Kendall’s gift: Fairbanks, Alaska girl spreads cheer to sick kids in Seattle

Sometimes big things do come in small packages. And sometimes, even bigger things come when inspired by the season of giving and a simple idea.

Take for instance the tenacity of 8-year old Kendall Wills, a Fairbanks, Alaska resident who has spent a fair amount of time in Seattle – not by choice but for medical necessities.

Kendall was diagnosed at age four with a kidney disease and has spent a good portion of her young life at Seattle Children’s Hospital. While she has never had to spend the holidays at the hospital, for a number of patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, it’s just not possible to be home for Christmas. This sobering fact resonated with Kendall.

We’re a big traveling family ­- we love to explore everywhere we can. You can usually find us at Disneyland, the beach, skiing in Utah or camping in the mountains. Our family is pretty good when it comes to flying. We’ve got our routine down to keep things as calm as possible, as my children’s energy is usually pretty high and excited when we fly. As we get all packed up, I make sure to have a variety of items all ready. Their backpacks are filled with things to play with on the airplane like a book or two, some coloring, and a few small toys that will fit in their pack.

We may be closer than ever to curing childhood cancer. Imagine a world where a child who has cancer will receive treatment and no longer have to endure radiation or chemotherapy as part of the process. This is the new focus of research at Seattle Children’s Hospital. They believe they are on the brink of a new cure based around immunotherapy – a revolutionary treatment that harnesses the power of a child’s immune cells to fight cancer. Clinical trials are now underway and are producing exceptional results in quickly eliminating childhood cancer. Having our hometown children’s hospital be a part of the cure is nothing less than exceptional.

Today is the nationwide launch of the Strong Against Cancer campaign during the Seahawks-49ers game. Along with our Chief Football Officer Russell Wilson, Alaska Airlines is proud to partner with The Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation with financial and marketing support. Changes to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan will make it easier to earn miles

 

Today Alaska Airlines announced new enhancements to its award-winning Mileage Plan program. These changes will increase the number of miles earned by its highest-tier elite members and those customers who buy higher-priced tickets. Other changes are necessary so that Mileage Plan can continue to award miles based on the distance flown while some carriers transition to revenue-based models that consider the price of the ticket.

Sometimes you book a ticket at the last minute or decide to fly first class for a special occasion. When you do this on Alaska Airlines, the hard-earned money you spend will be rewarded. And if you’re the planner, someone who books travel far in advance and would never consider flying first class, Alaska is keeping you whole – a mile flown is a mile earned. It’s that simple.
