Alaska Air Group, Inc. today reported May passenger traffic for its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines (Alaska) and Horizon Air (Horizon).

Alaska’s May traffic increased 2.2 percent to 1.617 billion revenue passenger miles (RPMs) from 1.582 billion flown a year earlier. Capacity during May was 2.078 billion available seat miles (ASMs), 1.3 percent higher than the 2.051 billion in May 2007.

The passenger load factor (the percentage of available seats occupied by fare-paying passengers) for the month was 77.8 percent, compared to 77.1 percent in May 2007. The airline carried 1,472,000 passengers, compared to 1,533,200 in May 2007.

RPMs for the five-month period totaled 7.710 billion, a 7.6 percent increase from the 7.163 billion recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the five months ended May 2008 increased 5.0 percent to 10.198 billion ASMs, compared to 9.714 billion in 2007.

The passenger load factor for the first five months of 2008 was 75.6 percent, compared to 73.7 percent in 2007. The airline carried 6,967,000 passengers, compared to 6,843,500 in 2007.

HORIZON AIR

Horizon’s May traffic decreased 3.7 percent to 234.3 million RPMs from 243.2 million flown a year earlier. Capacity for May was 318.2 million ASMs, 3.0 percent lower than the 327.9 million in May 2007.

The passenger load factor for the month was 73.6 percent, compared to 74.2 percent in May 2007. The airline carried 646,500 passengers, unchanged from May 2007.

RPMs for the five-month period totaled 1.105 billion, a 0.6 percent increase from the 1.098 billion recorded a year earlier. Capacity for the five months ended May 2008 decreased 0.3 percent to 1.567 billion ASMs, compared to 1.572 billion in 2007.

The passenger load factor for the first five months of 2008 was 70.5 percent, compared to 69.9 percent in 2007. The airline carried 3,087,400 passengers, compared to 2,843,100 in 2007.
