marching Band to Perform Throughout the Portland Community and at Halftime on February 22 vs. Charlotte

PORTLAND, Ore. (February 10, 2025) – The Portland Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines are once again teaming up to transform this year’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to the Pros Night into a celebration of the HBCU experience across the Portland community. Members of the Howard University Showtime Marching Band and Auxiliary Units will fly to Portland, courtesy of Alaska Airlines, for a weekend of community interaction, celebration, and education. The highlight of the weekend will be the annual HBCU to the Pros game on February 22 when the Trail Blazers take on the Charlotte Hornets.

In alignment with the NBA, the Trail Blazers prioritize highlighting the traditions and impact of HBCUs and the contributions of Black leaders who belong to historically Black fraternities and sororities and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs have served as cultural and intellectual hubs, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and leadership development. They have contributed significantly to Black culture, literature, arts, and sciences and we are excited to showcase those contributions to Rip City throughout the weekend. As the NBA team the farthest from an HBCU, bringing the HBCU experience to Portland invites the local community, specifically Black youth, to get a taste of the rich history, traditions, and culture that HBCU’s embody.

HBCUs play an important role in Alaska’s commitment to contributing in a meaningful way to the communities it serves. Driven by the belief that education has the power to transform the lives of young people, Alaska supports programs like United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. To date, the airline partnered with UNCF to launch a special aircraft livery to symbolize a joint commitment to creating opportunities in education, and established UNCF as a CARE Miles partner, which allows Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members to donate their miles to students flying out for college tours or flying home to be with their families on summer and holiday breaks. As part of the aircraft’s mission, Alaska has also supported several college tours and career and leadership development events. This spring, Alaska will support Portland area students from UNCF and the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center as they go on HBCU tours.

“Howard University and the “Showtime” Marching Band are thrilled to take the national stage at the Portland Trail Blazers’ HBCU to the Pros Night.,” said Denise Saunders Thompson, Assistant Dean for Administration, Howard University College of Fine Arts. “We are excited to bring our dynamic energy, powerful stereophonic sound, and unmatched showmanship to the Pacific Northwest. As cultural ambassadors of Howard University, this moment is more than just a performance—it’s an opportunity to share our legacy of excellence while embodying our institution’s core values of “truth and service.” We believe this opportunity will strengthen the connection between our historic university and the vibrant Portland community. Under the direction of Chancellor Mills, the Showtime Band promises an exhilarating performance that will leave a lasting impression. Get ready, Portland—we’re coming to show up and show out!”

“We’re thrilled to once again partner with Alaska Airlines to bring a taste of the HBCU experience to the Pacific Northwest with the Howard University Showtime Band,” said Michelle Jalali, Senior Director of DEI, Portland Trail Blazers. “Bringing the culture and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to Portland is a meaningful way to inspire and inform our Black and brown youth on the tremendous opportunities that these schools offer, helping to strengthen the pipeline of young people attending and graduating from HBCUs. We look forward to a weekend of celebration, education, and show-stopping entertainment.”

“Our commitment to Portland runs deep – from our investment in the local community to offering the most flights to the most destinations from PDX,” said Megan Ouellette, vice president, public and government affairs at Alaska Airlines. “I know I join our more than 2600 Portland employees in anticipation as we partner with the iconic Trail Blazers and Howard University to bring the excitement of an HBCU to Portland.”

On Friday, February 21 the Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines will host a community event at Portland Community College Cascade Gym (600 N Killingsworth St., Portland OR, 97217) beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be open to the public and feature performances from local dance and music groups, tabling from community groups, and the HU Showtime Marching Band’s first performance in Portland. On Saturday, February 22, both organizations will put on a private pregame mixer for local youth featuring a college and career exploration event made up of current professionals who are HBCU alumni and members of fraternities and sororities of the Divine 9. The weekend will close out on Sunday with another special community event featuring another show stopping performance from HU Showtime Marching Band.

