A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Hawaiian’s New Safety Video

Hawaiian Airlines’ iconic safety video, which, for nearly a decade, transported guests to destinations across the islands while employees relayed important safety information, has taken on a refreshed look.

In the new, seven-minute video that launched last week, 57 new and original cast members – including teenagers or adults who were keiki (children) in the 2015 spot – are shown in different locations doing their favorite things, from a father and son fishing in Hilo Bay to ʻohana (family) gathering for a backyard pāʻina (party).

The production team spent three months planning for seven days of filming. Their efforts resulted in a tropical, community-inspired storyboard that is engaging, educational and celebratory of Hawaiianʻs people and the places they call home. 

Here are some behind-the-scenes fun facts about Hawaiian’s newest safety video, now available on its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet (and coming soon to its Airbus A330).

A trip around the Hawaiian Islands

The video takes viewers to all four major Hawaiian islands – Oʻahu, Maui, Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi. Featured locations include:

In continuing the theme of ʻohana, keiki from the 2015 video were assigned the same lines. Here’s where you can find them:

  • Safety briefing card scene (3:52-4:12): Flight Attendant Mapuana and her daughter Hilina‘i, who are in the original shave ice scene, are featured in the new Hilo Farmer’s Market scene with Flight Attendant Maria and her daughters.

The first quarter loss per share includes ($0.32) per share due to the reduction in the Company's effective tax rate from 21% to 10%. As of 3/31/2024, the Company has generated federal and state net operating losses (NOLs) of approximately $451 million and $969 million , respectively, which will be used to reduce future cash tax obligations. Analysis under GAAP required us to increase the valuation allowance related to the NOLs which resulted in a lower effective tax rate for the period, decreasing our GAAP tax benefit.

First Quarter 2024 Highlights

Merger Update

  • The Company's stockholders voted in favor of the merger with Alaska Air Group, Inc. (" Alaska ")
  • The Company and Alaska entered into a timing agreement with the Department of Justice ("DOJ") in which they agreed not to consummate the merger before 90 days following the date on which both parties have certified substantial compliance with the DOJ's second request for additional information

Liquidity and Capital Resources

As of March 31, 2024, the Company had:

  • Unrestricted cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $897 million
  • Liquidity of $1.15 billion , including an undrawn revolving credit facility of $235 million
  • Outstanding debt and finance lease obligations of $1.75 billion

Routes and Network

  • Began Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner revenue service on April 15, 2024
  • Announced new flying from Salt Lake City (SLC) to Honolulu (HNL) and Sacramento (SMF) to Lihu`e (LIH) and Kona (KOA)
  • Announced increased summer flights between HNL and Austin (AUS), Boston (BOS), Las Vegas (LAS) and Pago Pago (PPG)
  • Hawaiian will also add a fourth daily flight between HNL and Los Angeles (LAX) from May 24 through September 2
  • Hawaiian received its second A330-300 freighter from Amazon which will operate between New York's JFK and San Bernardino (SBD)

Guest Experience

  • Signed a multi-year distribution agreement with Sabre that will provide Sabre-connected agencies with long-term access to the carrier's HA Connect™ NDC and traditional EDIFACT content through the Sabre travel marketplace.

Workforce Development

  • Partnered with Universal Technical Institute , the transportation, skilled trades and energy education division of UTI, Inc. to expand career opportunities for Universal Technical Institute airframe and powerplant graduates who earn their FAA certifications.

Economic Fuel Expense (unaudited)

The Company believes that economic fuel expense is a good measure of the effect of fuel prices on its business as it most closely approximates the net cash outflow associated with the purchase of fuel for its operations in a period. The Company evaluates its financial performance utilizing various GAAP and non-GAAP financial measures, including adjusted net loss, adjusted diluted EPS, adjusted pre-tax margin, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted operating cost per ASM (CASM excluding fuel and non-recurring items). Pursuant to Regulation G, the Company has included the following reconciliation of reported non-GAAP financial measures to comparable financial measures reported on a GAAP basis. The adjustments are described below:

