Alaska Airlines has named Bob Bernicchi managing director of maintenance engineering. Bernicchi will manage the airline’s aircraft, powerplant, standards and support engineering functions.

With more than 23 years of aerospace-engineering experience, Bernicchi has held positions in both commercial and military aviation. He has served as Alaska’s director of MD-80 and 737-200 fleet engineering since joining the airline in 2005.

"Bob’s expertise in aircraft engineering and maintenance production, coupled with his focus on people and reliability, make him a key leader in our maintenance and engineering organization," said Fred Mohr, Alaska’s vice president of maintenance and engineering.

Prior to joining Alaska, Bernicchi spent 21 years at United Airlines in a series of progressively responsible leadership positions, including systems engineer, senior manager of 757/767 fleet engineering, and director and chief engineer of narrow-body aircraft. Bernicchi also held a number of production- line positions at United, including manager of component maintenance and general manager of international line maintenance. Before starting his commercial aviation career, he served as an aerospace engineer at the U.S. Naval Air Rework Facility in Alameda, Calif.

Bernicchi holds a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He lives in Bellevue, Wash., with his wife and two sons.