Fans will have multiple opportunities to enjoy the incredible experience of the HU Showtime Marching Band throughout the game night. Prior to tip, catch the band participating in Blaze’s Pregame Parade presented by Polar Beverages throughout the 100 and 300 Level concourses. At halftime, stay in your seats for an epic halftime performance with the band taking over the Moda Center court with the sounds and choreography that make HBCU marching bands iconic. In addition to the band, the BlazerDancers will be joined by special guest dancers for a performance out on the court during a break in the game action.

In addition to the performances, the HBCU experience will be felt throughout Moda Center on February 22. Every attendee will receive a booklet upon entering the arena highlighting the night’s activations and entertainment. Back by popular demand, DJ Drae Slapz, an international DJ and artist, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will be mixing tunes and providing the vibes as fans venture through the concourse. Throughout the night, special videos will play throughout the arena featuring the Local Portland NPHC Chapter and HBCU Alumni. Also, check out Black History posters highlighting HBCU alumni and D9 members who have made significant cultural impact.

Stay tuned for more details on activations throughout the night and weekend.

The expansion of the Anchorage Lounge is part of our Great Land Investment Plan, which involves $60 million in projects throughout the state of Alaska over the next few years

After an extensive renovation, our Lounge at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport boasts double the seating and square footage for the ultimate space to reset and relax

Alaska Airlines is excited to announce the official reopening of its newly expanded Alaska Lounge at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport after nearly a year of development and construction.  The spacious oasis now offers more than double the seating – from 65 seats to 140 – and an additional 2,600 square feet for the ultimate space to reset, recharge and relax.

“The Anchorage Lounge is one of the busiest in our network, and we can’t wait to welcome back guests to this newly refreshed space as they travel through Anchorage. This remodel is part of our Great Land Investment Plan, which involves $60 million in projects throughout the state of Alaska over the next few years. Conveniently located in Concourse C near Gate C-1, the expanded Lounge now offers a variety of comfy chairs and furniture, including our popular Signature Loungers positioned for views of the tarmac and beyond. Guests will find that most seats are also near power outlets to allow them to sit back in comfort while recharging their electronic devices.

Our Lounge serves a daily selection of complimentary fresh, seasonal food items and premium beverages. Enjoy hand-crafted espresso drinks made with locally roasted beans from Kaladi Brothers, alongside a curated selection of West Coast wines, craft brews, and custom cocktails.

Each Lounge in our network is thoughtfully designed to reflect the unique character of its city. In Anchorage, we blended modern interiors with inspiration from Alaska’s breathtaking natural beauty. Each year, we’ll showcase the talents of local artists who creatively capture the essence of the state in their work.

“We’re proud to offer our guests a space that feels both modern and deeply connected to Alaska’s rich culture that celebrates the state’s landscape and heritage. This year, thanks to the Alaska Native Heritage Center, we’ll feature a carefully curated collection representing the five major cultural regions of Alaska. We hope our guests visiting the Anchorage Lounge feel a true sense of place as they recharge.”

– Marilyn Romano

Regional Vice President of Alaska, Alaska Airlines

The renovation in Anchorage is just one of many significant investments for our Lounge program across our network. Last month, we released the first concept designs for our largest lounge investment at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. We also announced our plans to open a Lounge at San Diego International Airport, followed by a new international Lounge in Seattle by 2027.

Taking Dreams to Higher Altitude: Meet Two Flight Attendants Moving to the Flight Deck

Yuka_mid

Landing a job in aviation is just the beginning. For many, a passion for flying can evolve in unexpected ways and lead to new career paths within the industry.

Take Heather Sanchez, a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant since 1999. When the pandemic caused widespread flight cancellations and travel restrictions, Sanchez saw an opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream.

“When COVID-19 hit, most of the airline industry came to a halt — except for flight schools, which continued to operate. In 2020, a friend interested in getting her pilot’s license invited me to join her for a discovery flight. I went and immediately fell in love. That’s when I decided it was now or never,” she said.

