Alaska Airlines’ electronic bag tag named to PopSci’s Best of What’s New list

Popular Science announced their Best of What’s New list of 2022, and our new electronic bag tags made the cut. Each year, they review thousands of new projects and innovations and choose the top 100 winners across 10 categories. Alaska was recognized in the Aerospace category. To win, a product or technology must represent a significant step forward in its category.

Electronic bag tags – changing the airport experience

The first U.S. airline to launch a program like this, the electronic bag tags will allow guests to skip the step of printing traditional bag tags at the airport. Travelers will be able to activate the devices from anywhere – their home, office or even car – up to 24-hours before their flight through our mobile app.

The activation is done simply by touching the phone used for check-in to the electronic bag tag, which has an antenna that powers and reads the information transmitted from the phone. The e-paper bag tag’s screen will then display the guest’s flight information.

Rollout of the program begins with a group of our Mileage Plan members. Other guests will be able to purchase the bag tags in early 2023.