  • CBA related expense . In February 2023 , pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) ratified a new four-year CBA, which included, amongst other things, a signing bonus, pay scale increases across all fleet types, improved health benefits and cost sharing, and enhancements to the Company's postretirement and disability plans. In connection with the ratification, the Company recorded a signing bonus and vacation liability true-up of $17.7 million which were recorded in wages and benefits during the quarter ended March 31, 2023 .
  • Contract termination amortization . In December 2022 , the Company entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with one of its third-party service providers to early terminate its Amended and Restated Complete Fleet Services Agreement (Amended CFS) covering A330-200 aircraft. The Amended CFS was originally scheduled to run through December 2027 , but was terminated in April 2023 . During the three months ended March 31, 2023 , the Company recognized approximately $18.1 million in amortization within Maintenance, materials and repairs in the Consolidated Statements of Operations.
  • Special items . During the three months ended March 31, 2024 , the Company recorded $8.5 million in Special items as a result of expenses related to its merger with Alaska , primarily consisting of legal, advisory, and other fees.
  • Gain on sale of commercial real estate . In February 2023 , the Company entered into an agreement for the sale of its commercial real estate and recognized a gain on sale of $10.2 million , which was recorded in Other operating expense in the Consolidated Statements of Operations.
  • Interest income on federal tax refund . In March 2023 , the Company received $4.7 million in interest income in connection with a $66.8 million federal tax refund received related to fiscal year 2018. The interest income received was recorded in Interest income in the Consolidated Statements of Operations.
  • Changes in fair value of fuel derivative contracts . Changes in fair value of fuel derivative contracts, net of tax, are based on market prices for open contracts as of the end of the reporting period and include the unrealized amounts of fuel derivatives (not designated as hedges) that will settle in future periods and the reversal of prior period unrealized amounts.
  • Unrealized gain on foreign debt . Unrealized gain on foreign debt is based on fluctuation in exchange rates and the measurement of foreign-denominated debt to the Company's functional currency.
  • Unrealized gain on equity securities . Unrealized gain on equity securities is driven by changes in market prices and currency fluctuations, which is recorded in Other nonoperating expense in the Consolidated Statements of Operations.

The Company believes that adjusting for the impact of the changes in fair value of equity securities and fuel derivative contracts, fluctuations in exchange rates on debt instruments denominated in foreign currency, and non-recurring expenses and income/gains (including CBA-related, contract termination amortization, special items, interest income on federal tax refund, gain or loss on sale of aircraft, and gain on sale of commercial real estate), helps investors better analyze the Company's operational performance and compare its results to other airlines in the periods presented.

Alaska Air Group reports first quarter 2024 results

Achieved record first quarter operating revenue of $2.2 billion

Ratified new agreement with AMFA-represented employees

SEATTLE — Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK) today reported financial results for the first quarter ending March 31, 2024, and provided outlook for the second quarter ending June 30, 2024. 

I want to recognize Alaska’s employees for their uncompromising prioritization of safety, for taking great care of our guests, and for delivering strong performance in the first quarter,” said CEO Ben Minicucci. “Despite significant challenges to start the year our results have far exceeded initial expectations. Thanks to thoughtful capacity planning, network optimization, and diligent cost control, we are well positioned to carry our strong performance into the second quarter and beyond.”

Impact of Flight 1282:

Air Group’s first quarter operation and results were significantly impacted by Flight 1282 in January and the Boeing 737-9 MAX grounding which extended into February. The Company has received $162 million in initial cash compensation from Boeing to address the financial damages incurred during the first quarter.

Financial Results:

  • Reported net loss for the first quarter of 2024 under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) of $132 million, or $1.05 per share, compared to a net loss of $142 million, or $1.11 per share, for the first quarter of 2023.
  • Reported net loss for the first quarter of 2024, excluding special items and mark-to-market fuel hedge accounting adjustments, of $116 million, or $0.92 per share, compared to a net loss of $79 million, or $0.62 per share, for the first quarter of 2023.
  • Repurchased 561,086 shares of common stock for approximately $21 million in the first quarter.
  • Generated $292 million in operating cash flow for the first quarter.
  • Held $2.3 billion in unrestricted cash and marketable securities as of March 31, 2024.
  • Ended the quarter with a debt-to-capitalization ratio of 47%, within the target range of 40% to 50%.