Heather

Sanchez has proudly served as a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant since 1999.

Growing up in West Oʻahu, Sanchez dreamed of becoming a pilot — her high school yearbook quote even foreshadowed her future career. But after graduation, she felt the path to the flight deck was unclear.

“I didn’t know anyone in the industry back then,” Sanchez explained. “I thought the only way to flight train would be to join the U.S. Air Force. Unfortunately, the internet was not what it is today and frankly, I lacked the resources and guidance to pursue a pilot career.”

Heather 2

Sanchez now sports pilot wings from PSA Airlines and flight attendant wings from Hawaiian Airlines.

Instead, Sanchez pursued a master's in education at Chaminade University of Honolulu, though the urge to fly never went away. As a local kid, flying on Hawaiian Airlines was an adventure that connected her to family, friends and new experiences on the Neighbor Islands and across the Pacific. After earning her degree, she began planning her next move. She recalled a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant who lived nearby and whose glamorous travel stories captivated young Sanchez and her friends. In 1999, she was hired as a flight attendant with her hometown airline.

Fast forward 26 years and a pandemic later, Sanchez is now the proud owner of pilot and flight attendant wings. When she's not caring for Hawaiian Airlines’ guests in the cabin, she’s building flight hours at PSA Airlines, a regional carrier under American Airlines Group.

“Balancing a full-time flight attendant job while building hours as a pilot hasn’t been easy,” Sanchez said. “Thankfully, I have an incredibly supportive family and the flexibility to curate my schedule so I can pursue my outside goals. My kids have seen me struggle to juggle it all, but I do it for them. I want to set an example of perseverance, dedication and never giving up on your dreams.”

Yuka Nissle, a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant for 15 years, followed a similar path toward earning her pilot’s wings. In 2010, as Hawaiian expanded its service in Japan, Nissle, a fluent Japanese speaker, was hired to welcome and care for guests who today arrive in Hawai‘i from our gateways in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. In addition to mostly working Hawaiian’s Asia routes, she can also be found behind the controls of Grand Caravans with regional carrier Mokulele Airlines.

Yuka 2

Nissle primarily flies Hawaiian's Japan flights, welcoming Japanese guests with authentic hospitality in their language.

“I pursued a flight attendant career because I love to travel, meet new people and be part of the aviation world,” Nissle shared. “I’ve always been fascinated by how pilots fly planes, and after working alongside them for many years, I felt inspired to pursue it myself.”

Nissle is building up her flight hours with Mokulele Airlines, a small regional carrier operating within the Hawaiian Islands.

For Nissle and Sanchez, becoming flight attendants opened the door to new opportunities. They are among several employees who have leveraged their years in the airline industry to advance their careers. Despite the demands of their budding pilot careers, they remain passionate about their flight attendant roles and look forward to one day serving Hawaiʻi’s aviation community in a new capacity.

“I love my job and the camaraderie this industry has given me. Many of my colleagues and mentors at Hawaiian Airlines have been incredibly uplifting, and I continue to be humbled by the support of my work ‘ohana and the culture of aloha we share,” Sanchez said.

Nissle echoed those sentiments: “There were times I doubted myself. I’d ask, ‘Could I really become a pilot?’ But I didn’t let that stop me. I kept pushing toward my dream. My daughter is also a pilot, though in the process of becoming an air traffic controller, and it’s been a joy to share this journey with her.”

As Hawaiian Airlines and its 7,000-plus employees embark on a new chapter with Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian is recruiting for nearly 300 Hawaiʻi jobs in the first quarter of this year, including 150 flight attendants, 50 airport positions, 30 pilots, 10 aircraft mechanics and other positions.

“Our industry is known for its ‘lifers’—families working side-by-side, passing down workplace traditions and creating long-lasting memories while helping our guests do the same,” said Heather Ryland, senior director of talent acquisition for Hawaiian Airlines. “Working in aviation is more than just a job—it’s an opportunity for personal growth, connection and exploration. We invite anyone interested to visit our careers page and consider joining us on this exciting journey ahead.”

