Our history
For over nine decades, Alaska Airlines and the people behind it have been driven by integrity, care, ingenuity, professionalism and a spirit as rugged and resilient as our roots. That spirit was forged in the wild landscapes of Alaska — where aviation wasn’t a luxury, but a lifeline.
Our story began in 1932, when Linious “Mac” McGee launched McGee Airways by hand-painting the name onto a three-passenger plane and flying essential supplies out of Anchorage. What started as a bold solution to bridge vast, roadless terrain soon grew — through grit and a pioneering mindset — into what became Alaska Airlines in 1944. From those humble beginnings, we’ve charted a course toward innovation, service, and connecting people and places with care that’s always grounded in our roots.