Operational Updates:

  • Agreement to purchase Hawaiian Airlines for $18 per share was approved by Hawaiian shareholders. The proposed combination remains subject to regulatory approval.
  • Ratified a five-year collective bargaining agreement with approximately 1,000 Alaska Airlines employees represented by AMFA.
  • Completed inspections of all 737-9 MAX aircraft and returned the fleet to service in February.
  • Enhanced quality oversight program at the Boeing production facility to validate the work and quality of our aircraft as they progress through the manufacturing process.
  • Received two E175 aircraft during the quarter, bringing the total in the Horizon fleet to 43.

Commercial Updates:

  • Launched partnership with Bilt Rewards, which adds Alaska’s Mileage Plan as a transfer partner and later in 2024 will allow Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® cardholders to earn 3x miles when paying rent via Bilt.
  • Announced growth plans out of Portland to provide guests with more travel options, including 25% increased capacity and a new daily nonstop flight to Atlanta, beginning later this year.

Hawaiian Airlines’ New Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Welcomes First Guests

HONOLULU – Hawaiian Airlines marked a milestone in its 94-year history: seeing off the inaugural flight of its new flagship aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Aircraft N781NA, named Kapuahi (a star known as Aldebaran in Western astronomy), departed Honoluluʻs Daniel K. Inouye International Airport this afternoon for San Francisco. The carrier’s first 787-9 guests were welcomed with fresh lei and treated to live music and hula by the Hawaiian Airlines Serenaders.

Kapuahi, which was revealed in February during a formal blessing ceremony in Honolulu, will operate the carrier’s nonstop, daily Honolulu-San Francisco flights until May 14, when it will join Hawaiian’s second 787-9, N780NA, to begin dedicated service between Honolulu-Los Angeles (HA2/3) starting May 14, and Honolulu-Phoenix on May 15.

The moment they step onboard Hawaiian’s 787-9, guests are immersed in an island-inspired design in a cabin that evokes Hawaiʻi’s beauty through form, texture, and soothing sunrise and sunset lighting. The 34 Leihōkū (garland of stars) Suites feature lie-flat seating, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal power outlets, wireless cell phone charging and direct aisle access. Set in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors, the suites offer privacy or a shared experience with combinable double suites allowing couples to fall asleep while gazing at a starlit ceiling inspired by the constellations that guided early Polynesian voyagers.

Hawaiian’s 787-9 Main Cabin consists of 266 Collins Aerospace Aspire seats with ergonomically contoured back and armrests that maximize living space, offer more shoulder and hip room and feature a 12-inch seatback monitor with USB-A and USB-C charging ports. Main Cabin guests can also select from 79 Extra Comfort seats to enjoy more legroom and access to AC power outlets.

Alaska Airlines empowers students in the Pacific Northwest: Flying dozens to college tours 

In partnership with local organizations, Alaska Airlines flew more than 60 BIPOC high school juniors from Seattle and Portland to tour historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) 

Last month, we flew 60 BIPOC students from the Pacific Northwest to tour colleges in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta area is home to many HBCUs, including Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, Morris Brown, and Fort Valley State. Some students continued to tour additional schools along the East Coast, including Tuskegee University, Alabama State, Howard, and more. Given the absence of HBCUs in the Northwest, these trips inspire students to experience the cultural richness and opportunities offered by HBCUs. 

While at the schools, students spoke with admissions counselors, current students and administrators about the importance of going to college, the admissions process and financial aid.

Experiencing the eclipse at 35,000 feet: How two Alaska Airlines dispatchers made it happen

Guests aboard Alaska Airlines Flight #322 from San Diego to Dulles were treated to front-row seats for Monday’s total eclipse. Guests donned eclipse glasses and peered through their windows to witness this rare celestial event, which won’t happen again in the United States until 2044.

But the timing was no coincidence. 

“This was the first I had piloted during a solar eclipse, and I actually retire in 2040, so being in the front row was right at the top of the list for some of the best experiences I’ve had in the sky,” said Scott Bunch, Alaska Airlines first officer for Flight #322. “It was great teamwork from everybody involved. We had excellent dispatching that provided a route to keep the aircraft on the path of totality. Not only did we go through the darkness from the moon passing in front of the sun, but we also stayed in it. I was ecstatic.” 

Solar eclipse chasers had long booked their flights along the path of full totality to watch from the ground. Many of Alaska’s flights to Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Mazatlán, Mexico had sold out in advance. To respond to the increase in demand, we added flights to Texas and Mexico—destinations that were projected to have the longest duration of totality.