Alaska Air Group reports fourth quarter and full year 2024 results

Q4-Earnings-Hero

Summary

Reported record full year revenue of $11.7 billion

Fourth quarter and full year adjusted earnings per share exceed high end of previously reported guidance

Repurchased approximately $250 million in outstanding shares in the fourth quarter

Announced record performance-based pay, totaling six weeks pay for most Alaska and Horizon employees

Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK) today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2024.

Air Group completed 2024 on a high note, with record revenues of $11.7 billion and a GAAP pretax margin of 4.6%. On an adjusted basis, the full year pretax margin of 7.1% is expected to be amongst the best in the industry despite the completed acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines and fleet grounding in the first quarter of the year.

This was a transformational year as we brought Hawaiian Airlines into Alaska Air Group and began our journey to unlock $1 billion in incremental pretax profit over the next three years. We’re proud that our incentive plan will reward Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employees with nearly six weeks of pay, which we believe will lead the industry. Looking forward, our vision is clear and we’re focused on executing our strategic plan – leveraging the strengths of our combined network, enhancing the end-to-end travel experience for our guests, and delivering value for everyone who depends on us.”

– Ben Minicucci

President & CEO of Alaska Air Group

Quarter in Review

Air Group’s consolidated results reported in the fourth quarter and full year 2024 include Hawaiian Airlines as of September 18, 2024 while prior comparable periods exclude any Hawaiian results. Discussion of fourth quarter results and forward-looking guidance refer to pro forma historical results as provided in prior 8-K filings and represented below.

Our GAAP pretax margin for the fourth quarter was 2.2% and GAAP earnings per share was $0.55. On an adjusted basis, our pretax margin was 3.9% and earnings per share was $0.97, which exceeded our latest guidance by approximately $0.50 at the midpoint driven by revenue and cost improvement across our business as well as lower non-operating expenses. Due to these same out-performance factors, full year adjusted EPS of $4.87 also surpassed the better end of our prior guidance range.

Fourth quarter revenue was stronger than expected across both Alaska and Hawaiian, building on the strength seen in the fall, and exiting the year with momentum driven by sustained leisure demand and an uptick in corporate travel which improved close in demand. With mild winter weather to end the year, we delivered reliable operational performance for our guests throughout the holiday travel period, with higher-than-expected completion rate and load factor. After inflecting positive in August, unit revenues improved nearly 6 points sequentially from 1% in the third quarter to 7% in the fourth quarter. This momentum has continued, with ongoing close-in strength in early Q1 bookings. Combined with a stable industry capacity backdrop, we are encouraged by these early indications for Q1 and a constructive start to 2025.

Unit cost performance in the fourth quarter also exceeded our guidance, up 8.6% as compared to pro forma 2023, as disciplined non-fuel cost performance offset higher performance-based pay accruals and better completion rates drove higher capacity. Throughout 2024, unit costs remained pressured from constrained capacity as a result of aircraft delivery delays, but are expected to improve through 2025 as we normalize resource levels and capacity compared to 2024.

Alaska Accelerate

Following a great close to 2024, we continue to build on our strong foundation and execute on Alaska Accelerate – our vision for the future. This strategy is focused on building scale, relevance and loyalty to connect our guests to the world with a remarkable travel experience rooted in safety, care and performance and deliver $1 billion in incremental profit over the next 3 years.

Our success this year and our optimistic look ahead is built upon a proven strategy that puts the guest at the center of everything we do and unlocks new opportunities across our business. We’re poised to capitalize on the strength of a combined global network, a powerful loyalty program, two beloved brands, and a remarkable travel experience that meets guests’ needs at every phase of the travel journey.”

Alaska Airlines rewards employees with extra 6 weeks of pay for remarkable performance in a pivotal year

PBP Header

Summary

Alaska is paying out $327 million in annual Performance Based Pay, the largest payout in the program’s 22-year history.

