Author and veteran journalist Paul McElroy has joined Alaska Airlines as director of internal communications. McElroy will oversee the airline’s employee newspaper, manage internal communications programs and assist with media relations in the airline’s Public and Government Affairs Division.

"We are fortunate to have a journalist of Paul’s stature leading our internal communications efforts," said Caroline Boren, Alaska’s managing director of strategic and corporate communications. "His broad newspaper experience, as well as technology and training expertise, will be a valuable asset to our communications team as we expand our employee communications efforts."

Prior to joining Alaska Airlines, McElroy spent 16 years as a copy, photo and news editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Chicago Sun-Times. He also served as systems editor and newsroom project manager at the Post-Intelligencer, where he conducted staff training while helping the newspaper transition to digital imaging and a new electronic publishing system.

McElroy has written two technology-related novels and two corporate histories, including "Against the Wind: The History of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association." His first book, "Tracon," is a technically authentic novel about controllers and the airborne collision avoidance system known as TCAS.

A native of Chicago, McElroy has lived in the Seattle area since 1984. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University of Chicago and has served as a visiting journalism instructor at the University of Washington.