How we made it happen. 

Unlike in 2017, when Alaska chased the Great American Eclipse with the help of a team of pilots and an astronomer, there was no elaborate flight planned out to give guests a view from the sky. 

When excitement began building ahead of the April 8 event from guests and media, Joe Demory, director of dispatch at Alaska Airlines, started looking into which flights we already had on the schedule that would likely give guests the best seats in the house. 

“We started with basic research by comparing our flight schedule with the eclipse path,” said Demory. “I was able to identify two flights out of San Diego—one to Boston and the other to Dulles—that would give us the best chance of following the eclipse path for the longest period of time.” 

But Demory knew weather, air traffic control (ATC) and other factors out of our control could delay the flights and miss the eclipse altogether. 

Knowing guests would be disappointed if they didn’t get to watch the moon obscuring the view of the sun, Demory asked veteran Alaska chief dispatchers Ed Fischer and Eric Juchartz to help plan the best flight path for the pilots that day. 

Planning the path to totality. 

“We had a small window of time to make this all work, especially for full totality that everyone wanted to see—you want to watch the full eclipse, not the partial,” said Juchartz. “I started with Google Earth, which had an eclipse overlay, so that was kind of cool.”  

It took him about an hour to use different technology and software to map out the best route for both flights. It would mean flying farther south than typical flights to Dulles and Boston. 

On the day of the eclipse, Fischer (who used to navigate aircraft for the U.S. Airforce) reviewed Juchartz’s flight paths and made small adjustments back at Dispatch. In his role as dispatcher, Fischer communicated with our pilots the entire flight to make sure they got to their destination safely and didn’t miss the total solar eclipse.  

“We were probably going to intercept it somewhere around Indianapolis is what I guessed, and it was going to be dependent on how strong the winds were and when we actually took off,” said Fischer. “I emailed the crew a list of the eclipse times along their route so they could see about what time they were going to be at different points and then pass it on to our passengers.” 

 Dispatch makes it happen for every flight. 

Alaska Airlines dispatchers played an indispensable role in orchestrating this special flight for our guests while also overseeing the coordination of all our daily flight operations, ensuring unwavering commitment to safety, efficiency, and adherence to regulations for every flight.

“It was right over Missouri, just shy of the border of Illinois, that we actually got the full eclipse, it was awesome,” said Nick Mentzen, captain at Alaska Airlines, who piloted flight 322. “ATC gave us permission to fly at a lower altitude and do a series of ‘s-turns’ to give our guests on both sides of the plane to get a view, first to the right then followed by a turn to the left and that’s when we actually got the full eclipse.” 

It just goes to show the level of expertise and professionalism within our team; whether people realize it or not, every flight is receiving that oversight from our dispatch work group to make sure our guests get from their origin to destination safely and efficiently,” Demory said. “Monday was our opportunity to shine and highlight some of the things that we do behind the scenes on a daily basis.” 

Wearing eclipse glasses gifted by Alaska, guests watched the entire event unfold from their seats above the earth. The level of excitement was electric.

The Aloha Behind Hawaiian’s ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Flights

An aircraft cabin isn’t your typical setting for learning a new language – that is unless you’re traveling on Hawaiian Airlines.

More of the carrier’s guests have experienced ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) at up to 41,000 feet, thanks to employees who are perpetuating the language and normalizing its use by incorporating it into the flight experience. Translations are available throughout our cabin, from seat numbers and wall signage to safety videos and announcements. Out of all of Hawaiian’s efforts to honor Hawaiʻi’s native tongue, the most impactful has been bilingual exchanges between its employees and guests.

Cue the ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flight, a travel experience driven by teams passionate about the indigenous language. They hail from departments across the company, including marketing, in-flight and airport operations.

“I’m always thinking about the Hawaiian language,” said Manakō Tanaka, senior specialist in community and cultural relations, who is among the flights’ organizers. “We are always trying to find the next meaningful opportunity to celebrate ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and plant those seeds with our guests and among our non-speaking colleagues.”

After a Kahului-Portland ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flight, Tanaka took time to teach the carrier’s Portland-based employees about the language and ways they can use it at work.

 

Since 2019, nine ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flights have been organized across the carrier’s network, from Neighbor Island routes to longer haul flights like Tokyo, Portland and Boston – engaging thousands of guests from around the world.

