CEOs of Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines fly 1929 plane that has historical ties to both companies

Two aviation geeks met up last week to fly an old plane.

That usually wouldn’t be noteworthy, except the pilots just happened to be Alaska Airlines CEO Brad Tilden and Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley.

And this exact aircraft – a 1929 Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker, tail number NC251M – has historical ties to both airlines.

Nearly 90 years ago, this was the first aircraft in Hawaiian’s fleet. A few years after that, the plane was brought to the state of Alaska and served in the fleet that would become Alaska Airlines.

It’s a special connection between two pioneering airlines named for states that are uniquely reliant on air travel. And it made for a fun flight for a couple of guys who are crazy about airplanes.

“This was the first airplane that Hawaiian carried customers in, and one of the first airplanes that Alaska carried customers in,” Tilden said. “I could not have been more honored to fly the airplane alongside Mark.”

Hawaiian Airlines Holding Nov. 18 Open House for Former Island Air Employees

HONOLULU – Hawaiian Airlines will be holding an open house for former Island Air employees on Nov. 18 to assist workers displaced by the company’s shutdown. The open house organized for Island Air employees only will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hawaiian’s Honolulu headquarters at 3375 Koapaka Street.

Hawaiian Airlines managers will provide former Island Air employees information about career opportunities and guide them through the application process. Hawaiian will be posting additional job openings on its recruitment website in coming days. Job seekers attending the fair will also be able to meet with representatives with Ohana by Hawaiian, which is operated by Empire Airlines and offers passenger and cargo service to Oahu, Lanai, Molokai, and Kapalua in West Maui.

Free parking will be available on the sixth floor of the Airport Industrial Building. Check in begins at 9 a.m., followed by three, 30-minute informational sessions starting at 9:30 a.m.

Hawaiian Airlines plans to announce similar open houses for former Island Air employees on the neighbour islands.

UPDATE: Hawaiian Airlines has confirmed additional job fairs for customer service and ramp agent positions in Līhu‘e, Kahului, and Kona. Interested candidates should bring two copies of their resumes. Details are as follows:

Hawaiian Airlines yesterday began offering travel assistance for Island Air passengers holding a confirmed ticket for flights scheduled Nov. 11-17 to/from/via Honolulu, Oʻahu (HNL); Kahului, Maui (OGG); Kona, Hawai‘i Island (KOA); and Līhu‘e, Kaua‘i (LIH). Those passengers can standby for Coach Class seating on Hawaiian’s regularly scheduled flights between the same origin and destination cities on the ticketed day of departure.

For Island Air guests who require a confirmed travel itinerary, Hawaiian is offering a special $71 one-way fare, inclusive of taxes and fees. This fare is available to Island Air customers holding tickets for flights between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17, and applies to roundtrip tickets that include a return segment outside the seven-day window. Customers can book this discounted fare by visiting Hawaiian’s help desk at the airport or by calling the reservations department at 1-800-367-5320 and providing their Island Air ticket number.

Hawaiian Airlines to Honor Island Air Tickets

HONOLULU – Hawaiian Airlines is working quickly to provide flight relief for travelers who have been displaced by the shutdown of Island Air operations. Starting Nov. 11 through 17, Island Air guests holding a confirmed reservation to/from/via Honolulu, Oʻahu (HNL); Kahului, Maui (OGG); Kona, Hawai‘i Island (KOA); and Līhu‘e, Kaua‘i (LIH) can standby for Coach Class seating on Hawaiian’s regularly scheduled flights between the same origin and destination cities on the ticketed day of departure.

To qualify for standby travel, Island Air travelers must go to Hawaiian’s special customer service desk at the airport on the date of travel shown on their ticket to speak with a customer service agent and provide their Island Air paper or electronic ticket confirmation. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for flights on Hawaiian.
Hawaiian has increased its customer service staffing at airports state-wide, and volunteer employees from the airline’s Team Kōkua Concierge program will be stationed at affected airports statewide to assist travelers and customer service agents in anticipation of a spike in traveler needs.

For Island Air guests who require a confirmed travel itinerary, Hawaiian will be offering a special $71 one-way fare, inclusive of taxes and fees. With $100,000 donation, Alaska Airlines supports 10 Hawaii nonprofits

To celebrate 10 years of flying to the Islands, Alaska Airlines has given $100,000 to 10 nonprofits in Hawaii – $10,000 each.

“Hawaii has a special relationship with Alaska Airlines. During the Great Recession, the airline provided a U.S. West Coast connection and a much-needed boost to our economy,” said Hawaii Gov. David Ige. “Ten years later, it’s the number one carrier from that market, and its passengers contribute over $2 billion to the state’s economy each year. But the bond goes beyond the economic impact. Alaska Airlines is part of our ohana and our shared values. We look forward to a long and productive future together.”

A winning team: Alaska and Virgin America take home top awards in 2017

Condé Nast Traveler named Virgin America “Best U.S. Airline” in their 2017 Reader’s Choice Awards for the 10th year in a row this morning. Alaska Airlines took the third spot. Virgin America has taken the top spot in the poll every year since the airline began flying.

“This is a celebration of the Best in the World and you are part of it,” the Condé Nast Traveler Team said in the official announcement.

The end of an era: Alaska retires unique cargo-passenger ‘combi’ planes

After a weeklong fishing trip in Yakutat, Alaska, retired Captain David Olson found himself on one of the last flights of the 737-400 combis – a plane he piloted for two years straight when he first started flying for Alaska Airlines nearly 36 years ago.

The unique cargo-passenger aircraft will officially retire Oct. 18.

“It’s truly nostalgic,” he said aboard Flight 66. “They’ve been around a long time and brought me some great memories, especially fishing holes.”

Alaska supports wildfire relief efforts in Northern California

Alaska Airlines has partnered with the Salvation Army, donating $50,000 to assist Northern California wildfire victims.

Since Sunday, wildfires burning in Northern California have devastated the area, destroying thousands of homes and businesses. The Salvation Army has set up on-the-ground emergency disaster recovery centers throughout affected areas to provide shelter and meal services.

“Our hearts are with our community, and Alaska Air Group employees and their families in the North Bay, during this devastating time,” said Annabel Chang, Alaska Airlines’ Bay Area vice president. “We hope our partnership with the Salvation Army will bring much-needed relief to those affected by the wildfires.”

Alaska Airlines has provided service to Charles M. Schultz-Sonoma County Airport for 10 years. Flights to Sonoma County were suspended earlier this week. Although some flight service has resumed, guests should visit alaskaair.com to check the status of their flight.