The payout equates to 6 weeks of additional pay for each employee.

2024 was a pivotal year for the 23,000 employees of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. Just a year ago after flight 1282 which resulted in one third of our mainline Alaska fleet being grounded and our operations severely disrupted, we were uncertain how the rest of the year would unfold. Yet, our teams rose to the challenge – with an unwavering commitment to safety – and restored Alaska Airlines to the safe, reliable operation we’re known and trusted for. We had a plan and faced some significant headwinds, but our team came together and finished the year in one of our strongest positions yet.

And we couldn’t be prouder to cap off the year by investing in our people with the largest payout in the history of our Performance-Based Pay (PBP) program. This year, it’s more than 11%, or roughly 6 weeks of additional pay.

“I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our employees for their dedication in helping us deliver another strong year. Their commitment to excellence, care and service sets us apart.”

– Ben Minicucci

CEO, Alaska Air Group

The PBP program is unique because it aligns all employees with the same goals – beyond a simple profit-sharing program. In addition to profit metrics, we work as one team toward goals around safety, fuel efficiency, and guest experience.

The PBP payout is in addition to the approximately $22.7 million in 2024 operational bonuses that employees earned for achieving quarterly on-time and safety goals. The combined quarterly and annual 2024 payouts paid to employees totals nearly $350 million.

Poised for another transformative year

Just six weeks ago, we unveiled Alaska Accelerate – our plan to drive scale, relevance and loyalty by connecting our guests to the world through remarkable travel experiences rooted in safety, care and performance.

2024 was a defining year for our company’s future. The most significant and foundational piece of that path forward was combining with Hawaiian Airlines in September. We’re thrilled to have the integration of the two airlines underway and roll out new benefits for guests throughout the year.

As exciting changes continue, you can count on our award-winning employees to care for you on your travels.

Gearing Up for Go Time at the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

Gearing Up for Go Time at the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

Officials reviewed the swell forecast. The conditions, they agreed, checked all the boxes. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, widely considered the world’s most prestigious surf event, was a go.

On Dec. 22, 2024, Hawaiian Airlines proudly sponsored the elite big wave surfing competition named after legendary waterman and lifeguard Eddie Aikau. The carrier, which has served as the Eddie’s official airline sponsor since 2019, helps ensure event organizers have what they need to host some of the sport’s finest competitors at the iconic Waimea Bay surf break on Oʻahu’s North Shore.

The 2024-2025 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational entered its three-month waiting period on Dec. 17, 2024, and perfect conditions developed just a week later. Long before, officials closely monitored storms in the Pacific Ocean, tracking strict swell strength, wind speed and direction, and tide levels necessary for the event to run.

Despite the short notice, Hawaiian Airlines was ready to activate and support.

“When we’re given the green light, it’s crunch time,” said Jennifer Gee, senior partnership and experiential marketing manager at Hawaiian Airlines. “A lot of prep work goes on behind the scenes.”

It was a collective effort, Gee explained. Hawaiian Airlines extended flight discounts and baggage waivers to help surfers get to Oʻahu in time for the event. The carrier’s airport teams, some of whom were among the first faces competitors saw on their journey, ensured a smooth trip by taking care of their luggage and prized surfboards (a perk now included under Hawaiian’s standard baggage allowance). Hawaiian’s in-flight teams kept traveling competitors at ease with a relaxing cabin experience, calming underlying nerves. Meanwhile, at the carrier’s Honolulu headquarters, employees loaded up their cars with banners, awards and more to get to Waimea Bay as early as possible and take their posts in time for the spectacle.

The 2024-2025 winner, Landon McNamara from the North Shore of Oʻahu, took home both top Hawaiian Airlines awards: 250,000 HawaiianMiles for the Best Wave of the Day and the winner’s prize of 350,000 miles.