Here is what goes into making an ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flight meaningful and possible:


Finding the right moment

According to Tanaka, the flights are often planned to mark a special occasion, such as a route anniversary or Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month). For example, in 2018, a group of in-flight and airport operations employees – many Hawaiian language immersion school graduates – came together to host one of Hawaiian’s first ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flights, HA18 (Honolulu-Las Vegas). The flight was organized to honor and celebrate a special guest that day: Dr. Larry Kimura, who taught many of the HA18 crewmembers and is considered the grandfather of the Hawaiian language revitalization movement.

Earlier this year, Hawaiian hosted the first language flight for its Boston service to commemorate Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, welcoming guests at the gate and onboard the aircraft with bilingual announcements. The crew offered guests translation cards with useful phrases such as “I _____ na‘u ke ‘olu‘olu” (May I please have _____) and educational coloring sheets for keiki (children). During their layover, employees visited the Peabody Essex Museum to pay homage to the Hawaiian god Kū, who is depicted in a six-foot-plus-tall wooden relic displayed at a gallery.

In February, HA90 crewmembers joined their fellow Hawaiian Airlines employees on a special trip to Peabody Essex Museum during their layover.

  • 2023: Kahului-Las Vegas for Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi
  • 2023: Honolulu-Rarotonga for inauguration of service
  • 2024: Honolulu-Long Beach to welcome traveling students and their families and teachers from Hawaiian language immersion preschool Pūnana Leo
  • 2024: Honolulu-Boston for Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi

Finding the right people

To lift the language across the company, in 2019 Hawaiian partnered with the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu to establish a language certification program for ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. Today, 23 qualified speakers have tested and qualified for the certification and now bear the Hae Hawaiʻi (Hawaiʻi state flag) on their name tags, joining other colleagues who are certified in Japanese, Chinese, French, Korean and Samoan.

These speakers often help organize and host ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flights; however, they don’t represent the entire population of speakers at the company.

“There are plenty of fluent speakers who haven’t gone for the test or just have not completed the process yet,” Tanaka said. “Hawaiian has many employees, including managers and leaders, who can speak very well and are involved in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flights too.”

Finding the right format

Each ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flight is unique. For example, language resources, like the translation cards and keiki activities, are often tailored to fit the type of flight (i.e. a long-haul international flight vs a short Neighbor Island trip), beckoning colleagues from across the company to help create the right setting.

“There’s a shared appreciation and connection to the language within our company that we have been able to tap into,” Tanaka shared. “When we get ready for these flights, many people are working together behind the scenes to do something.”

During the flight, guests are welcomed with a mix of required safety/service announcements and impromptu callouts as crewmembers are encouraged to add their personal touch to the experience.

“These flights can be a little nerve-wracking,” admitted Kekoa “Halemano” Kalahiki, an ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi-speaking flight attendant who worked the recent ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flight between Honolulu and Long Beach. “I’m always terrified I’ll fumble over my words, so I spent the night before my trip reviewing vocabulary and practicing my announcements. In the end, everything went well and my experience was amazing.”

Regardless of the route or celebration, Hawaiian’s ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi flights are organized to immerse Hawaiʻi residents and visitors in the language.

“Normalizing a language means making it approachable, accessible and applicable. So, when we contemplate opportunities to engage with our employees and guests in this unique way, we need to make sure everyone feels comfortable. We keep the introduction simple and relevant, focus on making sure what our guests learn can be applied throughout their trip, and empower our employees – many of whom are native Hawaiian – to play a significant role in the effort,” Tanaka explained.

To Kalahiki, fostering language exchanges helps people from different places connect and better understand each other.

“Language is key to understanding a people and their worldview. Our aircraft cabins carry so many different people every day, so the opportunities for our guests to experience a cultural exchange are numerous,” he said.

“When I speak ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi, my goal is to reach our kaiāulu ʻōlelo (language community) – especially our keiki ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (young speakers); it’s important they experience our language as something viable. So, through work like this, I hope to maintain and expand space for our language wherever Hawaiian Airlines travels,” Kalahiki added.

Hawaiian doesn’t have a set schedule for its ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi flights and will continue to surprise and delight guests as more authentic opportunities to foster lasting connections with Hawaiʻi and its culture arise.