When the swells aren’t pumping and Waimea Bay returns to its serene, summertime calm (the Eddie event has only run 11 times since its founding in 1984), Hawaiian continues its longstanding support with the Eddie Aikau Foundation’s annual essay contest. The contest offers Hawaiʻi’s public and private school students in grades 7-10 opportunities to reflect on Eddie’s legacy.

Debbie Nakanelua-Richards, Hawaiian Airlines’ director of community and cultural relations who helps review submissions, shared, “There’s much intention behind our support of the Eddie Aikau Foundation’s essay contest. The contest has been an incredible platform for keiki (youth) to share thoughts, in both English and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), on the values of Eddie Aikau, a waterman whose monumental legacy remains significant both in and out of the ocean.”

Attention Oregonians! Alaska Airlines announces three new nonstops around the state

OR-hero

Summary

For the first time, we’ll fly daily between Portland and Houston starting this spring.

We’re adding two daily Portland-Eugene roundtrips for convenient travel.

We’re linking two sunny destinations with new Medford-San Diego route.

Y’all, for the first time, Alaska Airlines is linking the Rose City to the largest city in Texas. We’re adding a new daily, nonstop flight between Portland and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston starting May 15, 2025. We’ll also resume twice-daily nonstop service between Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and offer a new route between San Diego and Medford, Oregon. All three routes will fly year-round. Tickets can be purchased now at alaskaair.com.

Portland is one of our key West Coast hubs, with more than 100 average daily departures currently serving 58 nonstop destinations from Portland, including four international routes.

“We’re based in Seattle, but Portland is a second home for us where we’ve been the largest carrier for more than 20 years. Our new flights out of Portland, Eugene and Medford show our continued focus on connecting Oregon with the rest of the country.”

– Kirsten Amrine

Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at Alaska Airlines

“As passenger traffic at PDX continues to grow, so does the opportunity for airlines. We appreciate the continued partnership with Alaska that gives travelers more options to connect to major markets and more flights within our state.”

– Dan Pippenger

Chief Aviation Officer at the Port of Portland

Route highlights

Portland-Houston:

Houston is currently our largest unserved city from Portland. Our new nonstop connects a pair of dynamic destinations that will be attractive to both business and leisure travelers. The flight will depart Portland at 10:30 a.m. and will depart Houston just before 6 p.m. This will be the third nonstop route from Portland to Texas joining Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin.

Portland-Eugene:

We worked hard to make sure the timing of the two roundtrips between Portland and Eugene hit the right mark for our guests, especially for itineraries that require a connection in Portland. Another benefit: There’s a 5:30 a.m. departure from Eugene that can be paired with a 9:55 p.m. return flight that allows for a full day in Portland without staying the night.

Medford-San Diego:

This route also offers convenient flight times with a late morning departure from San Diego and a mid-afternoon departure from Medford. In mid-May, we’ll offer the most daily departures and the greatest number of seats from Medford. This new service also supports our continued investment in San Diego and marks our 41st destination from there.

New nonstop routes

We have also increased our flying within Oregon this summer. Beginning May 15, our Portland-Medford route will be served four times a day instead of once, and Portland-Redmond will start flying year-round three times daily. Tickets for these flights can be purchased now at alaskaair.com.

Alaska’s elevated travel experience offers a blend of comfort and caring service for a seamless journey, including no change fees, the most legroom in First Class* and Premium Class, and the most generous Mileage Plan with the fastest path to elite status.

For inflight entertainment, our guests can enjoy hundreds of free movies and TV shows streamed to their devices. Our mainline flights are enabled with streaming-fast satellite Wi-Fi available for purchase, the option to pre-order from a range of fresh meal selections and power outlets at every seat to charge devices.

Our E175 regional aircraft also offer three classes of service with all seats along the aisle or window – no middle seats. We recently retrofitted our entire fleet of E175s to add 400,000 Premium Class seats annually.

*Out of any U.S. legacy airline excluding lie-flat seats
